Tracing the cultural legacy of Irish Catholicism

From Galway to Cloyne and beyond

        by Eamon Maher, Eugene O'Brien

This book traces the steady decline in Irish Catholicism from the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1979 up to the Cloyne report into clerical sex abuse in that diocese in 2011. The young people awaiting the Pope's address in Galway were entertained by two of Ireland's most charismatic clerics, Bishop Eamon Casey and Fr Michael Cleary, both of whom were subsequently revealed to have been engaged in romantic liaisons at the time. The decades that followed the Pope's visit were characterised by the increasing secularisation of Irish society. Boasting an impressive array of contributors from various backgrounds and expertise, the essays in the book attempt to trace the exact reasons for the progressive dismantling of the cultural legacy of Catholicism and the consequences this has had on Irish society.

        Voices from the underworld

Chinese hell deity worship in contemporary Singapore and Malaysia

by Fabian Graham, Yangwen Zheng, Richard Madsen

Voices from the Underworld focuses on Singapore and Malaysia's contemporary Chinese Underworld traditions where Hell deities are now amongst the most commonly venerated deities on altars and when channelled through spirit mediums. Intended for academics, lecturers, students, and those intrigued with Chinese culture, while highlighting the Taoist and Buddhist cosmologies upon which present-day beliefs and practices are based, the ethnography provides readers with unique insights into the lived tradition.Embracing ontological and dialogic approaches to religious phenomena, alterity is taken seriously, and practitioner's beliefs interpreted without bias. The emic voice is literally heard through first-person dialogues between the author and channelled Underworld deities throughout the ethnography. This alternative approach challenges wider present-day discourse concerning the interrelationships between sociocultural and spiritual worlds.

        Voices from the Underworld

Chinese Hell deity worship in contemporary Singapore and Malaysia

by Fabian Graham, Yangwen Zheng, Richard Madsen

In Singapore and Malaysia, the inversion of Chinese Underworld traditions has meant that Underworld demons are now amongst the most commonly venerated deities in statue form, channelled through their spirit mediums, tang-ki. The Chinese Underworld and its sub-hells are populated by a bureaucracy drawn from the Buddhist, Taoist and vernacular pantheons. Voices from the Underworld offers an ethnography of contemporary Chinese Underworld traditions, where night-time cemetery rituals assist the souls of the dead, exorcised spirits are imprisoned in Guinness bottles, and malicious foetus ghosts are enlisted to strengthen a temple's spirit army. Understanding the religious divergences between Singapore and Malaysia through an analysis of socio-political and historical events, Graham challenges common assumptions on the nature and scope of Chinese vernacular religious practices.

Spirit Mates - The New Time Relationship

        by Anni Sennov, Carsten Sennov

Most people have heard of the terms ‘soul mate’ and ‘twin soul’.  What most people may not yet know is that the concept of soul mate refers to a consciousness realm that is about to completely disappear from the Earth in order to be replaced by the purer and more powerful spirit energy. This is creating great changes in consciousness on Earth and it also means that we humans finally have the opportunity to join together with our spirit mate. In this book the co-authors and spirit mate couple Anni and Carsten Sennov describe with love and insight the different paths and circumstances that can lead you to your spirit mate.

        Where the Rainbow Fell Down

A raw and deeply moving memoir beginning in mid century New Zealand, Lynette Robinson battles to survive an upbringing profoundly impacted by poverty, family dysfunction and the Catholic Church.

        by Lynette Robinson

WHERE THE RAINBOW FELL DOWN           Synopsis A memoir in two parts. The first half details the author’s life growing up in post-war New Zealand. Born into a dysfunctional NZ Catholic family with a disturbed mother, controlling father, and abusive step father, political and historical events help influence and shape her.  After leaving home to work at the age of 15, Robinson was coerced into marriage at 18 to a calculating, older man. She experiences years of marital unhappiness until she begins a career as a Marriage Guidance Counsellor, and finds unexpected love, joy and escape with a Catholic Priest.  During the second half of the story the priest’s tale unfolds. Brian is the only child of an introverted mother preoccupied with concealing her deformity, and a passive father who ‘went with the flow.’ As a young naïve man he was easily coerced into the priesthood and spent years of training in the Seminary where young men were conditioned and shaped for their role, their sexual natures suppressed, attitudes to women distorted, and their loyalty to the Church made absolute. Brian questioned all of this but continued. He then forms a relationship that challenges his Catholic conditioning and he determines to leave the priesthood. His struggle to escape the Church and the pressures placed on him to remain, test this relationship fully, but both remain firm.

        Shadow of the Piper

        by L. P. Hoffman

The Pied Piper still plays his tune, and in his shadow, many fall. When a disturbed teenager arrives at the Pittsburgh Rescue Mission, Cali turns things upside down by claiming to know “secrets” about a young evangelist’s shadowy past. The deranged girl lures Jesse Berry across the country only to slip away after they reach their destination. Hamlin, Montana, is not the quaint mining town it appears to be. Something sinister moves below the surface—the youth are at risk—and someone there wants Jesse dead. A few years back I was doing a book signing at a local book store.  It was that day that I learned about a horrific quadruple murder that shocked my community.  As the details emerged about the murderer’s involvement in the occult, I was reminded that these activities are perpetuated by a culture of secrets. It is my heart’s desire to reach those lured into this lifestyle. Why? Because I was once one of them and I know the collateral damage it can cause. Shadow of the Piper won Gold in Foreward Reviews 2013 IndieFab Book of the Year Awards for Adult Fiction-Religious and was named a Finalist in the 2013 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Contest for two categories—General Fiction/Novel (under 80,000 words) and Second Novel.
