The Republic of Letters emerged during the seventeenth century as a concept to describe the interaction between scholars across Europe and beyond. While the concept was an imaginary one, it was firmly grounded in a reality of close circles of interaction between intellectuals, which had always existed but which was now endowed with a renewed sense of collaboration and participation within this community without barriers of statehood or creed. These fifteen essays explore differing aspects of collaboration and interdisciplinarity in the context of the radical change in mindset that the emergence of the Republic of Letters had fostered. Essays deal with French and English theatre, travel writing, the identity of the woman writer, the nature and function of gossip, scholarly interaction, and political and theological ideologies. The concluding essay provides a synthesis of the nature of seventeenth-century scholarship. The volume offers new insights into the mechanisms and workings of the Republic of Letters and charters the transition of scholarly pursuit being classified, even by some scholars themselves, as a solitary and sometimes pedantic pursuit to the notion of a network of ideas and interchange. This self-identification with a transnational league which knew no limits of geography, resources, gender or class marks a radical transition in the history of ideas and was to have far-reaching consequences, solidly preparing the way for the Enlightenment.

Gestures: A body of work is a cross-disciplinary collection of feminist approaches to 'gesture' that considers the term's complex registers across embodied, aesthetic and political scenes. Attending to gestural movements, languages, feelings and communications, the book argues that gestures can unsettle gendered, sexed and racialised relations, norms and affects. Contributors activate the lens of gesture to offer innovative readings of art and literary works from the 1960s onwards and in transnational contexts. Experiments in art writing and autotheory reflect on the entanglement of the body, gesture and feminist practice. The book proposes that gesture be rethought as a mode of feminist practice that includes art, writing, performance and theory. Mixing disciplines, forms, genres and voices, these contributions and the book's gestural structure offer a bold intervention into the conventions of critical writing.

Una aproximación desde la escultura

Esta publicación sintetiza una extensa investigación y experimentación sobre el espacio en la escultura a partir de un análisis interdisciplinar desde la arquitectura y otras artes que abordan el tema de la espacialidad. La reflexión teórica sobre el origen y desarrollo experimental de la escultura se genera a partir de la obra como conclusión proyectual y desde la misma se observan sus resonancias en este contexto interdisciplinario de la experiencia del espacio. Complementan este trabajo una serie de imágenes que constituyen universos comprimidos de ideas y mensajes codificados en un lenguaje que es propio de las artes visuales. En el libro se revisa el pensamiento teórico que permite una reflexión sobre la experiencia del espacio y las relaciones entre la escultura, la arquitectura y otras disciplinas. Se analizan obras de diversos autores en las que se manifiesta el paso de la objetualidad a la espacialidad escultórica. Se indaga la condición iterativa del proceso y los instrumentos proyectuales que establecen el vínculo entre la imaginación y la representación física de lo imaginado. Se reflexiona sobre el proceso compositivo del espacio escultórico y su efecto en la inducción de una experiencia poética. Finalmente, en el anexo se presenta una mirada diferente, a modo de ficciones espaciales, a partir de un conjunto de croquis inspirados en las esculturas, dibujados por Mario Ubilla Sanz. "Aunque está plagado de ejemplos y demuestra un conocimiento acucioso de la materia que desarrolla, no constituye, en rigor, un texto de estudio. No es tampoco un ensayo o un manual. Case Studies in the Construction of High Achievement

What is it like to be YOUNG, GIFTED AND WORKING CLASS in contemporary England? How do working class family values support high educational achievement? What do researchers and policy makers have to learn about giftedness from working class families? These provocative questions are explored in this ground-breaking book. Most studies of giftedness focus on the characteristics of individuals, and draw upon psychological frameworks to understand them. Participants in most gifted education programmes are recruited disproportionately from the higher social classes. Sceptical of the concept of giftedness, Mazzoli Smith and Campbell question conventional methodologies, using a narrative approach to understand how four families of working class origins, each with a gifted child, construct their values in relation to education and social class. They explore the influence of their family histories, cultural values and life styles upon educational engagement and achievement. The authors show that gifted education policies are poorly matched to the values of these families and argue that much research into giftedness has been flawed by social and cultural discrimination. They propose an agenda for change in research paradigms in the giftedness field, which should be characterized by interdisciplinarity and more culturally relative conceptions of giftedness.

Thinking through the Environment: Green Approaches to Global History is a collection offering global perspectives on the intersections of mind and environment across a variety of discourses - from history and politics to the visual arts and architecture. Its geographical coverage extends to locations in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. A primary aim of the volume is, through the presentation of research cases, to gather an appropriate methodological arsenal for the study of environmental history. Among its concerns are interdisciplinarity, eco-biography, the relationship of political and environmental history and culturally varied interpretations and appreciations of space - from Bangladesh to the Australian outback. The approaches of the indigenous peoples of Lapland, Mount Kilimanjaro and elsewhere to their environments are scrutinised in several chapters. Balancing survival - both in terms of resource exploitation and of response to natural catastrophes - and environmental protection is shown to be an issue for more and less developed societies, as illustrated by chapters on Sami reindeer herding, Sudanese cattle husbandry and flooding and water resource-use in several parts of Europe. As the title suggests, the volume exposes the lenses - tinted by culture and history - through which humans consider environments; and also foregrounds the importance of rigorous ‘thinking through’ of the lessons of environmental history and the challenges of the environmental future.

Peace seems to have been elusive in Colombian history. The ups and downs in the negotiation processes, the unfulfilled promises, and the political polarization have made Colombia a nation in a state of continuous crisis and that, in spite of itself - to take up the old Bushnell phrase - has managed to stay afloat and, above all, do not lose hope for a stable and lasting peace. There have been numerous attempts to build it and they seem to have been unsuccessful, especially because a good part of the collective representation that we have of them has been built from the media apparatus that, in the case of our country, has been at the service of power and that it has resulted in skepticism that, especially since the 1990s, has tended to transform into a strong polarization. With this book, we want not only to think about peace and (post) conflict from communication but to remind (us), once again, that we can still be we.

The Philosophical Colony. Writing the History of Philosophy in the 18th-19th Centuries

The philosophical colony appeared as early as 1700 in Germany, then became institutionalized in Europe at the end of the century. Around 1800, the writing of the history of philosophy was based on an idea that made it exclusive to the peoples of modern Europe, with the East playing the role of contrast. The work thus approaches philosophy as an intellectual device of a conceptual nature, but also as a social practice: historians of philosophy held the object of their narratives to be a geopolitical and cultural reality; the history of philosophy was constituted in interaction with new disciplines (linguistics, ethnology, anthropology, etc.).

This may be the reason why, when talking about vocation, the word echoes all the elements that make up the identity of the human being: corporeity and spirituality, intelligence and sensitivity, conscience and freedom, personal biography and collective history. Without vocation, the personal being is doomed to treat oneself and to be treated with indifference.
