        The Acorn Time

        *Selected Illustrators at BCBF (2020)   Acorn time, a time to lift up your head and stand tall   Most people will have days when they feel shriveled up. Acorn time is a portrayal of comforting yourself and escaping from that feeling. The author has amalgamated the real body with the feeling and shrunk the protagonist’s body. Then, he goes into the paint frame of the squirrel that opens the acorn lid.  Inside, the protagonist rolls around aimlessly or stares at thesky emptying his mind and having a period of rest. After his mind has been healed a little, the protagonist comes out of the acorn and waits for other acorn time journeyers, staring into the starry sky together.

The teacher in the kindergarten looks so exhausted but she still encourages her students to develop their personalities and become loving towards their classmates. The illustrations make sure that each detail is depicted with humor. Readers can therefore better appreciate the humor in this story.

        Good Bye Ghost

        An inspiring story of a child overcoming its fear of ghosts and the dark   The transparent letters in the title implies the character is possessed by her fear of ghosts. The author-illustrator expresses abstraction in homage to Mark Rothko. She uses hues of blue to visualize the process of the child resolving her fear. Initially, one will notice the balance of the picture and background drawn with a white line, giving a sense of relief the book will have a happy ending. The calligraphy is halfshrouded, much like ghosts, transcending the meaning of the text. The way the girl confronts and curiously overcomes her fears shows such possibilities to the readers.

        Bullying, disability, lovesickness, and death; but nevertheless, a warm story of a beautiful starboy   Ssangsik became deaf because of an accident during his babyhood. After becoming a young adult, he had to stop schooling and spent most of his days on the neighborhood’s hill thinking about a girl, Mihyun, who was a constant visitor in the town during the holidays. Mihyun was the only one who played with him and he could hear his heart beating fast every time she was with him. Despite being bullied because of his disability, his love for Mihyun gave him a serene disposition as illustrated in the book. This was a perfect example of a pure heart amidst difficult circumstances.

        The harmonization of writings and paintings depict the pain of a family make up of a grandmother and a granddaughter   This picturebook depicts Yeon with a secret box containing a pair of rubber shoes, the kind that were traditionally used by grandmothers in Korea. Since her mother left her at an early age, Yeon longs for her grandmother to live with her the rest of her life. Overcoming the trauma of her mother leaving, readers understand this grief because of how much she wishes for her grandma to never leave her and to keep on loving her. Furthermore, the illustrations exemplify this story through the images of Yeon together with her grandma, with Yeon holding on to grandma’s new rubber shoes.

Upon arriving at a strange place, Daddy comes out and opens the door for granny to ather the used papers. He was so repentant of harboring resentment that he decided to help granny with her livelihood. Hence, he visits granny every night and brings used materials for her to sell. Has granny noticed anything amiss? The sharp lightning in the sky will help you know the answer. The illustrations work to bring this picture alive. The method used was so effective that the picture seems realistic.
