Nutrition and Feeding of Organic Poultry

        by Robert Blair

Organic poultry production has increased significantly in recent years to keep up with increasing consumer demand for organic eggs and meat. There are many guidelines and restrictions on what should go into the feed of organically-farmed poultry, from which difficulties arise when trying to ensure a well-balanced nutritious diet without the use of any unapproved supplements. This, the second edition of Robert Blair's classic and bestselling book on the nutrition and feeding of organic poultry, presents advice for organic producers, and the agencies and organizations serving them. It covers: - Selecting suitable ingredients. - Preparing appropriate feed mixtures and integrating them into organic poultry production systems. - International standards for organic feeding. - Breeds that are most suitable for organic farming. - Examples of diets formulated to organic standards. Completely updated and revised to address how to formulate organic diets in situations where there is a declining supply of organic feed, this new edition also includes up-to-date information on the nutritional requirements of poultry and feed-related disease incidence in organic flocks. Also including the feasibility of utilizing novel feed, such as insect meal, and their acceptability by consumers of organic meat products, this book forms a comprehensive reference for students, organic farmers, veterinarians and researchers.

        Small Animal Veterinary Psychiatry

        by Sagi Denenberg, Ali Thompson

Problem behaviours are often the result of how an animal thinks and feels, genetics, and environmental influences. Steering away from just description diagnoses and focusing instead on emotional and cognitive causes, this book provides a practical approach to diagnosing, treating, and managing behaviour pathologies in dogs and cats. Beginning by addressing cases in the first opinion practice, this book then considers physical disorders that may lead to or exacerbate abnormal behavior. From there, the focus shifts to mental and emotional health, from an assessment of normal behavior and giving juveniles an optimal start in life, to diagnosing mental and emotional disorders, addressing emotions such as anxiety and frustration, and how to manage these issues - by modifying behavior, managing the animal's environment, training, and, when necessary, the use of medications. The second half of the book then addresses owner concerns, including management problems, aggression, affective disorder, elimination disorder, abnormal and repetitive behaviours and ageing-related problems. With an emphasis on helping first line veterinarians identify common presentations and offer help to owners, this book: - Addresses both normal and abnormal behaviour in cats and dogs from an emotion and cognition perspective; - Provides behaviour modification protocols, and drug doses and indications; - Includes handouts to be used both within the practice and with clients to help the veterinary surgeon manage the case. Written by international experts, the book translates their insights and experience into approaches taken in behavioural medicine. Also including the most up-to-date drugs, it is an important resource for both small animal veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine or animal behaviour.

      • THE SMELL OF THE SEA

        SMALL WALKS ALONG MEDITERRANEAN SHORES

        by FABIO FIORI

Those who love the sea want to hear its voice and see its colours. But they also want to touch it, smell it and,  sometimes, taste a little salt water. Walking along the shoreline, perhaps barefoot, offers all the pleasures of the sea, especially in autumn, winter or spring, even in the wind and rain, or in summer at dawn or dusk in the noise and silence of the waves. Moments when the relationship with the Mediterranean is passionate and sensual, when the attraction for water becomes irresistible. The journey is interrupted for a dip or a swim, and then resumed with the smell of salt. Strolling along the shores is a simple and free way of 'sailing', but also of claiming the gratuitousness of the sea, in Marseilles as in Palermo, on the island of Ithaca as on the Gargano promontory. That is why the walk along the beaches and cliffs is today also a form of civil disobedience, a libertarian practice, to reclaim the joys of our daily sea.

      • Ouchieee

by Author: Elif Seyrekbasan Illustrator: Nesibe Çelebi

The author draws attention to the effect of empowering the child when coping with difficult issues, and doing this by getting support from the child’s own life and “successes.”   Cansu is in the emergency service at the hospital with her family. As the nurse approaches with a needle in her hand to take blood from her, Cansu starts shouting: “Ouchieee”. The other children in the hospital are nervous: “What are they doing to make this child shout so fiercely?” However, the tip of the needle has not even touched Cansu, but she screams out of breath: Ouchieee! And at the end of these shouts—maybe we should say calls—a girl appears at the speed of a jet and says, “Here I am with your call.” Cansu is confused. She is sure that she did not call anyone. Where did this girl come from? That moment is the meeting of Ouchie and Cansu. Ouchie is there to help her get through this “difficult” process in the hospital. Meet our pratogonists, who will add color to children’s rich imaginations and encourage them to deal with their fears.

        Peace Initiatives in Colombia

        by Virginia M. Bouvier

Nearly half-a-century old, the Colombian conflict has spawned a long tradition of peace initiatives that offer innovative alternatives to violence. Peace Initiatives in Colombia, a conference sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace and the Latin American Studies Program at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, November 19–20, 2005, analyzed these initiatives from various perspectives and identified the variables and strategies relevant to their success. The conference brought together contributors to a book on Colombian peace initiatives being edited by Virginia M. Bouvier, a Latin American specialist and senior program officer of the Jennings Randolph Program at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Conference speakers included some twenty individuals from a broad range of academic fields, as well as human rights and development specialists, photographers, and political and military analysts from Colombia, the United States, and Europe. A list of conference participants, about half of whom are current or former USIP grantees or peace scholars, is at the end of this report. The conference was organized by Dr. Bouvier and Dr. Mary Roldán. Additional sponsors included Cornell’s Africana Studies and Research Center; its departments of development sociology, government, history, and anthropology; the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies; the Institute for European Studies; the Johnson School of Management; the Peace Studies Program; the Society for the Humanities; the Committee on U.S.–Latin American Relations (CUSLAR); and the Colombian Student Association, as well as Syracuse University ’s Program for Analysis and Resolution of Conflict (PARC). This report is based primarily on presentations and papers prepared for the conference, and participants have reviewed it.

