        Michael Winterbottom

        by Brian McFarlane, Deane Williams, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        This is the first book-length study of the most prolific and most critically acclaimed director working in British cinema today. Michael Winterbottom has also established himself, and his company, Revolution Films, as a dynamic force in world cinema. No other British director can claim such an impressive body of work in such a variety of genres, from road movie to literary adaptation, from musical to sex film, to stories of contemporary political significance. The authors of this book use a range of critical approaches to analyse the filmmaker's eclectic interests in cinema and the world at large. With this in mind, the realist elements of such films as Welcome to Sarajevo are examined in the light of a long history of cinema's dealings with realism, as far back as post-war Italian neo-realist filmmaking; whereas Jude and The claim are approached as both literary adaptations (a continuing strand in British cinema history) and examples of other reworked genres (the road movie, the western). This lively study of his work, written in a wholly accessible style, will engage all those who have followed his career as well as those with a wide-ranging interest in British cinema.

        Gothic television

        by Helen Wheatley

        Gothic television is the first full length study of the Gothic released on British and US television. An historical account, the book combines detailed archival research with analyses of key programmes, from Mystery and Imagination and Dark Shadows, to The Woman in White and Twin Peaks, and uncovers an aspect of television drama history which has, until now, remained critically unexplored. While some have seen television as too literal or homely a medium to successfully present Gothic fictions, Gothic television argues that the genre, in its many guises, is, and has always been, well-suited to television as a domestic medium, given the genre's obsessions with haunted houses and troubled families. This book will be of interest to lecturers and students across a number of disciplines including television studies, Gothic studies, and adaptation studies, as well as to the general reader with an interest in the Gothic, and in the history of television drama.

        Popular television drama

        Critical perspectives

        by Jonathan Bignell, Stephen Lacey

        Popular television drama: critical perspectives' is a collection of essays examining landmark programmes of the last forty years, from 'Doctor Who' to 'The Office', and from 'The Demon Headmaster' to 'Queer As Folk'. Contributions from prominent academics focus on the full range of popular genres, from sitcoms to science fiction, gothic horror and children's drama, and challenge received wisdom by reconsidering how British television drama can be analysed. Each section is preceded by an introduction in which the editors discuss how the essays address existing problems in the field and also suggest new directions for study. The book is split into three sections, addressing the enduring appeal of popular genres, the notion of 'quality' in television drama, and analysing a range of programmes past and present. Popular television drama: critical perspectives will be of interest to students and researchers in many academic disciplines that study television drama. Its breadth and focus on popular programmes will also appeal to those interested in the shows themselves.

        Republican passions

        Family, friendship and politics in nineteenth-century France

        by Susan K. Foley

        Republican passions demonstrates the crucial role of family and friendship networks in the creation of the French Third Republic. Based on the family archives of Léon Laurent-Pichat, journalist, Deputy and Life Senator, this study paints a rich picture of republican intimacy, sociability and political activity during the Second Empire and early Third Republic. It explores republican friendships and family connections as men and women worked together for the cause. In republican circles, as the book illustrates, the intimate and political realms were not separate but deeply intertwined and interdependent.

        Yellow River

        Image Files of the Natural and Humanistic Heritages of China’s River Sources, III

        by Ge Jianxiong, Zheng Yunfeng

        In Chinese history, the Yellow River is much more than a river; it stands for the origins of Chinese civilization and is often referred to as "The Mother River". Image Files of the Natural and Humanistic Heritages of China's River Sources: Yellow River systematically records the nature, history, and humanity in the Yellow River Basin from the perspective of "visual anthropology". It contains a large number of precious photos taken in the 1980s, not only showing the originality, diversity, and uniqueness of the Yellow River culture but also strengthening the environmental protection awareness, which is considered of high cultural and historical value.   The series has three volumes: Memories of Mountains and Rivers, Memories of Old Days, and Memories of Ours. Memories of Mountains and Rivers records in images the geological features of the Yellow River from the source towards the sea and reveals the natural magnificence of the Yellow River. Memories of Old Days tells the rise and fall of Chinese history in the Yellow River Basin throughout thousands of years, from the primitive society to the feudal dynasties, from cultural relics underground to above-ground. Memories of Ours records the residence, grazing, farming, clothing, and sacrifice of the Chinese nation in the Yellow River Basin and reveals the cultural prosperity of the Yellow River Civilization.

