        Abschied von Europa

        by Paul Nizon

        Ernst Haeckel

        Zoologist, artist, philosopher and freethinker

        by Rainer Willmann

Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) is one of the most famous and influential researchers of all times. This brilliant biography by Rainer Willmann recounts Haeckel's fascinating life for science and his fight for freedom of thought. Haeckel is a vehement advocate of Darwinian doctrine and develops it further, which is why he is fiercely attacked not only by the church but also by his fellow scientists. Among other things, we owe to Haeckel the freedom of research and teaching that we take so much for granted. That he was also a talented artist is proven by his drawings of marine organisms ... The gripping and highly interesting life story of an extraordinary freethinker and scientist.

      • RENDANG

        Minang Legacy to the World

        by Reno Andam Suri

Reno Andam Suri began her rendang-production business, Rendang Uni Farah, in 2004. She dreamed of promoting rendang to a wider audience by introducing vacuum-packed rendang suitable for air travel. She did not stop there, however. In 2012 she started a blog, Rendang Traveler, to share stories about rendang, the proud dish from her homeland, West Sumatra. To write this book, she returned to West Sumatra, and discovered the rich philosophical and cultural values of rendang, affirming her view that it is indeed a national treasure worth sharing with the world. Reno has become the media go-to source for rendang. At her Baralek Rendang (rendang festival) she introduced rendang to an appreciative public through cooking demonstrations, engaging stories, and interesting games. Reno has appeared in many discussions about West Sumatran cuisine and has conducted various cooking workshops and training sessions. She is also involved in many educational communities such as Indonesia Mengajar and Kelas Inspirasi. Today, she organizes educational trips or travel programs to West Sumatra, which highlights the region’s rich culture and culinary delights. She invites participants to become better acquainted with the daily lives of West Sumatrans. She dreams of promoting rendang to an even wider audience, not just as a delectable dish, but also for the wealth of amazing stories behind it, as part of an enduring culture. Thoroughly researched but written casually, RENDANG Minang Legacy to the World boasts also the beautiful presentation of the dishes as well as the landscape of West Sumatra. It ultimately lays the groundwork about the origins of rendang and its philosophical approach, but it also explains that ultimately there are so many other varieties other than the one we usually have in Padang restaurants. The book content gained good recognition from Gourmand Prize Award in 2012 in Beijing.

      • IN THE TIME OF YELLOW BUTTERFLIES

        by Vanni Puccioni

Nias Island, (Sumatra) 1856-1861. The Southern region of Nias island keeps on resisting the Dutch colonizers with its fearsome warriors. After being repeatedly defeated in the thick jungle, the Dutch mount a strong naval expedition, with the objective of building a fort in the bay of Lagundri. Bawo Mataluo is the strongest village in the region and its chief succeeds in rallying the other villages to form an army of a thousand warriors, able to crush the invaders. But mysteriously, they will not attack… But after five years the fort is destroyed by a tsunami, and the Dutch finally withdraw. (the above are actual historical facts). What happened in between these events? The story winds in the village of Bawo Mataluo, through the characters of Tuha, an old and wise witchdoctor, his rampant and evil competitor Galifa, village chiefs, a South African missionary, an evil archbishop, Dutch soldiers, and sea captains. At the turning point of the story are three episodes of man-hunting, each duel being fought through a sense: sight, scent, and hearing are the weapons to find the opponent in the thick jungle. We read of passionate love between Tuha and his wife Sumia, and between his niece Mohua and her brave but unlucky suitor. We read of mortal disease and revenge, of war, of cowardice, of treason and bravery. And we read of divine justice, delivered through the ocean.

      • Land of Warriors: The Adventure of Elio Modigliani in South Nias 1886

        by Vanni Puccioni

This beautiful area in southern Sumatra was known by European adventurers in the nineteenth century as a "wild" land, the home of heroes who did not hesitate to behead, warriors that not even the Dutch colonial government could conquer. But Elio Modigliani, a young explorer from Italy, set foot there and went in and out of one village to another and came home intact. Accompanied by four hired hunters from Java, Modigliani not only succeeded in documenting various aspects of Nias life and culture, but also secretly brought home 26 human skulls which he donated to the National Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in Florence for their research. The big question is, why wasn't Modigliani killed, even though the other adventurers had to save themselves? Now Vanni Puccioni, the grandson of the museum director who exhibited the results of Modigliani's expedition, decided to follow in his footsteps and retrace the places the explorer had visited. The goal is one: to discover how Modigliani could survive among these warriors.

