        The Savoy

        The Rise of a Family

        by Maxim Wahl

        I. 1932: the Savoy Hotel is London’s premier address. For thirty years, it has been run by the Wilders. When the family patriarch has a stroke, his son Henry believes his moment has come, but his father has different plans: he entrusts Violet, his illegitimate granddaughter, with the management of the hotel. Violet is torn. On the one hand, her dream of making a career as one of the first women in radio seems to be coming true; on the other, she’s waited her whole life for the chance to be accepted by her family …   II. 1936: Violet is running the Savoy. In addition to her never-ending duties, she is weighed down by a crushing sense of guilt. She blames herself for driving her beloved John to suicide. Desperately lonely, she longs for a bit of happiness. A French nobleman seems to give her this, and she accepts his invitation to the Olympic Games. For Violet, Berlin proves to be a brutal experience, which in reality serves to distract her from the mysterious goings-on at the Savoy Hotel.   III. 1940: Against Violet’s will, the Savoy has become a hotbed of political intrigue. Still, she does her best to offer her international guests the luxury to which they are accustomed. This balancing act is put to the test when the British king arrives as a guest: Violet is expecting a child with Max Hammersmith, and his wife, Susan, is the lady-in-waiting accompanying the visitors from Buckingham Palace. Soon, however, these problems fade in the face of political reality: the Second World War is raging, and even the Savoy Hotel may fall victim to German air raids.

        The Medical Miscellany

        by Manoj Ramachandran

With the average medical textbook now over one thousand pages long and newspapers daily devoting many columns to health issues, no individual can know more than the bare essentials of the subject. What better then than to dip into a small book covering only the amazing, the bizarre, and the amusing? This fascinating collection of medically-related items will inform, tantalize, and infuriate you by turns. How can you tell if a murder victim was left- or right-handed? How many euphemisms can you think of for unmentionable parts of the body? What has chickenpox got to do with chickens? Who has played Doc Holliday in the movies? Does a famous doctor share your birthday? We challenge you not to find something unexpected on every page nor to smile, or groan, at almost every entry. How much do you know already? How much will you be able to remember? After much dipping in and out, or from referring to the topic-based index, you will know what '100 per cent proof' really means for an alcoholic drink and what the effect of drinking Ayahuasca is. You will also know when two doctors in casualty earnestly discuss your 'UBI', they have smelt your breath and are talking about your 'unexplained beer injury'. Some facts just are more memorable than others...

        Traditional Herbal Medicines

A Guide to Their Safer Use

by Lakshman Karalliedde, Rita Fitzpatrick, Debbie Shaw

The part played by traditional medicines in our health care continues to increase year on year. Used for many centuries, they have the reputation of being gentler, less invasive, and more 'natural' than modern western prescription medicines. However, for individuals seeking care that includes traditional medicines there are in fact many risks. While the toxic profiles of western medicines have been precisely and extensively documented and publicised, the harmful effects of traditional medicines taken on their own, or often in combination with western medicines, are not well enough known to ensure safe use.In this highly structured compendium, Dr Lakshman Karalliedde brings together what is currently known and has been scientifically validated regarding traditional medicines from around the world. Covering Chinese, Afro-Caribbean, Unani and Ayurvedic traditional medicines, this book describes the sources of these medicines, their known effects and side-effects, recommended dosages, and, very importantly, precautions.Every practitioner prescribing traditional medicines to their patients should have a copy of this book. Individuals who seek the help of complementary therapists and take these medicines will also want to have a copy for reference.

        Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

A Natural Way to Treat ADHD

        by Basant K. Puri

Does your child have poor concentration and an inability to relax? Does your child do crazily reckless things that can't be explained afterwards? Has your child been diagnosed with ADHD? * Are you caring for or teaching children with ADHD? Or do you have these problems yourself? Increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed as having Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. As the best available treatment for many years, they are prescribed powerful drugs that help to control (but not cure) the worst of the symptoms. However, the potential side-effects of these drugs are worrying and the long-term consequences unknown, facing doctors, parents and adult sufferers with a terrible dilemma. In Professor Puri's groundbreaking new book, you will discover a very different way of looking at ADHD. His starting point is the basis of behaviour in the chemistry of the brain and the many factors that influence this. By understanding behaviour at this level, it is possible to see how hyperactivity can be reduced and concentration improved in a natural way that is in tune with the needs of the individual.;He presents the results of two major studies, with which he has been involved, that demonstrate the effectiveness of a completely natural way to treat ADHD. Read how and why EPA ('eicosapentaenoic acid') will be essential to recovery; how to take it; what dietary changes will enhance its effects; and what lifestyle changes will help you and your child to overcome the complex of symptoms that make up ADHD.

        Shadows in Wonderland

        A Hospital Odyssey

        by Colin Ludlow

When television producer Colin Ludlow was admitted to hospital for an operation, he expected to be home in ten days. In the event, he ended up staying for five months, nearly died on several occasions, contracted MRSA, and was still recovering from his experiences more than three years later. In "Shadows in Wonderland" he tells his story, and takes a fascinating philosophical journey through chronic illness as he explores its wider significance. The book is a moving account of how the author pieced together the shattered fragments of his life and sought to make sense of them again. It is the record of a quest - which we all face - for health and wholeness in a fractured, disjointed world.

        Suburban Shaman

        Tales from Medicine's Frontline

        by Cecil Helman

'To be a good doctor you have to be a compassionate chameleon, a shape shifter - a shaman. Even if your adaptation to your patients' world happens at an unconscious level you should always work within their system of ideas, never against it...' So writes Cecil Helman after 27 years as a family practitioner in the suburbs of North London interlaced with training and research as a medical anthropologist, comparing a wide variety of health systems. This unique combination of frontline health worker and detached academic informs the many stories that make up this fascinating book. It also informs the author's shared insights into what these stories can teach us about ourselves and our own attitudes to health and illness, whether we are deliverers or recipients of health care. With humour and gentle humaneness, Helman's colourful stories take the reader on a journey from apartheid South Africa, where he did his initial training, to the London of the early 1970s, where for a short time he foreswore medicine to become an anthropologist and poet; from ship's doctor on a Mediterranean cruise to family practitioner in London; from observer of curative trance dances in the favelas of Brazil to consulting with sangomas in South Africa. While trained in the Western tradition and with many years of practice in that system, Helman's anthropological insight leads him to view illness in a wider personal, social and cosmic context, considering elements beyond the purely physical, as do shamans and other traditional doctors. In pleading for this age-old holistic approach, he celebrates family medicine which 'in its quiet and unassuming way, and every day of the week, is still at the very frontline of human suffering'.

        Essential Mental Health Law

A Guide to the Revised Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act 2005

        by Anthony Maden

The new Mental Act, amending the 1983 Act, was passed in 2007 and came into operation only this year. The new Mental Capacity Act was passed in 2005 and came into operation in 2007. Together they represent major changes in how mental health professionals should care for their patients, reflecting the shift from institutional to community care that has taken place since 1983. Crucially the new Mental Health Act redefines mental disorder and removes the 'treatability' test. These and other changes have caused great controversy, but now the new legislation is in place there is a need to understand what it means for the individual practitioner when making decisions about the care of individual patients. "Essential Mental Health Law" is the practical guide that will provide this understanding. Neutral on the wrongs and rights of the new legislation, it sets the controversy on one side to help psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, mental health nurses and social workers with the day to day application of the law in clinical practice. Non-specialist lawyers will also find it invaluable.
