        Wie beurteilte Gershom Scholem, der große Gelehrte und Erforscher der jüdischen Mystik, die überlebenschancen des Judentums in einer säkularisierten Welt? Darüber geben zwei Texte Aufschluß, die in diesem Band zum ersten Mal auf deutsch veröffentlicht werden.Der Vortrag »Einige Betrachtungen zur jüdischen Theologie in dieser Zeit« und ein Gespräch, in dem er über sich und sein Denken Auskunft gibt, entstanden in den Jahren, in denen Scholem an seinen autobiographischen Büchern Walter Benjamin – die Geschichte einer Freundschaft (1975) und Von Berlin nach Jerusalem. Jugenderinnerungen (1977) arbeitete. Der engagierte, streitbare Denker äußert sich hier direkter, offener, persönlicher zu wichtigen Fragen und Themen, die sein Leben und Werk prägten: Er spricht von seiner Beziehung zu Rosenzweig und Benjamin, seiner Hinwendung zum Judentum und zum Zionismus sowie seiner Wahrnehmung der gegenwärtigen jüdischen Befindlichkeit in Israel und der Diaspora. In seinem prägnanten überblick über die begründenden Momente der jüdischen Theologie wie im Gespräch nimmt Scholem klar Stellung zu der Frage, welche Bedeutung in seiner Sicht der jüdisch-religiösen Tradition in der modernen Welt zukommt.»Es ist selbstverständlich, daß die Frage nach unserem Verhältnis zur Tradition des Judentums und zu dessen Geschichte als die eines Volkes, das sich in entscheidender Weise unter religiöser Inspiration geformt und entwickelt hat, auch in einem Zeitalter der Säkularisation nicht bedeutungslos oder gar hinfällig geworden ist.«