        Berani

        by Michelle Kadarusman

'Berani’, set in Indonesia, was inspired by a real-life experience and is focused on the critical plight of orangutan which are found on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, and the only Great Apes found outside Africa.    Endangered and incredibly smart, these beautiful creatures share an astounding 97% of our human DNA. In ‘Berani’ which means ‘brave’, three distinct voices are interwoven to bring the novel to its fitting and rightful finale: two youth and Ginger Juice, the species so close to humans in behaviour and intelligence that the inner voice presented in the novel is totally relatable and believable.

        Organic Spices

        by V.A.Parthasarathy, K. Kandinnan &  V. Srinivasan

The global changes warranted fastness in food production system and fast foods. In tune with demand, crop production also oriented accordingly. However, the proverb ‘Health is a Wealth is reminded us to keep vigil on system and method of food production and food safety. The ill-effect of conventional chemical based farming well documented and public realized the importance organically produced food and efforts are being made to popularize the organic production. India is a Land of Spices, each state or union territory in India cultivates one or other spice. Since spices form a part of many medicines the demand for organically produced spices is increasing considerably. Assuming a market growth of 10% in Europe, USA and Japan for organic spice products the world demand for organic spices may grow to 57000 tonnes in the next 10 yeaLarge scale use of high analysis fertilizers and pesticides result environmental hazards and imbalances in soil nutrients. Since spices are high valued and export oriented in nature it is imperative to keep the levels of pesticide residues below tolerance limits in view of the standards set by the importing countries. Hence the book on Organic Spices is timely and covers all aspects of organic spice production. The topic includes historical spice trade and importance of spices in food chain. Brief account on organic agriculture movement in the world and its present status and opportunity for organic spices in the world market are given. The chemistry and different methods of composting are included in the organic manures will be informative. Microbes play a greater role in agriculture, a separate devoted on microbes and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria would definitely enrich the reader not only that, the topics on biological control of insect pests, nematodes, fungus and bacteria of spices highlighted in separate chapters would be of interest in organic production system. The importance, composition, uses, botany and varieties, organic way of production of spices like black pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, chillies and paprika, nutmeg, vanilla, seed spices like cumin, fennel, fenugreek, coriander and their harvest and post harvest processing are enumerated. The chapters on good agricultural practices (GAP) and organic certification procedures outlined for adoption. This would serve as a reference book for researchers, teachers and students besides farmers, traders and consumers.

        The Pavilion for Small Mammals

        by Patryk Pufelski

“Noodle was one of the most important people in my life, despite weighing less than a kilogram and having four legs. I also think he was the only ferret in world history to visit every chapter of the Social and Cultural Association of Jews in Poland.” (page 17) The Pavilion for Small Mammals is the lightly fictionalised diary of contemporary Polish writer Patryk Pufelski. As a young, Jewish, openly gay zookeeper with a charming affinity for things past, his book offers answers to questions you didn’t know you had. How do you nanny a baby flamingo? Is being a vegetarian cyclist really enough to be an enemy of the Polish state? What does a friendship between a twenty-something-year-old, self-declared wannabe pensioner and an octogenarian Holocaust survivor look like?  Spanning almost a decade, Pufelski chronicles his journey from dropping out of university to landing a zookeeping job of his dreams. He shares not only laugh-out-loud, self-deprecating anecdotes from his personal and professional life, but also offers moving pictures of his family history, the present-day Jewish community in Poland, and life as a queer person under a socially conservative government. All the while, animals leap off the page, not least pet ferrets, tarantulas and Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs. With seemingly effortless literary wit and endearing sensitivity to those around him – “all of them animals, some of them humans” – Pufelski’s Pavilion seems to be an effortless lesson on how the diary form can combine the personal with the political into an entertaining, heart-warming whole.

