Lange Zeit hatte es den Anschein, als sei die Säkularisierung, also die schwindende Bedeutung des Religiösen, ein ebenso stabiler gesellschaftlicher Trend wie die Individualisierung und die Globalisierung. Doch spätestens seit dem 11. September erleben wir eine Renaissance der Religionen: Die Debatten um Kruzifixe in Schulen, die mediale Hysterie nach der Wahl Papst Benedikts XVI. und den Islam in Europa zwingen uns nun, die Bedeutung von Begriffen wie religiös und säkular und die öffentliche Rolle der Religion zu überdenken. Zu diesem Zweck fand im Oktober 2009 in New York eine Art Gipfeltreffen der Philosophie statt, an dem mit Judith Butler, Craig Calhoun, Jürgen Habermas, Charles Taylor und Cornel West fünf der wichtigsten Denkerinnen und Denker der Gegenwart teilnahmen. Dieser Band dokumentiert die Beiträge des Symposiums sowie die anschließende Diskussion.

Mark Twain wurde am 30. November 1835 als Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida / Missouri geboren. Nach dem Tod des Vaters brach er mit zwölf Jahren die Schule ab und arbeitete zunächst als Lehrling in einer Druckerei, später auch als Journalist, Goldgräber, Publizist und Lotse auf einem Mississippi-Dampfer. Twain machte Reisen u.a. nach Europa und Palästina, bevor er sich in Hartford niederließ und heiratete. Neben der Schriftstellerei unternahm er auch Vortragsreisen in der ganzen Welt. Twain wurde insbesondere durch die Abenteuer von Huckleberry Finn und Tom Sawyer bekannt. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten amerikanischen Autoren des 19. Jahrhunderts und besticht besonders durch sein humoristisches und satirisches Talent. Noch zu seinen Lebzeiten starben seine Frau und die beiden Töchter, Twain selbst starb am 21. April 1910.

The West must wait presents a new perspective on the development of the Irish Free State. It extends the regional historical debate beyond the Irish revolution and raises a series of challenging questions about post-civil war society in Ireland. Through a detailed examination of key local themes - land, poverty, politics, emigration, the status of the Irish language, the influence of radical republicans and the authority of the Catholic Church - it offers a probing analysis of the socio-political realities of life in the new state. This book opens up a new dimension by providing a rural contrast to the Dublin-centred views of Irish politics. Significantly, it reveals the level of deprivation in local Free State society with which the government had to confront in the west. Rigorously researched, it explores the disconnect between the perceptions of what independence would deliver and what was achieved by the incumbent Cumann na nGaedheal administration.

This book provides a careful and systematic analysis of Anthony Ascham's career and writings for the first time in English. During the crucial period between the Second Civil War and the establishment of the English Republic, when he served as official pamphleteer of the Parliament and the republican government, Ascham put forward a complex argument in support of Parliament's claims for obedience which drew on the political thought of Grotius, Hobbes, Selden, Filmer and Machiavelli. He combined ideas taken from these authors and turned them into a powerful instrument of propaganda to be deployed in the service of the political agenda of his Independent patrons in Parliament. This investigation of Ascham's works brings together an intellectual analysis of his political thought and an exploration of the interaction between politics, propaganda and political ideas.

This book is an in-depth examination of the relations between Ireland and the former East Germany between the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It explores political, diplomatic, economic, media and cultural issues. The long and tortuous process of establishing diplomatic relations is unique in the annals of diplomatic history. Central in this study are the activities of the Stasi. They show how and where East German intelligence obtained information on Ireland and Northern Ireland and also what kind of information was gathered. A particularly interesting aspect of the book is the monitoring of the activities of the Irish Republican Army and the Irish National Liberation Army and their campaigns against the British army in West Germany. The Stasi had infiltrated West German security services and knew about Irish suspects and their contacts with West German terrorist groups. East German Intelligence and Ireland, 1949-90 makes an original contribution to diplomatic, intelligence, terrorist and Cold War studies. ;

Genre, audience, and religious change in early modern England

The pastor in print explores the phenomenon of early modern pastors who chose to become print authors, addressing ways authorship could enhance, limit or change clerical ministry and ways pastor-authors conceived of their work in parish and print. It identifies strategies through which pastor-authors established authorial identities, targeted different sorts of audiences and strategically selected genre and content as intentional parts of their clerical vocation. The first study to provide a book-length analysis of the phenomenon of early modern pastors writing for print, it uses a case study of prolific pastor-author Richard Bernard to offer a new lens through which to view religious change in this pivotal period. By bringing together questions of print, genre, religio-politics and theology, the book will interest scholars and postgraduate students in history, literature and theological studies, and its readability will appeal to undergraduates and non-specialists.
