Kaum jemand in den westdeutschen Verlagen der fünfziger Jahre wollte etwas von den unbekannten jungen Polen Milosz, Szymborska, Herbert, Rózewicz hören, deren Gedichte ihnen auf den Schreibtisch flatterten, eingeschickt von einem Geschäftsstellenleiter der Allianz-Versicherung, Karl Dedecius, der sich auf mühevollen Wegen - und der Tätigkeit im Dienst der feindlichen Großmächte verdächtigt - Bücher aus Polen kommen ließ und an den Abenden und Wochenenden Gedichte übersetzte. Was trieb diesen Menschen an, dessen Lebenswerk heute zum Inbegriff der deutsch-polnischen Verständigung geworden ist? Aufgewachsen im vielsprachigen Milieu der Textilmetropole Lodz als Sohn einer schwäbischen Mutter und eines böhmisch-deutschen Vaters, wurde er mit Ausbruch des Krieges zum polnischen Arbeitsdienst, dann zur deutschen Wehrmacht eingezogen und geriet 1943 in Stalingrad in siebenjährige russische Kriegsgefangenschaft.