        New challenges for documentary

        Second edition

        by Alan Rosenthal, John Corner, Martin Hargreaves

        The first edition of New challenges for documentary provided a major stimulus for teaching about documentary film and television and fresh encouragement for critical thinking about practice. This second edition brings together many new contributions both from academics and filmmakers, reflecting shifts both in documentary production itself, and in ways of discussing it. Once again, the emphasis has been on clear and provocative writing, sympathetic to the practical challenges of documentary film-making but making connections with a range of work in media and communications analysis. With its wide range of contributors and the international scope of its agenda, New challenges for documentary will be essential reading for general filmmakers and documentary students both of academic and practical inclinations. ;

        Chang Yu animal painting

        by Chang Yu

        In the modern Chinese painting circle, Chang Yu is a leader, once alternately refreshing the Chinese oil painting auction record. Painter Chang Yu has had ups and downs throughout her life, and insists on going her own way in art. He is recognized in the West as a world-class painter, a Chinese Modigliani, a painter who creates freely for his artistic beliefs and makes remarkable achievements. Chang Yu turned from the most familiar Chinese art to another brand new western art field, and constantly explored and pursued on the basis of Chinese painting, finally achieving Chang Yu's special painting style of simplicity and fluency. Chang Yu is an indelible Oriental pearl. Few books of Chang Yu are published in China. We popularize such art and publicize Chang Yu's achievements in the history of Chinese art in the 20th century.The series consists of 3 books. This book is a collection of Chang Yu's animal paintings, which contains more than 60 of her important and iconic animal works. Chang Yu's animal works mostly show the vast land, the ancient roads, or the yellow sand road, and the desolate situation of people. In the painting, there is only a small animal like a drop in the ocean in the boundless empty sky. All the viewers can feel the loneliness and sorrow of this stranger in his old age.

        Public issue television

        World in Action' 1963–98

        by Peter Goddard, John Corner, Kay Richardson

        Public issue television is a major contribution to understanding the relationship between television, politics and society. Based on full access to the archives, it offers a fascinating historical account of how one television series, Granada's World in Action, celebrated for its tough journalism, visual directness and public impact, functioned and developed over its run across 35 years between 1963 and 1998. In a succession of chapters looking at different periods in the series' development and at key dimensions of its distinctive identity, it gets deep inside the making of factual television and examines how a particular culture of production works within broader conditions of possibility and constraint. In particular, it charts the interwoven processes of change - technological, professional, aesthetic, institutional, economic, social and political. As well as discussing achievement and success, it examines the tensions, the debates and open conflicts that formed part of the context within which the series was made and transmitted across four decades. ;

        Don Juan oder Die Liebe zur Geometrie

        Eine Komödie in fünf Akten

        by Max Frisch

        Max Frisch im Nachwort: »Don Juan ist ein Intellektueller wenn auch von gutem Wuchs und ohne alles Brillenhafte. Was ihn unwiderstehlich macht für die Damen von Sevilla ist durchaus seine Geistigkeit, sein Anspruch auf eine männliche Geistigkeit, die ein Affront ist, indem sie ganz andere Ziele kennt als die Frau und die Frau von vornherein al Episode einsetzt - mit dem bekannten Ergebnis freilich, daß die Episode schließlich sein ganzes Leben verschlingt.«

        Arno Schmidts Wundertüte

        Eine Sammlung fiktiver Briefe aus den Jahren 1948/49

        by Arno Schmidt, Bernd Rauschenbach, Bernd Rauschenbach

        »Und versuchen Sie bitte nicht, meine Bekanntschaft zu machen; ich würde Sie äußerlich und auch im Auftreten enttäuschen; das Beste, was ich bin und habe, gebe ich Ihnen ohnedies ... in meinen Büchern.« Mit dieser Mahnung an den Leser beginnt Arno Schmidt seine Sammlung fiktiver Briefe, unter denen der furioseste sich an den unglücklichen Verfasser einer mißratenenen übersetzung von Poes Der Untergang des Hauses Usher richtet, der zarteste und dankbarste Johann Gottfried Schnabel, dem Autor der Insel Felsenburg, zugedacht ist und von der Erzählung Die Fremden gekrönt wird – und der knappste geht Klopstock zu, mit den lakonisch vernichtenden Worten: »Sehr geehrter Herr! Anbei den Messias zurück.Ihr Arno Schmidt.«Entstanden in den Jahren 1948 und 1949, erschien Arno Schmidts »zweites Buch« nach dem Leviathan erst 40 Jahre später, als Erstveröffentlichung aus dem Nachlaß.Zum 90. Geburtstag des Autors am 18. Januar 2004 liegt im suhrkamp taschenbuch mit Arno Schmidts Wundertüte ein eigenwilliges, kurioses, überaus witziges Buch für Liebhaber seines Werks, aber auch für Einsteiger vor.

