Elle est née dans un Kibboutz de parents qui ont perdu leur famille dans la Shoa. Son seul frère a été tué en 1948 pendant la guerre d’Indépendance d’Israël. À l’âge de vingt ans, l’auteur a épousé le dramaturge p Words Yosef Bar-Yosef dont elle a eu quatre enfants; l’un d’entre eux s’est suicidé à l’âge de seize ans. Elle a subvenu aux besoins de sa famille en travaillant comme professeur dans une école secondaire et, par la suite, en rédigeant des guides pédagogiques. L’auteur n’a soutenu sa thèse de doctorat qu’après l’âge de quarante ans, devenant alors professeur de littérature hébraïque à l’Université Ben-Gourion. Elle a écrit huit ouvrages d’érudition mais également quinze livres de poésie et ces derniers lui ont valu de nombreux prix prestigieux. Son recueil de nouvelles Le mur (intitulé à l'origine Musique) a remporté le prix ASI (Association des Ecrivains Israéliens).Le professeur Bar-Yosef a traduit des œuvres de poésie et des romans depuis l’anglais, le français et le russe.

Les coqs, en tant qu’êtres humains, sont seulement des visiteurs momentanés dans un scenario bien plus étendu, dont la signification est trop élevée pour eux pour la saisir (mis à part le vieux coq Ba Ba Loop qui, à l’instar des prophètes d’antan, a des yeux pour voir, mais ne possède pas le pouvoir de changer quoi que ce soit). La seule manière d’apporter une signification à des temps d’une horreur telle est de tout investir pour la mémoire, ce qui constitue le cadre dans lequel ce roman est fondé : la foi en l’homme, oublier, se souvenir et l’essence de la vie au sein d’une époque impossible. Bien que se démarquant d'une description, principalement évoquée, de la petite enfance d'Adolf Hitler, Le camp de Frau Gruber ne se contente pas de raconter une histoire qui est, en de nombreux points, parallèle à l'histoire du judaïsme européen. Ce livre se transforme, au contraire, en une fable sur l'expérience vécue par l’humanité entière au XXème siècle, écrite à travers les yeux du XXIème siècle comme une bravade contemporaine. L'auteur, Ted Barr, 54 ans, a une maîtrise en économie et des diplômes dans des zones d'intérêt variées, y compris l'histoire allemande, le symbolisme, les tactiques de bataillon et de division, ainsi qu’en astronomie. Barr est un artiste de renom, spécialisé dans les galaxies et autres éléments du ciel. L'auteur a développé une technique de peinture unique, qu’il enseigne dans des ateliers dans le monde entier. Barr est le fondateur du groupe Current Art, et l’on peut avoir un aperçu de son activité artistique sur son site d'art, www.tedpaintings.com. La curiosité et le courage des enfants permirent finalement de prendre les criminels sur le fait, et d’éclaircir ainsi tout le mystère.

Ce livre se concentre surtout sur le dévouement exceptionnel des membres de l’organisation féminine Hadassah, qui s’est chargée de la mission de mettre en place des services modernes de santé publique pour la communauté juive de Palestine, sous le mandat britannique, sur la base de son expérience dans ce domaine en Amérique. Pendant les dix premières années, des services de santé publique ont été pourvus à 46 000 femmes enceintes, à 53 000 enfants en bas âge, les infirmières ont fourni 700 000 soins à domicile et 1,7 millions de consultations ont été effectuées dans les 44 dispensaires procurant des services pour le bien-être de la mère et l’enfant à travers le pays. Grace à ces services, la mortalité infantile a fortement baissé dans la communauté juive de 144:1000 en 1922 à 54:1000 in 1939 (en comparaison de 50:1000 aux U.S.A. et 53:1000 au Royaume Uni). Aucune autre entreprise de dévouements similaire n’a réussi à accomplir des résultats aussi remarquables en une période aussi courte. La mission entait fondée principalement sur l’idéologie sioniste de construction d’une nouvelle nation, saine de corps et d’esprit.
