View Rights PortalThis book examines the Thatcher government's attempt to revolutionise Britain's pensions system in the 1980s and create a nation of risk-taking savers with an individual stake in capitalism. Drawing upon recently-released archival records, it shows how the ideas motivating these reforms journeyed from the writings of neoliberal intellectuals into government and became the centrepiece of a plan to abolish significant parts of the UK's welfare state and replace these with privatised personal pensions. Revealing a government that veered between political caution and radicalism, the book explains why this revolution failed and charts the malign legacy left by the evolutionary changes that ministers salvaged from the wreckage of their reforms. The book contributes to understanding of policy change, Thatcherism, and international neoliberalism by showing how major reforms to social security could reflect neoliberal thought and yet profoundly disappoint their architects.

Mazen, a young boy, is one day surprised by their neighbor Bassam shouting with anger in the street “My parking spot is a red line!” Does this mean he plans to paint the street red, asks Mazen to his mother? The mother explains to Mazen that what Bassam means is simply that no one is to park in his place. The notion is still vague to Mazen: Why red? Does it have anything to do with red traffic lights? The mother tries again “When something is a red line, it means that it is off limits to others”. In this illustrated album, Samar Barraj boldly addresses the delicate issue of child sexual abuse. Acknowledging the complexity of the boundary it tackles, the book determines it through examples the mother and child raise in their conversation. Mazen’s spontaneous remarks and comments point out the difficulty of defining this red line, and make of the book a realistic example of such a conversation. The illustrations develop the notion further, by representing situations in which the red line might be crossed – one may be on his bicycle, at his computer, or approached by a respectable-looking old man in the street. The body parts are not named, but are represented in a naïve drawing Mazen made, though the text insists on the importance of preserving the body as a whole. The colorful images and constant presence of the mother and parents make of the book a reassuring experience despite the gravity of the topic.

Als er dem französischen Regisseur Roger Blin dieses und sein zweites Stück, »Warten auf Godot«, zur Aufführung anbot, entschied sich Blin für das zweite, weniger darstellerreiche Stück. Die Uraufführung 1953 war ein großer Erfolg, und Beckett zog daraufhin »Eleutheria« zurück; es wurde bis heute nicht aufgeführt. Victor, der Held der Geschichte und der unglückliche Sohn, hat seine bourgeoise Familie, Mutter und Vater Krap, verlassen. Dadurch aber, daß die beiden Schauplätze des Stückes, Victors Pension und der Krapsche Salon, nebeneinanderliegen, ineinander übergehen, gleichzeitig zu sehen sind, bleibt jederzeit ›gegenwärtig‹, was der verlorene Sohn tut, wie im Salon ›andererseits‹ recht merkwürdige Besucher vor sich hin und aneinander vorbei räsonieren. Im zweiten Akt in Victors Pension erfährt er durch seine Mutter und seine Verlobte vom Tode seines Vaters, und die Handlung wird nun immer absurder, um schließlich im dritten Akt einem verrückten Höhepunkt entgegenzusteuern. Zwar sind in dieser brillanten, bitterbösen Familienstudie Situationen, Figuren und Themen angelegt, die in den folgenden Werken ausgefeilt, ergänzt oder verkürzt wiederkehren, nicht aber derart jugendlich impulsiv und surreal wie in diesem ersten Theaterstück von Samuel Beckett."
