Ocean Ridges and Trenches, Revised Edition

        by Peter Aleshire

Ocean Ridges and Trenches, Revised Edition immerses readers in the mysteries of the world's sea floors, from the surprising creatures of the Galapagos Rift to the devastating tsunamis of the Java Trench. This eBook reveals how 10 undersea mountain ranges and valleys came to be, how and why it has changed over the span of geologic time, and its contributions to the environment. The ridges and trenches covered span the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean, and the San Andreas Fault, site of many of California’s earthquakes. Each chapter provides illuminating material on environmental challenges and expert reports on science in action, with details on field studies conducted at each sea-floor site. Additional articles cover related high-interest topics, such as giant squids, magnetic fields, and plate tectonics.

        Mein Leben 1809 - 1882

Herausgegeben von seiner Enkelin Nora Barlow. Mit einem Vorwort von Ernst Mayr. Aus dem Englischen von Christa Krüger

by Charles Darwin, Nora Barlow, Christa Krüger, Ernst Mayr

Charles Darwin wurde am 12. Februar 1809 in Shrewsbury geboren. Christa Krüger übersetzte u.a. Werke von Louis Begley, Penelope Fitzgerald und Richard Rorty. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Scottishness and Irishness in New Zealand since 1840

by Angela McCarthy, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie

This book examines the distinctive aspects that insiders and outsiders perceived as characteristic of Irish and Scottish ethnic identities in New Zealand. When, how, and why did Irish and Scots identify themselves and others in ethnic terms? What characteristics did the Irish and the Scots attribute to themselves and what traits did others assign to them? Did these traits change over time and if so how? Contemporary interest surrounding issues of ethnic identities is vibrant. In countries such as New Zealand, descendants of European settlers are seeking their ethnic origins, spurred on in part by factors such as an ongoing interest in indigenous genealogies, the burgeoning appeal of family history societies, and the booming financial benefits of marketing ethnicities abroad. This fascinating book will appeal to scholars and students of the history of empire and the construction of identity in settler communities, as well as those interested in the history of New Zealand.

Chinese religion in contemporary Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan

The cult of the Two Grand Elders

        by Fabian Graham

In Singapore and Malaysia, the inversion of Chinese Underworld traditions has meant that Underworld demons are now amongst the most commonly venerated deities in statue form, channelled through their spirit mediums, tang-ki. The Chinese Underworld and its sub-hells are populated by a bureaucracy drawn from the Buddhist, Taoist and vernacular pantheons. Under the watchful eye of Hell's 'enforcers', the lower echelons of demon soldiers impose post-mortal punishments on the souls of the recently deceased for moral transgressions committed during their prior incarnations. Chinese religion in contemporary Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan offers an ethnography of contemporary Chinese Underworld traditions, where night-time cemetery rituals assist the souls of the dead, exorcised spirits are imprisoned in Guinness bottles, and malicious foetus ghosts are enlisted to strengthen a temple's spirit army. Understanding the religious divergences between Singapore and Malaysia (and their counterparts in Taiwan) through an analysis of socio-political and historical events, Fabian Graham challenges common assumptions about the nature and scope of Chinese vernacular religious beliefs and practices. Graham's innovative approach to alterity allows the reader to listen to first-person dialogues between the author and channelled Underworld deities. Through its alternative methodological and narrative stance, the book intervenes in debates on the interrelation between sociocultural and spiritual worlds, and promotes the destigmatisation of spirit possession and discarnate phenomena in the future study of mystical and religious traditions.

        by Manfred Reitz

Falsche Kunst und echte Fälscher (it 1534)

