Major efforts have resulted in significant improvement in air quality in Europe in the past few decades. However, air quality impairment is still an important cause of loss of life expectancy, as well as increased morbidity, and atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and tropospheric ozone (O3) remain the most health-relevant air pollutants. In eleven chapters authored by expert air quality scientists and specialists from academia and city administrations, this book describes the problem of urban PM air pollution and combines the experiences of different European cities concerning the selection, implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of specific measures to improve air quality.
