Norbert Elias (1897-1990) wurde am 22. Juni 1897 in Breslau geboren, wo er auch seine Kindheit verbrachte und nach dem 1. Weltkrieg Medizin und Philosophie studierte. Er promovierte bei Richard Hönigswald, wechselte bald zur Soziologie und wurde »inoffizieller Assistent« bei Karl Mannheim. 1933 floh er aus Deutschland über Paris nach England. Von 1954 bis 1962 war er Dozent für Soziologie an der Universität von Leicester, ab 1965 nahm er verschiedene Gastprofessuren unter anderem in Deutschland wahr; größere Anerkennung setzte hier aber erst mit der breiten Rezeption von Über den Prozeß der Zivilisation ein. 1977 erhielt er den Theodor W. Adorno-Preis der Stadt Frankfurt am Main. Ab 1984 ließ er sich dauerhaft in Amsterdam nieder, wo er am 1. August 1990 starb.

Der 1970 erstmals erschienene Band Was ist Soziologie? ist neben den Bänden zum Prozeß der Zivilisation der meistrezipierte Text von Norbert Elias. In ihm führt Elias in die grundlegenden Perspektiven und in entscheidende Etappen der Geschichte der Soziologie ein. Hier formuliert er zentrale Begriffe seiner Prozeßsoziologie wie »Figuration«, »Figurationswandel«, »Prozeßmodell« und »Spielmodelle« und erörtert die Aufgabe des Soziologen als eines »Mythenjägers«. Soziologie, so Elias, ermöglicht einen Zugang zur gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit, der distanzierter, weniger gefühlsbetont und den eigenen Zwängen weniger verhaftet ist, als dies beim »Alltagsmenschen « der Fall ist. Die Neuausgabe dieses klassischen Textes innerhalb der Edition der Gesammelten Schriften komplettiert den bekannten Text von 1970 um hier erstmals veröffentlichte Texte, die Bestandteil der ursprünglichen Fassung waren. Es handelt sich dabei um das Kapitel Über die Entdeckung des Gegenstandes der Soziologie und das Kapitel über Karl Marx. Die Spannung zwischen Ideologie und Wissenschaft, so zeigt Elias detailliert am Beispiel von Marx, ist nicht nur eine Sache der Rezipienten, sondern auch des Autors selbst. Um so wichtiger ist es, so Elias’ wissenschaftssoziologische Maxime, sich einem klassischen Autor weder rein systematisch noch rein historisch, sondern innerhalb eines Entwicklungsmodells zu nähern.

Damals schrieb die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: »... ein überaus lesbares Buch, in dem Elias mit erzählerischer Anschaulichkeit Antworten gibt auf die Frage, wie ›das Genie Mozart‹ zustande kommen konnte. Crop residues also play an important role in conserving soil moisture, preventing erosion and providing products such as fuel or thatch for smallholders. »Es gibt«, so Norbert Elias, »menschliche Erfahrungen und Einsichten, die sich klarer und überzeugender im Kunstwerk, etwa in einem Gedicht, ausdrücken und mitteilen lassen als in einer wissenschaftlichen Abhandlung.« Daß er mit diesem Satz auch auf seine eigene lyrische Produktion anspielte, wußten zu diesem Zeitpunkt nur wenige. Der unerwartete Erfolg einer Lesung eigener Gedichte, die er 1979 in einer Frankfurter Buchhandlung, der ›Bockenheimer Bücherwarte‹, abhielt, ermutigte ihn, einzelne Gedichte in Zeitungen und Zeitschriften zu publizieren. Zu einem Buch kam es damals jedoch nicht. Erst 1987 veröffentlichte der Suhrkamp Verlag den Band Los der Menschen. Gedichte/Nachdichtungen.Dieser Band wurde für die Neuausgabe um mehr als dreißig, zuvor verstreut publizierte Gedichte und Sprüche Norbert Elias' ergänzt, darunter einige englische Texte und ein französisches Gedicht, die nun erstmals in deutscher übersetzung vorliegen.Ein anderer Elias, sprachmächtig auch außerhalb seiner wissenschaftlichen Prosa, tritt hier zutage.