        What Would the Pope Say?

        by Jaime Larrain

Pope Francis is at a crossroads. The Catholic Church, still reeling from the cases of child abuse and the corruption scandals of the Vatican Bank, has an opportunity for redemption or for a final nail in the coffin, after the Pope’s closes advisor, Cardinal Bullbridge, is kidnapped. While the Pope ponders the destiny of the Church, Aum, the leader of the Chrysallis Team that in 2016 kidnapped business moghul Brian Feller, has set for himself the tremendous challenge of gathering the most important religious leaders of the world so they can witness The Experiment, a mysterious process that could breathe new life into the Catholic Faith. The Experiment was born in the island of Ithaca in 2010, thanks to the work of Aum and Father Thomas, the guardian of the Vatican´s secret files. The motivations of Aum and Thomas are not merely academic, there’s a much larger political agenda at play. Being 86 years of age, and with a very sick son, Aum rolls the dice and brings together the Dalai Lama, Pope Francis, historian Yuval Harari, philosopher Michael Onfray, and many others. But Cardinal Bullbridge wants to put an end to his, which he sees as a threat to the Papacy. And Commissioner Scorza, Vatican Chief of Security, is trying to solve the riddle while also dealing with some scandals of his own making. What Would the Pope Say? Is not just a history of the Vatican, it is the history of an ancient dream that can now become reality, a dream we all carry inside: a spirituality that goes beyond religions, and that is one and universal.

The Case for International Sharing of Scientific Data

A Focus on Developing Countries: Proceedings of a Symposium

by Kathie Bailey Mathae and Paul F. Uhlir, Editors; Committee on the Case of International Sharing of Scientific Data: A Focus on Developing Countries; Board on International Scientific Organizations; Board on Research Data and Information; Policy and Global Affairs; National Research Council

The theme of this international symposium is the promotion of greater sharing of scientific data for the benefit of research and broader development, particularly in the developing world. This is an extraordinarily important topic. Indeed, I have devoted much of my own career to matters related to the concept of openness. I had the opportunity to promote and help build the open courseware program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This program has made the teaching materials for all 2,000 subjects taught at MIT available on the Web for anyone, anywhere, to use anytime at no cost. In countries where basic broadband was not available, we shipped it in on hard drives and compact disks. Its impact has been worldwide, but it has surely had the greatest impact on the developing world. I am also a trustee of a nonprofit organization named Ithaca that operates Journal Storage (JSTOR) and other entities that make scholarly information available at very low cost. The culture of science has been international and open for centuries. Indeed, the scientific enterprise can only work when all information is open and accessible, because science works through critical analysis and replication of results. In recent years, as some scientific data, and especially technological data, have increased in economic value frequently has caused us to be far less open with information than business and free enterprise require us to be. Indeed, the worldwide shift to what is known as open innovation is strengthening every day. Finally, since the end of World War II, the realities of modern military conflict and now terrorism have led governments to restrict information through classification. This is important, but I believe that we classify far too much information. The last thing we need today, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, is further arbitrary limitations on the free flow of scientific information, whether by policies established by governments and businesses, or by lack of information infrastructure. For all these reasons, the international sharing of scientific data is one of the topics of great interest here at the National Academies and has been the subject of many of our past reports. This is the primary reason why this symposium has been co-organized by the NRC's Policy and Global Affairs Division-the Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) and the Board on Research Data and Information (BRDI). The Case for International Sharing of Scientific Data: A Focus on Developing Countries: Proceedings of a Symposium summarizes the symposium.

        Democratizing the Bretton Woods Institutions.

        Problems and Tentative Solutions

        by Susanna Cafaro

This e-book is the synthesis of years of research and direct observation of the work of the Bretton Woods institutions. It is also the result of many exchanges of views with actors and observers, IMF and World Bank executive directors, civil society representatives, colleagues professors. The interests  at stake are: how to make the Bretton Woods institutions (i) more effective, so that they can successfully face the challenges of development gaps (World Bank) and crisis prevention and management (IMF) and (ii) more democratic and less opaque, so that all their members and stakeholders can have a voice in and be represented, be they large or small, wealthy or not. The two organizations are examined simultaneously, because of the perfect symmetry in their governance structures, of their links (shared memberships, contextual agreements), and of the complementarity of their missions. The focus is on  their governance systems and above all on their decision-making process. The analysis is based on the firm belief that the decision-making process affects the efficiency and also – indirectly – the outcome of the international organizations’ decisions. In other words, their governance systems are bound to influence and shape the results of the actions of the international organizations themselves. The book describes the governance of the Bretton Woods institutions – the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank – from a legal-institutional point of view and looks for ways in which they could be changed in order to meet today's global democracy needs. Its main focus is on the decision-making process as it affects the outcome of the international organizations’ activity. As a consequence of the 2008 global financial crisis, wisemen and committees of experts were asked to analyze the flaws and weaknesses of global financial institutions. Their reports, along with papers by think tanks, scholars and civil society representatives, proposed actions and reforms. Systematizing and commenting those hints, a fact crops out: in spite of their seeming diversity, all recommended reforms are marked by significant affinities, evidencing an underlying sharing of the criticalities to be addressed and corrected. The book examines suggestions for global economic governance reform in a plain and accessible language as a contribution to a necessary debate, which can't be confined to elite meetings and expert talks but has to involve all global citizens.
