View Rights PortalPlanted forests, although only seven per cent of the world's forest resources, have superseded naturally regenerating forests as the principal source of industrial wood products. Lessening the pressure for wood production, tree planting has released natural forests to be managed for other purposes - carbon sinks, soil and water protection, conservation of biological diversity, recreation and amenity. Representing a complement, but not an alternative, to natural forests, planted forests have become increasingly important for reducing worldwide deforestation, loss of forest ecosystems and forest degradation. Examining the significance of this rapidly emerging world resource, chapters consider the strengths and weaknesses of planted forests, management objectives for their use and aspects of ownership and policy. Data from key production countries are used to evaluate the implications and sustainability of planted forests as a source of forest products as well as social and ecological issues.
Buhle is on her way to school, excited to show off her brand new hairstyle, when she notices a little seed on the ground. What will it grow up to be? A stick, a tree, a fruit? Will it make other seeds? And if a tree can grow from such a small seed, what could she grow into?
If Sam can ever finish raking the autumn leaves, he'll get to play with his friends. But more leaves just keep falling! Argh! It’s no help that he's distracted by how many fall at once or what shapes and colours they have either... or will Sam's once bitter chore turn into the playtime he wished for?
Step inside Mr Muku’s Hair Salon and choose your cut. Today is looking busy! A sneaky mohawk behind mom's back, a mistaken sneeze disaster, and a frightening phobia of scissors. Jump into a seat beside Mr Muku's customers and watch their hair and emotions fly across the room.
Late one night, Sam rolls off her bed and splash! Her entire room has flooded! Not just her room, but the whole house is filling up with water as the world floods outside. Confused and cold, Sam is rescued by a wise, little turtle called Neville, who takes her along the beautiful underwater highway, teaching her the ways of this watery world. 'Water isn’t cruel nor kind, but if you manage to keep your head, then the water will keep you,’ Neville repeats to Sam through their epic adventure across the newly formed oceans, meeting all sorts of interesting creatures along the way, to find and rescue Sam’s parents, now washed somewhere downstream.
In the past decade, a number of advances have been made in genetic engineering as applied to farmed animals. This book has been developed from invited presentations at a conference held in California in August 1997 to address this issue. It is written by representatives from the leading laboratories involved in attempts to improve agriculturally important mammals, poultry and fish. Current knowledge, methodology, technical improvements and successes in the applications of transgenic technology to a range of animals which are important in agriculture are brought together for the first time under one cover. This book is essential reading for research workers in animal genetics, breeding and biotechnology.
