        Dogwood

        by Lindsey Parnell

“You’d think she was an angel if she wasn’t always flying so close to hell.” Released from prison on probation, 19-year-old Harper Haley returns to the brutal, sweaty, Dogwood scented landscape of her youth. Chronicling her homecoming and struggle for rehabilitation, this is the story of one girl’s sin, guilt and resurrection. At the heart of the novel is the dangerous, obsessive sisterhood between Harper and her childhood friends Collier, a seductively destructive debutante, and Caro, a jaded dreamer yearning for escape. As Harper backslides into a violent cycle of sex, drugs and abuse, the sisterhood at the core of her identity, and of the story, begins to unravel. Climaxing in the confession of the act that irreversibly altered her life and those closest to her, Dogwood is Harper’s story, the one she can’t forget and the one she cannot speak. About the author Lindsay Parnell was born on a marine base in Jacksonville and grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia. The two suddenly reappeared in Berlin after having shunned Eva and Matea for ten years, because they had separated the baby witches. The grannies claim they want to help Elli and Idi become real witches, but all they really do is selfish hocus pocus: At Idi’s swimming contest in Hamburg they make her swim way too fast and Idi thinks Elli used her magical powers. She is furious and tells Elli to leave her alone. Thomas too is very angry and says that he will have to rethink moving to Berlin, if the grannies continue to interfere with their lives. Elli is devastated. If that is how the ghastly grannies are going to behave, she will have to get rid of them. Her best friend Philip is there to help her with the new operation. They trick Matilda and Esther into acting against the code of honour of witches, which leads to them losing their magical powers and Idi can safely move to Berlin.

      • The Mystery of Right and Wrong

        by Wayne Johnston

Rachel, a hyper-graphic, hyper-lexic South African expat who is obsessed with The Diary of Anne Frank, is the youngest of four van Hout daughters whose father Hans, a Dutch-South African accounting professor, moved his family to Newfoundland to make a new start.   When Wade, a young writer, meets and falls in love with Rachel, he learns that nothing in the world of the van Houts is what it seems, and that Rachel’s obsessions have deeper and more disturbing roots than he couldever have imagined. Each of the four beautiful, dutiful daughters is, in her distinctive way, a wounded soul. The oldest, Gloria, is a hyper-sexual exhibitionist (or is she?) who, by the age of 28, has been married five times. Carmen is addicted to every drug her Afrikaans drug pusher husband Fritz can lay his hands on. Sardonic and self-deprecating Bethany, aka Deathany, is fighting a losing battle with anorexia. And then there is Rachel, who reads and writes obsessively, diarizing her days in a secret language of her own invention.   Set in Newfoundland, apartheid era South Africa, wartime Amsterdam, and two concentration camps this is an intricately woven and propulsive novel that chronicles the unmasking of a mythomaniacal family and the sisters’ fight for love and their very lives. Informed by real events, it is a real tour de force.

        CONFIDENT UNDER PRESSURE

Discover the Hidden Advantages of Stress

        by Rick Lewis

The vast majority of “stress less” books are concerned with the modern problem of too much stress and how to reduce it. Not this one Confident Under Pressure is about the advantages of stress, clarifying the critical role that intentionally engaged stress plays in personal and professional development. Author Rick Lewis makes his living by putting leaders, executives and organizational teams into challenging situations to help them see the habitual ways they respond to stress. He then offers unique guidance in the practice of “stress production,” rather than stress reduction – revealing how to make a dynamic turnaround, an attitude of YES to stress.  Confident Under Pressure weaves colorful personal stories, recent neuroscience, the research of human performance experts, and the inspiration of leading business executives into a compelling and lucid argument for moving toward stress, conflict and change in order to become more creative, effective and happy in life, on the way to making our highest contribution in the world. The result is an eminently readable and practical book that anyone can use, at home, on the job, and in one-on-one relationships. The author has been a corporate consultant for over twenty years, with contracts with over 500 corporations, associations and government agencies. He has presented to audiences that have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, the Prime Minister of Canada, and worked with CEOs, dignitaries, and government organizations from The Federal Reserve Bank to the International Board of Mastercard. The result of this lifetime of experience - both successes and failures - is distilled within this book.
