POSTERIOR APPROACHES TO THE HIP JOINT

        by Dr. K. Mohan Iyer

There are more than 100 described approaches to the Hip Joint in literature. “Posterior Approaches to the Hip Joint” is the only up-to-date book written solely on this particular subject. It has been compiled neatly and systematically, starting with Anatomy of the Hip Joint with special emphasis to its Posterior aspect, including Ultrasound and Sports injuries. The next chapter is focused on Biomechanics of the Hip Joint with special emphasis on its Posterior aspect, including the joint reaction forces and commonly used assistive devices of Total Hip Replacement. The book also covers the patient positioning and setup using excellent demonstrations with original photographs taken for this book and not discussed in other books. The following chapters discuss in depth the various new and original modifications to the posterior approach of the hip .Including the minimally invasive and two incision approaches. The book doesn’t only explain the approaches, but it also demonstrates various repair techniques including the tranosseous repair. It even goes further to the postoperative rehabilitation particularly in relation to the posterior approach to the hip joint. Some chapter moves on to concentrate on the latest evolutions, namely Arthroscopic and robotic surgery and their role in the treatment of the Posterior compartment of the Hip.

        Injury in America

        A Continuing Public Health Problem

by Committee on Trauma Research; Institute of Medicine; National Research Council

"Injury is a public health problem whose toll is unacceptable," claims this book from the Committee on Trauma Research. Although injuries kill more Americans from 1 to 34 years old than all diseases combined, little is spent on prevention and treatment research. In addition, between $75 billion and $100 billion each year is spent on injury-related health costs. Not only does the book provide a comprehensive survey of what is known about injuries, it suggests there is a vast need to know more. Injury in America traces findings on the epidemiology of injuries, prevention of injuries, injury biomechanics and the prevention of impact injury, treatment, rehabilitation, and administration of injury research.

        Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders

Report, Workshop Summary, and Workshop Papers

by Steering Committee for the Workshop on Work-Related Musculoskeletal Injuries: The Research Base, National Research Council

Estimated costs associated with lost days and compensation claims related to musculoskeletal disorders-including back pains and repetitive motion injuries-range from $13 billion to $20 billion annually. This is a serious national problem that has spurred considerable debate about the causal links between such disorders and risk factors in the workplace. This book presents a preliminary assessment of what is known about the relationship between musculoskeletal disorders and what may cause them. It includes papers and a workshop summary of findings from orthopedic surgery, public health, occupational medicine, epidemiology, risk analysis, ergonomics, and human factors. Topics covered include the biological responses of tissues to stress, the biomechanics of work stressors, the epidemiology of physical work factors, and the contributions of individual, recreational, and social factors to such disorders. The book also considers the relative success of various workplace interventions for prevention and rehabilitation.

        Babylon Twins

        by M.F. Gibson

“A gleefully apocalyptic page-turner . . .” —Kirkus Reviews Meet Chloe and Elizabeth Yetti: antisocial, semi-homicidal eighteen-year-old twins casually surviving the AI apocalypse. Ten years ago, a powerful machine intelligence unleashed a nanoengineered superdrug on humanity. Civilization is now a collection of mindless addicts confined to automated treatment centers that tower over drone-dominated cityscapes. Having escaped and grown up in the forests of Northern California alongside their younger brother and brilliant scientist/survivalist mother, Clo and El stayed safe while society collapsed around them. But when a mysterious stranger and a demonic woodland creature appear and threaten their family, the twins are drawn back to a disintegrating, drug-addled San Francisco. There, biomechanical gods and monsters vie for control of what’s left of humanity’s consciousness. Armed with only a knife, an old hunting rifle, and their secret, cryptophasic twin language, Clo and El realize that surviving the apocalypse was just the beginning—now they’ve got to face it head-on. The first book in the Babylon Twins trilogy, this epic adventure takes readers on a journey filled with sci-fi spectacle and darkly humorous twists and turns, not to mention some good old-fashioned butt-kicking. The second book in the series will be coming out in 2022.

        Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace

        Low Back and Upper Extremities

by Panel on Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace, Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, National Research Council

Every year workers' low-back, hand, and arm problems lead to time away from jobs and reduce the nation's economic productivity. The connection of these problems to workplace activities-from carrying boxes to lifting patients to pounding computer keyboards-is the subject of major disagreements among workers, employers, advocacy groups, and researchers. Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace examines the scientific basis for connecting musculoskeletal disorders with the workplace, considering people, job tasks, and work environments. A multidisciplinary panel draws conclusions about the likelihood of causal links and the effectiveness of various intervention strategies. The panel also offers recommendations for what actions can be considered on the basis of current information and for closing information gaps. This book presents the latest information on the prevalence, incidence, and costs of musculoskeletal disorders and identifies factors that influence injury reporting. It reviews the broad scope of evidence: epidemiological studies of physical and psychosocial variables, basic biology, biomechanics, and physical and behavioral responses to stress. Given the magnitude of the problem-approximately 1 million people miss some work each year-and the current trends in workplace practices, this volume will be a must for advocates for workplace health, policy makers, employers, employees, medical professionals, engineers, lawyers, and labor officials.

        Rheumatology

        A Clinical Handbook

        by Ahmad Al-Sukaini|Mohsin Azam|Ash Samanta

Rheumatology: A clinical handbook is an essential resource for medical students who need an introduction, understanding and overview of the subject. Most competing texts either burden medical students with information they do not require, or cover rheumatology alongside orthopaedics and as a result compromise fundamentals of rheumatology. This book is different – it provides all the information students need during their rheumatology placement and signposts them to where they can find further information. A definition and brief pathophysiology for each condition is provided, which is linked to the respective clinical features. The book covers the core elements of diagnosis and treatment based on the latest national guidelines to swiftly bring students and junior doctors in training up-to-date. Self-assessment questions and an OSCE chapter provide a way of checking that users have understood and grasped the core material, as well as enabling students to be well equipped for their written and OSCE examinations. Written by two medical students and an experienced consultant rheumatologist, the book combines a reader-friendly writing style with coverage of the material through clinical experience of a professional in the field. Printed in full colour throughout, with an attractive design, a clear and concise writing style as well as a range of pedagogical features including an array of mnemonics, pictures and diagrams, Rheumatology: A clinical handbook is exactly the sort of book medical students and newly qualified doctors would benefit from.

        Corriger le pied (nouvelle édition)

        sans semelle

        by Frédéric Brigaud

Correcting Feet without the Use of Insoles Pronating flat feet and supinating arched feet are no longer inevitable as we once believed: They are essentially the result of “incorrect posture” and can be rectified. This book shines a new light on the way feet work and takes us past the commonly accepted and erroneous idea that the foot is a block and that pronating or supinating feet can only be corrected by wearing corrective insoles or shoes. On the contrary, the foot’s shape can change instantaneously; it can arch, flatten out, become long or even shorten thanks to its articulating joint space and the heel that can move several centimetres sideways, independent of the supporting forefoot.   A correctly functioning foot assures a proper junction with the ground and optimises taking a step. It also helps maintain the ankle and is instrumental in preventing sprains. Moreover, it increases recovery in case of losing one’s balance and enables one to develop more dynamic support. The new edition of this book refines testing and corrective protocols from the previous edition, which is now out-of-print, includes new information and develops elements from the presently unavailable Competitive Running book, specifically related to the biomechanics of the foot. The goal of this book is therefore to provide a means to: — View the way the foot functions in a new light, in order to regain control; — Correct pronating and supinating feet without insoles or special shoes; — Stabilise the ankle and step-taking, and thereby prevent sprains; — Develop the foot’s flexibility; — Reinforce the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the foot; — Develop the dynamics of correctly functioning feet; — Understand the interest of going barefoot to help the feet develop foot muscles and maintain flexibility; — Understand the foot in order to better choose shoes; — Produce and maintain more efficient and correct support and step-taking both daily, and when playing sports.
