It explores the British and European reception of Blake's work from the late nineteenth century to the present day, with a particular focus on the counterculture. Opening with two articles by the late Michael Horovitz, an important figure in the 'Blake Renaissance' of the 1960s, the issue goes on to investigate the ideological struggle over Blake in the early part of the twentieth century, with particular reference to W. B. Yeats. This is followed by articles on the artistic avant-garde and underground of the 1960s and on Blake's significance for science fiction authors of the 1970s. The issue closes with an article on the contemporary Belgian art collective maelstrÖm reEvolution.

Max Tarnavskii is a young writer once recognized by the young audience for his debut novel about young counterculture but then scathingly criticized for his third novel "Where the Wind Is", — a philosophical parable about a hermit living in a lighthouse by the sea. Having fallen off the readers’ radar, he suffers through his inability to create any further. It’s the second half of the 2010s, Kyiv. On the New Year’s Eve Max gets an offer from Alisa, a first-year student, to go on a tour with a young rock band as a gonzo journalist to revive his counterculture icon status. Max balks at first, but an unexpected brawl on Facebook in which Max is reminded about his passivity during the Maidan and his uncertain ideological views in the days of the ATO and the war, and a critical review of Max’s new novel outline from his literary agent urge Tarnavskii to accept the offer after all. The rock band he joins for a tour from Western to Eastern Ukraine has turned up to be an inept group trip planner, so the protagonist has to take up the role of a leader capable of saving the band from a total fiasco. Traveling with the teenage freshmen becomes the young writer’s road to adulthood, forgiveness, and an attempt to forgive his own mistakes of youth in particular. Just to earn his living, Max agrees to perform with the rockers while on tour, flies in the face of his creative fears, and is forced to redefine himself as a writer once again. He faces the dangers of concert disruptions, the band split up, public disapproval, and threats of physical violence. Ability to write on the road becomes his only way to save and revive his own self, stand up to his hidden weaknesses, reconsider his role in a society that undergoes a war. A post-tour trip with Alisa to her grandmother who lives in a village on the liberated from the occupation territories becomes Tarnavskii’s hope for a renewal. On this trip Max gets a chance to full recovery, because in Tarnavskii’s mind these are the parts, where he will find the sand bar with the lighthouse where the hermit from his novel "Where the Wind Is" lives.
This collection of opinion journalism is a comprehensive and far-sighted look at the past, present, and future of Ukraine in political and cultural aspects. The author meticulously describes the phenomena of Ukrainian realities, in particular, analyzes the Ukrainian Maidans (2004 and 2013), examines the crisis of the Ukrainian elite, Ukrainians’ identity crisis by nationality or citizenship, and also describes in details the USSR iron curtain of the 20th century in the sphere of culture and literature. Most of these essays were published in periodicals, mainly in English and Ukrainian, sometimes in Polish and German, and occasionally in such languages as Farsi, Turkish, and Catalan. In História social do LSD no Brasil, Júlio Delmanto analyzes the details of the first court case for trafficking lysergic acid diethylamide in the country, which took place thirteen months after the dictatorship was hardened by AI-5. The book covers the long road between the discovery of LSD in Switzerland in 1943 and the arrest of a young artist in the city of São Paulo in 1970, a case crossed by episodes of torture and journalistic sensationalism. The second volume of "Historical Essays" includes works on the history of modern Ukraine. Oliver Cromwell has been both applauded and reviled and his memory invoked in periods and in countries other than his own. This complex historiography has left us today with many different versions of Cromwell as man, general and statesman of which the conflicting images are the subject of this book. Available in paperback for the first time, this classic study is based on the unfinished magnum opus of the leading scholar of seventeenth-century history, Roger Howell (1936?89). It includes chapters by a team of leading international experts on a broad range of subjects originally planned by Howell himself. It includes Howell's studies of the reactions to Cromwell in the Restoration period and in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Added to these are reprints of his essays on psychohistorical approaches to Cromwell and on Cromwell's contribution to English liberty. Further historiographical portraits of the Protector are offered in chapters which consider Cromwell and the Glorious Revolution; Carlyle's Cromwell; Irish images of the Protector; American interpretations; and the comparisons made between Cromwell and the twentieth-century dictators. ;
