        The Fig

        Botany, Production and Uses

by Ali Sarkhosh, Alimohammad Yavari, Louise Ferguson

The common fig Ficus carica L. is an ancient fruit native to the Mediterranean. Dried figs have been successfully produced and processed in arid regions with little sophisticated infrastructure for centuries. Figs are rich in fibre, trace minerals, polyphenols and vitamins, with higher nutrient levels than most fruits. Advances in agricultural production and postharvest technologies have not only improved the efficiency of dried fig production but have facilitated the development of both local and export high value fresh fig industries. The result is high quality fresh figs marketed internationally throughout the year. This book provides a comprehensive summary of fig growing, processing and marketing from a scientific and horticultural perspective. The nineteen chapters include in-depth discussions of: · History · Physiology · Breeding and Cultivars · Propagation · Site Selection and Orchard Establishment · Nutrition and Irrigation Management · Pollination Management · Integrated Pest Management · Greenhouse Production · Harvesting, Dried and Fresh Fig Processing · The Medicinal Uses of Figs · World Fig Markets The Fig: Botany, Production and Uses is a comprehensive applied resource for academic researchers, also producers, processors, and marketers of dried and fresh figs.

Advances in Fig Research and Sustainable Production

by Moshe A Flaishman, Uygun Aksoy

The common fig (Ficus carica L.) is one of the oldest fruits domesticated by humans, and is native to southwest Asia and the Mediterranean. Figs have been associated with health and prosperity since ancient times. They are rich in fibre, potassium, calcium, and iron, as well as being an important source of vitamins, amino acids, and antioxidants. In recent years, increased consumption has caused fig production to shift to new countries such as Mexico, Brazil, India, and China. However, fig is a challenging fruit crop to grow. It is susceptible to insect pests and diseases as well as injuries from abiotic stress during fruit development and ripening. As a delicate fruit it also requires complicated postharvest procedures and climate change presents additional challenges. Comprising 29 chapters written by international experts, the book includes sections on: History Biology and Orchard Management Fruit Ripening and Postharvest Management Pests and Diseases Omics Analysis Cultivars and Breeding Products and Trade. This volume serves as a comprehensive reference for current and future practices of fig production, consumption, research and innovation, and is essential for academic researchers, and those involved in research and development in the fig industry.

        Heimatlob

        Ein Bodensee-Buch

        by Martin Walser

        Bovine Tuberculosis

by Mark Chambers, Stephen Gordon, Francisco Olea-Popelka, Paul Barrow

This book is contemporary, topical and global in its approach, and provides an essential, comprehensive treatise on bovine tuberculosis and the bacterium that causes it, Mycobacterium bovis. Bovine tuberculosis remains a major cause of economic loss in cattle industries worldwide, exacerbated in some countries by the presence of a substantial wildlife reservoir. It is a major zoonosis, causing human infection through consumption of unpasteurised milk or by close contact with infected animals. Following a systematic approach, expert international authors cover epidemiology and the global situation; microbial virulence and pathogenesis; host responses to the pathogen; and diagnosis and control of the disease. Aimed at researchers and practising veterinarians, this book is essential for those needing comprehensive information on the pathogen and disease, and offers a summary of key information learned from human tuberculosis research. It will be useful to those studying the infection and for those responsible for controlling the disease.

        The Emerald Garden

        by Raja Malah

On every day off, the child – the central character – visits his grandmother who lives in her old house amidst a flower garden at the foot of a mountain. The book describes one of those visits so we can better understand the grandmother's personality, who is full of love and tenderness. We experience this visit through the child's narration of the details as he relates all the beautiful moments rooted in his heart and memory with great love and appreciation for his grandmother.   Days, months and years pass by – the wheel of life turns and the grandson becomes a father, then a grandfather. One day he decides to visit his grandmother's house with his grandchildren. The house had been transformed into a public park as per his grandmother’s wishes, as a gift to the people of the neighbourhood and their children, to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of that garden she loved and cared for her whole life. During that nostalgic visit, reality mixes with imagination and the present with the man’s past and he finds himself facing strange manifestations: the garden sparkles with precious stones and the fig tree near his heart bears emeralds, which surprises him, as if he is prey to the hallucination of imagination, only to discover the name chosen by the mayor for his grandmother's garden – a name that reinforces his vision of "Emerald Garden".   Age Range: 10+ years

Improved quality of life with the right vitamins and minerals

by Uwe Gröber and Prof. Dr. Klaus Kisters

Cancer patients often suffer from malnutrition. Not only do they lack energy-providing macronutrients such as protein, fats and carbohydrates, they particularly lack the micronutrients that regulate the metabolism. Micronutrients such as vitamin D, selenium, L-carnitine, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin C significantly contribute to supporting the immune system of cancer patients, reducing inflammatory processes, alleviating the side effects of cancer therapy, and improving their quality of life. This patient guide provides information about the relationship between cancer, malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, the influence of cancer therapeutics on micronutrient balance, and how cancer patients can support their therapy and improve their quality of life with a controlled intake of micronutrient

        Paris. Eine Liebe

        Erzählung

        by Urs Faes, Nanne Meyer

        by Rosa Raacz
