Since her mother left her at an early age, Yeon longs for her grandmother to live with her the rest of her life. Overcoming the trauma of her mother leaving, readers understand this grief because of how much she wishes for her grandma to never leave her and to keep on loving her. Furthermore, the illustrations exemplify this story through the images of Yeon together with her grandma, with Yeon holding on to grandma’s new rubber shoes.

The method used was so effective that the picture seems realistic.

        Good Bye Ghost

        An inspiring story of a child overcoming its fear of ghosts and the dark   The transparent letters in the title implies the character is possessed by her fear of ghosts. The author-illustrator expresses abstraction in homage to Mark Rothko. She uses hues of blue to visualize the process of the child resolving her fear. Initially, one will notice the balance of the picture and background drawn with a white line, giving a sense of relief the book will have a happy ending. The calligraphy is halfshrouded, much like ghosts, transcending the meaning of the text. The way the girl confronts and curiously overcomes her fears shows such possibilities to the readers.

Acorn time is a portrayal of comforting yourself and escaping from that feeling. The author has amalgamated the real body with the feeling and shrunk the protagonist’s body. Then, he goes into the paint frame of the squirrel that opens the acorn lid.  Inside, the protagonist rolls around aimlessly or stares at thesky emptying his mind and having a period of rest. After his mind has been healed a little, the protagonist comes out of the acorn and waits for other acorn time journeyers, staring into the starry sky together.

In the back of the book, which is written together with all the images shown above, serves to tell each character’s moment that they met in their stance. The book unravels the same event from the different perspectives of the four characters.

After becoming a young adult, he had to stop schooling and spent most of his days on the neighborhood’s hill thinking about a girl, Mihyun, who was a constant visitor in the town during the holidays. Mihyun was the only one who played with him and he could hear his heart beating fast every time she was with him. Despite being bullied because of his disability, his love for Mihyun gave him a serene disposition as illustrated in the book. This was a perfect example of a pure heart amidst difficult circumstances.