Marcel Reich-Ranicki wurde am 2. Juni 1920 in Wloclawek / Polen geboren. Sein Vater, David Reich, war ein polnischer Jude, seine Mutter, Helene eine deutsche Jüdin. Die Familie siedelte 1929 nach Berlin um. Dort besuchte er das Gymnasium. Im Herbst 1938, kurz nach dem Abitur, wurde er verhaftet und nach Polen deportiert, wo er ab 1940 im Warschauer Getto leben musste. Anfang 1943 gelang ihm zusammen mit seiner Frau Teofila die Flucht aus dem Getto in den Warschauer Untergrund. Seine Eltern und sein Bruder wurden von den Nationalsozialisten ermordet. Zunächst im Polnischen Diplomatischen Dienst tätig, fand er seine Berufung schließlich in der Literatur. Er arbeitete für Zeitungen, im Rundfunk und als Übersetzer. 1958 siedelte Reich-Ranicki in die Bundesrepublik Deutschland über. Er lebte von 1959 bis 1973 in Hamburg, dann zog er nach Frankfurt am Main. Er war für die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Die Welt und die Wochenzeitung Die Zeit als Literaturkritiker tätig und gehörte von 1958 bis 1967 als solcher der Gruppe 47 an. 1968 war er Gastprofessor für deutsche Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts an der Washington University in St. Louis (USA) und 1969 am Middlebury College (USA). Von 1971 bis 1975 lehrte er als ständiger Gastprofessor für Neue Deutsche Literatur an den Universitäten Stockholm und Uppsala. Ab 1974 war er Honorarprofessor an der Universität Tübingen, in den Jahren 1991/92 bekleidete er die Heinrich Heine-Gastprofessur an der Universität Düsseldorf. Marcel Reich-Ranicki war Ehrendoktor der Universitäten Uppsala (1972), Augsburg (1992), Bamberg (1992), Düsseldorf (1997), Utrecht (2001) und München (2002). Nachdem er 1988 die Leitung des Literaturteils der FAZ abgegeben hatte, schrieb er weiter Kritiken in verschiedenen Zeitungen und wirkte von nun an auch im Fernsehen: Von 1988 bis 2001 leitete er das Literarische Quartett im ZDF. Reich-Ranicki wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen geehrt und galt als einer der bedeutendsten Literaturkritiker Deutschlands. Er starb am 18. September 2013 im Alter von 93 Jahren.
Over the course of a career spanning five decades, Jane Taylor has shown a commitment to the rehabilitation of the more neglected aspects of later medieval French literature. This volume brings together original contributions from scholars who have worked alongside Taylor and directly or indirectly benefitted from her example. The chapters demonstrate their authors' link to this legacy, and concomitantly underline the vibrancy and breadth of approach which is the hallmark of current later medieval studies. The essays in the collection centre on a number of key issues in the field: notions of literary self-consciousness and what it means to come after an avatar; issues of intertextuality and the appeal to past models in the creation of a new literary aesthetic (or a new literary criticism); and interdisciplinary questions of translation, reworking, and continuation. Essays in later medieval French literature seeks not only to illustrate the buoyant state of later medieval French literary studies but also, in so doing, to show how in broader terms responding to the legacy of an illustrious predecessor has not pejorative but positive consequences. ;
Crafting design in Italy is the first book to examine the role that craft played in post-war Italian design, one of the most celebrated design episodes in the twentieth century. Craft was vital to the development of Italian design, and it has been so far overlooked. This book examines the multiple ways craft shaped Italian design from 1945 to the 1980s in the context of bigger socio-economic, cultural and political change; from post-war reconstruction to the economic 'miracle' of the 1960s, to the rise of the countercultural Radical Design movement and advent of postmodernism. It consists of case studies on design areas including product, furniture, fashion, glass and ceramics to bring to light previously unknown makers and objects as well as re-examine design 'icons' such as Gio Ponti's Superleggera chair and Ettore Sottsass's Memphisware. It also offers a model for analysing design and craft's relationship in other contexts, including today. ;