      • Archaeology

        The Stonehenge Enigma

        by Robert John Langdon

The most sensational and controversial book in the history of archaeology has now been published, which will not only re-write the events of prehistoric Britain but moreover, the World. Our history books tell us that 12,000 years ago, the last Ice Age finally melted away to reveal the Britain we know today. OR DID IT? Britain had been under TWO MILES of ice and the seas that now surround us were frozen solid, leaving a huge mass of enormous weight pushing down on our tiny island. This mass had compressed the land so much that the surface sat some half a mile below the current sea level. SO WHAT REALLY HAPPENED AFTER THE ICE HAD MELTED? In this book Robert John Langdon explores the probability that when the ice melted, rather than leaving the land mass we now know as Britain it did, in fact, leave a collection of smaller islands and peninsulas caused by river flooding as the ground water table had risen by just 30m higher than today, creating an aquatic tropical landscape. Quite remarkably, this book shows that Stone Age Man survived the Ice Age and the great flood to go on to develop into a great maritime Civilisation – to date, this unknown society which lived in boats on the waterways and used them to construction our magnificent stone monuments, such as Stonehenge and Avebury that have lasted nearly 10,000 years. Revisiting accepted Archaeological, Geological and Topological findings Langdon has been able to write an astonishing hypothesis with compelling new proven evidence that not only re-writes our view of prehistoric Britain, but consequently, our view of the ancient world! This Lost Civilisation not only had the advanced engineering skills to build and sail boats, but moreover, was able to travel throughout Europe including the Mediterranean to trade goods. Astonishingly, their knowledge enabled them to undertake sophisticated medical procedures, such as dentistry, limb removal and even brain surgery, giving us a remarkable insight into the complexity and sophistication of their society. This book proves beyond doubt that Stone Age Men were NOT the fur clad hunter/gatherers living in mud huts as archaeologist would have you believe, but were instead members of a Great Lost Civilisation which carbon dating has proven to be responsible for the building of Stonehenge some 5,000 years earlier than currently believed.

        Fruit Breeding

        Approaches and Achievements

by Anil Kumar Shukla, Arun Kumar Shukla, M.B. Noor mohamed, Akath Singh & Divya Tiwari

The pressure of an ever-increasing population and periodic famine due to unexpected flood and drought has forced and awakened the horticultural scientist, to evolve new plant types for diversified use. Besides, some limitations in the improvement of fruit crop such as long juvenile phase, high heterozygosity, limited information on inheritance pattern, excessive fruit drop, parthenocarpy and lesser number of seeds per fruit, hybridization, selection, mutation and other tools of fruit breeding have resulted in the development of a number of varieties in mango, grape, papaya, banana and guava for various purposes. The present 2nd fully revised and enlarged edition of the much awaited book Fruit Breeding Approaches and Achievements is ventured with the objective to provide latest possible information on basic approaches in fruit breeding, breeding for biotic stresses resistance, use of plant growth regulators in fruit improvement, improvement of important fruit crops such as mango, banana, papaya, grape, guava, citrus, ber, aonla, pomegranate, date palm, litchi, coconut, cashewnut, pineapple, temperate and underutilized fruits in a broad spectrum.

        Climate Change and Agroforestry

        Adaptation, Mitigation and Livelihood Security

        by C.B.Pandey, Mahesh Kumar Gaur & R.K.Goyal

Natural change in climate is slow and takes millions of years; and it is known to have made our planet hospitable to live. The climate change is not limited to one country or a continent. It is occurring across the globe as evident from droughts in Texas and flooding along the Missouri River in the United States and along the Red River in Canada. Climate change drives many stressors and interacts with many non-climatic stressors which make it difficult to forecast outcomes in any general way other than existing threats to agriculture. Agroforestry increases a high level of diversity within agricultural lands which supports numerous ecological and production services that bring resilience to the impact of climate change mitigation and adaptation. Climate change risk management is difficult in annual cropping systems due to increasing uncertainty of inter-annual variability in rainfall and temperature. Mixing of woody trees with crops, forage and livestock operations provides greater resilience to the inter-annual variability through crop diversification and increased resource use efficiency. Deep rooted trees allow better access to nutrients and water during droughts and when appropriately integrated into annual cropping systems and extract from different resource pools that would otherwise be lost from systems. Agroforestry increases soil porosity, reduces runoff and increases soil cover, which improve water infiltration and reduces moisture stress in low rainfall years. During periods of excessive soil moisture, tree based systems keep soils aerated by pumping out excess water and offer an economic return. The book contains 36 chapters mainly on agroforestry practices found in India and its role in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
