        Defectors and the Liberal Party 1910–2010

        A study of inter-party relationships

        by Alun Wyburn-Powell

        This book is the first analysis of political defections over a long time span. It investigates all the Liberal/Liberal Democrat MPs and former MPs who defected from the party between the elections of December 1910 and May 2010 - around one sixth of all those elected - as well as the smaller number of inward defectors. Each of the 122 defections was an expert judgment on the state of the party at a specific date. The research investigates the timing and reasons for all the defections and reveals long-term trends and underlying causes and apportions responsibility between leaders for them. The author finds some significant differences which distinguished defectors from loyalists and draws wider conclusions about the underlying factors which lead MPs to defect. This book will be of interest to students and lecturers of British politics and anyone interested in the relationship between British political parties in the last century. ;

        The Cardiff Five

        Innocent Beyond Any Doubt

        by Satish Sekar (Author)

        Satish Sekar shows how a miscarriage of justice destroyed families, divided communities and undermined confidence in the criminal justice system. The Cardiff Five case is the first example in the 1st of a homicide in which the original suspects were vindicated by the conviction of the true killer in the DNA age. By then, they had shared 16 years in prison for a crime they did not commit. Based on a 20 year quest for the truth Scrutinises this disturbing case from day one A wake-up call for British justice Calls for a fully independent judicial inquiry Takes the reader from the sadistic killing of a prostitute in Butetown, Cardiff in 1988 to the end of 2011 when aspects of the case were referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate in the aftermath of the acquittal of a number of police officers and civilians facing conspiracy charges. Reviews 'One of the most important books ever written about criminal justice': Michael Mansfield QC 'As the local MP I came to respect and admire Satish Sekar’s thoroughness and persistence': Alun Michael 'No-one is better suited to explaining and unravelling the complexities': Duncan Campbell 'Tireless work and extraordinary insight': Bob Woffinden Author Satish Sekar is a freelance journalist and researcher. His work includes that for the feature film 'In the Name of the Father' (about the Guildford Four) and TV and radio programmes such as Panorama, Trial and Error, Law in Action, Today and Channel 4 News. He has written for the Guardian, Independent, Daily Telegraph and other newspapers as well as the satirical magazine Private Eye. A consultant on forensic issues, he has been involved in various high profile issues, including police reform, complaints against the police and the use of DNA-testing and DNA-databases. The Contractors

        The Story of British Civil Engineering Contractors

        by Hugh Ferguson , Mike Chimes (Author)

        Fully illustrated in colour, The Contractors, is the first history of the challenges and adventures faced by British civil engineering contractors from their emergence with canal construction in the late-eighteenth century to the present day. Extraordinarily ambitious, largely unrecognised men who built the world’s infrastructure – its roads and railways, canals and bridges, docks and harbours, lighthouses and breakwaters, sea works and flood defences, water supply and irrigation, urban drainage and sewerage, gas works and power stations, and buildings of all shapes and sizes – these contractors took considerable risks, many failed in the process but others thrived and developed into some of the most powerful and influential industrialists of their day. Including profiles of many of the key figures and organisations in the industry through the ages, The Contractors explains what the business is about and where it comes from, sharing with a wider audience the exploits of these adventurers, haracterised by their inspiring leadership, sheer hard work, a strong constitution and perseverance in the face of adversity. Over time, the contractor has changed: from the great Victorian contractors, towering men whose business was their personal affair, through the twentieth century which has seen the rise of the corporate contractor, specialist contractors and the blurring of the distinction between consulting engineers and contractors, to the larger firms of recent years becoming larger through merger and acquisition but, as the examples in this book demonstrate, there is still room for the entrepreneur with vision, leadership and drive to become a highly successful contractor. The Contractors is a compulsory read for all those working in the industry, including civil engineers, those interested in the industry and its impact on the world, and the wider public. Readers will experience the boom of the canal and railway eras, working at home and abroad, the difficulties and opportunities brought by wars, the equipment used and the specialists and sub-contractors of today, fully illustrated with unique material from ICE and the firms themselves. Following the success of The Civil Engineers, Hugh Ferguson BSc(Eng) CEng FICE MCIHT and Mike Chrimes MBE BA MLS MCLIP bring their extensive experience and unique insight and passion to civil engineering contractors.
