Christian Morgenstern wurde am 6. Mai 1871 in München geboren. 1892/93 begann er ein Studium der Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität Breslau, das er bald abbrach. Er zog nach Berlin und war dort als Journalist, Kultur- und Literaturkritiker und Redakteur tätig und veröffentlichte zahlreiche Beiträge und Glossen in Zeitschriften. Sein erster von seinen insgesamt vierzehn Lyrik-Bänden In Phantas Schloß erschien 1895. In der Folgezeit beschäftigte er sich mit der Übersetzung und Herausgabe der Werke von August Strindberg und Henrik Ibsen und schrieb für Max Reinhardts Berliner Kabarett »Schall und Rauch«. Von 1903 bis 1905 war er Redakteur der Zeitschrift »Das Theater« im Verlag von Bruno Cassirer, für den er auch als freier Lektor arbeitete. 1909 schloß sich Morgenstern dem Kreis der antroposophischen Gesellschaft um Rudolf Steiner an. Am 31. März 1914 starb er in Meran / Italien an den Folgen einer Tuberkulose-Erkrankung.

Christian dualism originated in the reign of Constans II (641-68). It was a popular religion, which shared with orthodoxy an acceptance of scriptual authority and apostolic tradition and held a sacramental doctrine of salvation, but understood all these in a radically different way to the Orthodox Church. One of the differences was the strong part demonology played in the belief system. This text traces, through original sources, the origins of dualist Christianity throughout the Byzantine Empire, focusing on the Paulician movement in Armenia and Bogomilism in Bulgaria. It presents not only the theological texts, but puts the movements into their social and political context.

This innovative, multi-contributed book, now available in paperback, argues convincingly that Russia will never be able to create a viable democracy as long as authoritarian regimes are able to flourish in the regions. The main themes covered are democratisation at the regional level, and the problems faced by the federal states in forging viable democratic institutions in what is now a highly assymetrical Federation. A major strength of the book lies in its combination of thematic chapters with case studies of particular regions and republics. Very little has been published to date on the actual processes of democratisation in particular republics and regions. The book takes into account the literature available on the 'new institutionalism' and outlines the importance of institutions in developing and maintaining democracy. It looks at the importance of sovereignty, federalism and democratic order, and considers the distinct problems of party-building in Russia's regions. Electoral politics are also considered fully, before the book goes on to consider the whole issue of regional politics and democratisation in five particular areas of Russia - Novgorod, the Komi Republic, Russia's Far East, Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. The authors, the majority of whom are internationally recognised experts in their field, have been drawn from Britain, the USA, Russia and Germany, giving the book a truly global perspective. ;

This book describes the methodology for predicting the genetic merit of animals in the context of genetic improvement in an animal breeding programme. Information on an animal and its relatives, on either the characteristic to be improved or from other traits, can be used to predict the animal’s genetic merit, taking account of the relationships between measurements and the economic values of traits. The methodology is developed from first principles, without unnecessary detail or complexity, and all the required statistical and mathematical concepts are fully described in the book. The text discusses the methods for combining different sources of information and illustrates their use with examples of breeding programmes in cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. A series of questions with detailed answers is included in the book, to help reinforce the ideas and provide some practical experience in the prediction of genetic merit. The text is aimed at final year undergraduate and first year postgraduate students of quantitative genetics and animal breeding.
