Good Bye Ghost
by Sunmi Lee
Description
An inspiring story of a child overcoming its fear of ghosts and the dark
The transparent letters in the title implies the character is possessed by her fear of ghosts. The author-illustrator expresses abstraction in homage to Mark Rothko. She uses hues of blue to visualize the process of the child resolving her fear. Initially, one will notice the balance of the picture and background drawn with a white line, giving a sense of relief the book will have a happy ending. The calligraphy is halfshrouded, much like ghosts, transcending the meaning of the text. The way the girl confronts and curiously overcomes her fears shows such possibilities to the readers.
