Three Jacobean witchcraft plays
by Peter Corbin
For Jacobean society, witchcraft was a potent and very real force, an area of sharp controversy in which King James I himself participated and a phenomenon that attracted many dramatists and writers. The three plays in this volume reflect the variety of belief in witches and practice of witchcraft in the Jacobean period. Jacobean understanding of witchcraft is illuminated by the close study of these contrasting texts in relation to each other, and to other contemporary works: "The Masque of Queenes", "Dr Faustus", "Macbeth, and "The Tempest". The introduction and commentaries explore the theatrical potential of plays which, with the exception of "The Witch of Edmonton", have been hitherto lost to the dramatic repertory. ;

The Witch of Edmonton
by William Rowley, Thomas Dekker and John Ford
by Peter Corbin, David Bevington, Douglas Sedge
The Witch of Edmonton has received considerable attention recently both from scholars and critics interested in witchcraft practices and also from the directors in the theatre. The play, based on a sensational witchcraft trial of 1621, presents Mother Sawyer and her local community in the grip of a witch-mania reflecting popular belief and superstition of the time. This edition offers a thorough reconsideration of the text with a complete transcription of the original pamphlet by Henry Goodcole. This edition will be of particular interest not only to students of Renaissance Drama but also of the cultural history of the seventeenth century.. Open University adopted text (for their new Renaissance Drama module). ;

Thomas of Woodstock
by Peter Corbin, David Bevington, Douglas Sedge, Richard Dutton, Alison Findlay, Helen Ostovich
This anonymous manuscript play has long been the subject of scholarly dispute regarding its relationship with Shakespeare's Richard II. This edition, which thoroughly re-examines the text, situates the play within its historical and political context, relating it to the genre of chronicle drama to which it belongs. The manuscript is of particular interest in that it appears to have been used in the playhouse over a considerable period of time and contains what seems to be evidence of the theatre practice of the time. The play is also of special interest for its skilful and original handling of source material which may well have influenced Shakespeare's Richard II. The extensive appendices drawn from Holinshed, Grafton and Stow provide the reader with the opportunity to investigate the manner in which the dramatist has shaped the material. The editors argue for the play's stage-worthiness and dramatic complexity, suggesting that its range both of dramatic tone and social inclusiveness indicate the work of a dramatist of considerable skill and subtlety, equal or superior to the Shakespeare of the Henry VI plays. ;

Love, Gudrun Ensslin
by Simon Corbin
One banker per month will be assassinated unless the government takes practical steps to reduce the widening deficit between the rich and the poor. This is the threat made by maverick anarchist billionaire, Rory Carlisle, which is intended to be carried out by ex-Baader Meinhof operative, Georg Krendler. Love, Gudrun Ensslin imagines a situation in which Baader Meinhof style tactics are applied to the iniquities of 21st century global capitalism. The novel also tells the story of the first generation of Baader Meinhof (1968-1972) and warns of the dangers of ideology-led violence and intolerance.

When hematologist Dr. Carl Martin is called into a Little Rock emergency room, not even his expertise can save Benjamin Rasco from bleeding to death. But why did the man die? His condition shouldn’t have been fatal. And no one should have such bizarre red blood cells. Hoping to uncover a reason for the medical mystery, Carl travels to Rasco’s hometown, an isolated, religious community nestled deep in the Arkansas Mountains. Instead of answers, however, Carl’s faced with more questions—and a mysterious woman who stows away in his car. Sheltered Beth Corbin only wants to see the world for a few days before returning to Artisan, where the town leaders discourage mixing with the outside world. But after talking with Carl, Beth becomes increasingly distrustful of those leaders, and the suspicions she’s been harboring about the town become too intense to ignore. Together, Carl and Beth uncover an astounding medical conspiracy that not only affects all the residents of Artisan, but shatters every belief Carl ever held about himself.

SELF-ish: A Transgender Awakening
by Chloe Schwenke
SELF-ISH IS A NARRATIVE DRAWN FROM AN INTERNATIONAL LIFE, beginning with some early glimpses out at the world by a girl in a boy’s body. Chloe was raised as Stephen in a Marine Corps family and was sent off at age 14 to “man up” at a military academy. Later—and still embodied as a man—she ventured abroad to work in some of the roughest regions of Africa, the Gaza Strip, Turkey, and many other locales. Her far-flung global journey was matched in intensity by an inner identity and spiritual struggle and the associated ravages of depression, before she came to the revelation of being a transgender woman. At a time when many Americans are just waking up to the reality of the transgender phenomenon, this portrayal of Chloe’s life, her challenging gender transition, and her many accomplishments and adventures along the way (including being among the first three transgender political appointees in U.S. history, under President Obama), creates a poignant story of authenticity, self-discovery, and the meaning of gender set against a fascinating international backdrop.