        Islandscapes and Tourism

        An Anthology

by Joseph M Cheer, Solene Prince, Philip Hayward

The links between islands and tourism, as sights of pleasure is embodied in the touristification of sun, sand and sea. Islandscapes are central to the tourist imaginaries that shape islands as touristified places - curated, designed and commodified for both mass tourism and more niche inclined versions. Yet while islands are parlayed for touristic pleasure seekers, islands are also home to longstanding communities that have variously battled with the tyranny of distance from metropolitan centres, as well as the everyday challenges of climate change effects, and benefitted from their isolation from modern-day pressures. To what extent are islandscapes resilient to rapidly changing utilities, significances and ways of life wrought by tourism expansion? The vulnerability-resilience duality remains firmly entrenched in the discourse on islands where tourism has become prominent. Although tourism provides some resiliency, overall, islandscapes remain subject to externally driven fast and slow change that exercises an overwhelming influence. This anthology of articles previously published in the journal Shima explores emergent themes that describe how island peoples adapt and respond in localised cultural islandscapes as a consequence of tourism expansion. It is aimed at researchers in island studies, tourism, sustainability, human geography, cultural studies, sociology and anthropology. The anthology will also be of interest to those with an abiding interest in the trajectories of islands and their peoples, particularly where tourism has come to shape islandscapes.

        Requiem for A Holy Island

        by Zecharia Plavin

There was a tiny island in the Far East populated by tall, gifted people plagued by malignant ideology and ruled by merciless leaders. However, a noble few were dedicated to peacefully rescuing their people from tyranny and death. Dr. Solomon Jekavpils reads about this unfamiliar place in the diary of the late pianist Adelaide Fourangier. Meanwhile, Solomon's former classmate, Nelly, manipulates him to search for Illirio Mariafels, her lost love. The story spans entire lifetimes in pre-war France, French Saigon, the island, and Paris in the late twentieth century; the diary reveals many crucial personalities. After several setbacks in her life, Fourangier joins the leading liberal islander and devotes her life to teaching piano to children. Life on the island transforms her into a caring human being, inspired pianist, and master tutor. Illirio, her heroic son, can inspire wonderful kindness with his chanting. Fourangier’s diary reveals her unusual family’s secrets and describes the tragic fate of the island and its people. Dr. Zecharia Plavin, a concert pianist and educator, was born in 1956 in Lithuania but has lived in Israel since his youth. He studied under Louis Kentner, the great pianist. Prof. Plavin teaches at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and Ono Academic College. He is an author, composer, scholar, and self-proclaimed dull fellow with no sense of humor… An English-language eBook edition was published in summer 2015 by Samuel Wachtman’s Sons, Inc., CA. 432 pages, 15 x 22 .5cm.

Authorship and authority: the writings of James VI and I

        by Jane Rickard

James VI of Scotland and I of England participated in the burgeoning literary culture of the Renaissance, not only as a monarch and patron, but as an author in his own right, publishing extensively in a number of different genres over four decades. As the first monograph devoted to James as an author, this book offers a fresh perspective on his reigns in Scotland and England, and also on the inter-relationship of authorship and authority, literature and politics in the Renaissance. Beginning with the poetry he wrote in Scotland in the 1580s, it moves through a wide range of his writings, including scriptural exegeses, political, social and theological treatises and printed speeches, concluding with his manuscript poetry of the early 1620s. The book combines extensive primary research into the preparation, material form and circulation of these varied writings, with theoretically informed consideration of the relationship between authors, texts and readers. The discussion thus explores James's responses to, and interventions in, a range of literary, political and religious debates, and reveals the development of his aims and concerns as an author.

        Japan and World Timber Markets

        by Peter Blandon

Two thirds of Japan is covered with forest that is rapidly reaching maturity and could be felled in the near future. This would dramatically increase domestic timber supply and have implications, not only for Japan, but also the main timber exporting nations of the world. However, Japanese domestic supply has been stagnating and forest management has become less intensive. At the same time, timber suppliers to Japan are themselves coming under various pressures which are likely to lead to reductions in their timber harvests and export potential. This book examines these issues and looks at what would happen if Japan were to utilise this resource within the next two decades, from both a domestic and international point of view. Primarily aimed at advanced students of forestry, economics and business, this book will also be of interest to government research agencies, timber processors and exporters of timber to Japan.