        Bargfelder Ausgabe. Briefe von und an Arno Schmidt

        Band 5: Briefwechsel mit Kollegen

        by Arno Schmidt, Gregor Strick

        Arno Schmidt bemerkte einmal, er sei ein "fauler" Briefschreiber: "meine näheren Bekannten – denn ich habe deren tatsächlich – wissen das, & harren in Geduld. (Und der schönste ‹Brief›, den ein Autor versenden kann, ist & bleibt ja doch wohl das ‹Neue Buch›. –)" Diese Selbsteinschätzung paßt zwar zu dem öffentlichen Vorurteil über den "Solipsist in der Heide", ist aber nur die halbe Wahrheit, wie der vierte Band der Arno-Schmidt-Briefausgabe beweist. Die komplett dargebotenen Korrespondenzen Schmidts mit Böll, Deschner, Döblin, Edschmid, Hesse, Jahnn, Kreuder, Rühmkorf, Stefl, Steinberg und Martin Walser (nebst einer Fülle von Einzelbriefen) zeigen Schmidt als einen Autor, der aus einer selbstgewählten Randposition sehr wohl die Mechanismen des Literaturbetriebs auf seine Weise zu bedienen wußte. Der ausführliche Kommentar des Kölner Literaturwissenschaftlers Gregor Strick macht den Band zu einem Kompendium bundesrepublikanischer Literaturgeschichte, das weit über den Kreis der Schmidt-Leser hinaus Beachtung finden wird.

        Entertaining television

        The BBC and popular television culture in the 1950s

        by Su Holmes

        Entertaining television challenges the idea that the BBC in the 1950s was elitist and 'staid', upholding Reithian values in a paternalistic, even patronising way. By focusing on a number of (often controversial) programme case studies - such as the soap opera, the quiz/ game show, the 'problem' show and programmes dealing with celebrity culture - Su Holmes demonstrates how BBC television surprisingly explored popular interests and desires. She also uncovers a number of remarkable connections with programmes and topics at the forefront of television today, ranging from talk shows, 'Reality TV', even to our contemporary obsession with celebrity. The book is iconclastic, percipient and grounded in archival research, and will be of use to anyone studying television history. ;

        The Dragon Lantern

        China Story Picture Books

        by Yi Ping

        China Story Picture Books is the first set of children's picture books launched by the Bingxin Award Committee. This set of books covers the works of seven Bingxin Award-winning writers of different ages including children's literature masters and promising young writers. The illustrations are full of traditional Chinese cultural elements such as dragon lantern dance, paper cutting, oil paper umbrella, and bamboo. Powerful painters at home and abroad are invited to do illustrations, which brings interesting fusion and collision of Chinese and foreign cultures to the books. In addition to the original illustrations, the stories are more touching. Every child can harvest the courage and wisdom for growing up from these stories.   The series consists of 7 picture books: The Dragon Lantern, The Path of Golden Flowers, The Child in Three-Story Attic, The School Day Gifts, The Secret of Crossing, The Slope of Sisters.   The Dragon Lantern tells a folk story of the Spring Festival. Yuanyuan and Fangfang are twins, and they have a common wish: to have a big lantern on the day of the Spring Festival. When the new year comes, the dragon in the dragon lantern jumps into the sky and turns into a fire dragon with colorful lights. He takes the God of Fortune, the Door God, the Kitchen God and the Lord Rabbit for a walk in the sky, laughs, and brings everyone the blessings of the festival.

        Leviathan oder Die Beste der Welten. Gadir oder Erkenne dich selbst. Enthymesis oder W.I.E.H..

        Erzählungen

        by Arno Schmidt

        Arno Schmidts Debüt erregte 1949 Aufsehen: Mit großer Sprachmacht präsentiert sich ein unbekannter Autor, der sich nicht scheut, über den Krieg zu schreiben. In der Titelerzählung Leviathan treiben die letzten Kriegstage eine Schar Verlorener in einem Güterwaggon zusammen. Die einen glauben noch an einen rettenden Gott, die anderen an die Fügung des Schicksals. Die Flucht vor der Front endet aussichtslos auf einer zerstörten Brücke. Die verzweifelten Versuche, aus der bösartigen Welt der Menschen zu entkommen, prägen auch die beiden anderen Stücke des Bandes, Gadir und Enthymesis. Der eine träumt sich aus dem Gefängnis, der andere imaginiert die Welt als eine grenzenlose Fläche - doch welcher Weg, wenn nicht der über Selbsterkenntnis, führt tatsächlich in die Freiheit?
