        Fifth Disease

        by Donald Emmeluth, Ed.D.

Most people have never heard of fifth disease, yet, based on the presence of antibodies in the blood, 50 to 60 percent of all adults had the disease as children. Part of a group of six childhood diseases, fifth disease is caused by the human parvovirus B19, which belongs to the Parvoviridae virus family. For most patients, the first symptoms of the disease are mild and may include a fever, muscle aches, headaches, and lethargy. After about a week, a red rash develops on the cheeks, giving the appearance of someone who has been slapped on both cheeks. Usually a red or pink rash then spreads to the rest of the body before it fades away within five or six weeks. Fifth Disease describes the history, diagnosis, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of fifth disease, and the latest research. Chapters include: Introduction to Fifth Disease What Are Fifth Disease and Other Viruses Diagnostic Methods for Fifth Disease Fifth Disease Diagnosis and Symptoms Treatment for Fifth Disease Viral Replication and Fifth Disease Past and Future Concerns of Fifth Disease

Practical Control of Mosquitoes as Disease Vectors

by Jacques Derek Charlwood, Carla A Sousa, Perran Ross, Marta Maia, Gabriel Carrasco-Escobar, Amir Galili, Lucy Tusting, Annold Mbando, Kevin Kobylinski, Carlos Chaccour, Jan E. Conn, Manuela Herrera-Varela, Robert T. Jones, Emmanuel Kaindoa, Kimberly Fornace, Edgar Manrique, Louisa A. Messenger, Meir Morag, Marta Moreno, Fredros Okumu, Joao Pinto

Disease vector control is rapidly changing, both because of the emergence of resistance to conventional methods and the development of new and potentially game-changing techniques. This book reviews several current and future measures for controlling mosquito vectors of disease, with an emphasis on malaria vectors. Beginning with an introduction to the topic of mosquito ecology and sampling methods, the book then covers several vector-borne disease control methods. The emphasis in many of these methods is for the sufferers of the diseases to take charge of their monitoring and control. Tackling the problems facing mosquito control, the authors review the important issues of education, economic considerations and climate change before concluding with a consideration of the politics and practicalities of method choice and implementation. This book is a thought-provoking concise and practical resource for anyone interested in primary healthcare and tackling or studying mosquito disease vectors.

        Lyme Disease, Third Edition

by Len Yannielli and Alan Hecht, D.C.

Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium carried by ticks. Early Lyme disease symptoms are flu-like, including fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, and neck and back pain. A red, bullseye rash can also occur. After the bacteria spreads through the body, additional symptoms may include joint and muscle pain, and meningitis, Bell's palsy, and nervous system involvement may arise. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated with a course of antibiotics, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and prevention includes using insect repellant and removing ticks promptly from skin and clothing. This updated edition of Lyme Disease covers the latest research about the disease, its treatment, and its effects on the human body. Chapters include: An Introduction to Lyme Disease The History of Lyme Disease The Lyme Disease Bacteria Ticks and Lyme Disease Ecology and Lyme Disease Lyme Disease Epidemiology The Tests and Treatments for Lyme Disease The Lyme Vaccine.

        Lyme Disease

        An Evidence-based Approach

        by John J Halperin

This new edition of Lyme Disease provides up-to-date evidence-based research and covers the significant advances in our understanding of the disorders referred to as Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis. This book explores the causative organism, its requisite ecosystem, disease epidemiology, host-Borrelia interactions, diagnostic testing, clinical manifestations, therapeutic options, the role of host immunity on pathogenesis and long term prognosis. The authors provide balanced perspectives on all aspects of Lyme disease and explicitly review both the basic biology of the infection and practical clinical aspects. This new edition: Includes new borrelial pathogens that have been identified (B. miyamotoi, B. mayonii and B. bavariensis among others). Provides updated information on the molecular biology of the organism, neuroborreliosis, and the role of the C6 peptide in diagnosis. Discusses the controversies about 'chronic Lyme disease', post Lyme disease syndrome and other ongoing but non-specific symptoms that have been attributed to this infection. As the endemic footprint of Lyme disease continues to grow, this book provides a broad and detailed guide for clinicians and researchers involved with the diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Covering biology, epidemiology and therapeutics, it is also essential reading for students of global health and infectious disease.

        Disease-related Malnutrition

        An Evidence-based Approach to Treatment

by Rebecca J Stratton, Ceri J Green, Marinos Elia

Disease-related malnutrition is a global public health problem. The consequences of disease-related malnutrition are numerous, and include shorter survival rates, lower functional capacity, longer hospital stays, greater complication rates, and higher prescription rates.Nutritional support, in the form of oral nutritional supplements or tube feeding, has proven to lead to an improvement in patient outcome. This book is unique in that it draws together the results of numerous different studies that demonstrate the benefits of nutritional support and provides an evidence base for it. It also discusses the causes, consequences, and prevalence of disease-related malnutrition, and provides insights into the best possible use of enteral nutritional support.

        Disease Resistance in Wheat

        by Edited by Indu Sharma.

Disease resistance is one of the major factors that can be improved to sustain yield potential in cultivated crops. This book looks at disease resistance in wheat, concentrating on all the economically important diseases - their economic impact and geographical spread, breeding for resistance, pathogen variability, resistance mechanisms and recent advances made on resistance genes. Newer strategies for identifying resistance genes and identify resistance mechanisms are discussed, including cloning, gene transfer and the use of genetically modified plants.
