THE SNIPER
by Chang Kuo-li
Description
Imagine Jason Bourne meets an older and grumpier John McClane, both inadvertent players in a top-secret, international arms deal scandal worth billions of dollars. Spice the story with black humor, Chinese cuisine, and secret societies, and you get THE SNIPER – a truly original take on the international thriller, Taiwanese style.
Twelve days before retirement, Taipei police detective Wu is given a curious case: A Navy officer’s suicide in his hotel room. He is clearly murdered, Wu thinks, but the military wants to close the case as suicide, with no questions asked. And that is only the first of a series of suspicious deaths.
At the same time, a sleeping cell is called to action. Alex is a young Taiwanese sniper, ex-Marine, ex-French Foreign Legion, currently a fried rice chef in Manarola, Italy. Ordered to assassinate a high-level Taiwanese government advisor in Rome, he is soon on the run, hunted by his old brothers-in-arms across Europe.
Who is killing Navy officers in Taiwan? And who ordered the kill in Rome? As Wu races against time to solve the mounting cases before retirement, Alex embarks on a journey back to Taiwan, back to his beginning, where a group of war orphans were raised by a benevolent “grandpa” and trained to serve the nation.
Based on the biggest military corruption case in Taiwan history – the murder of Navy Captain Yin Ching-feng – THE SNIPER is both a masterclass in thriller writing and a study of the heart of darkness in time of war and peace. Chang is working on the sequel, THE SNIPER AND THE MISSING BULLETS.

"I was blown away by Chang Kuo-Li’s vivid storytelling, high-speed action scene’s, and well-thought-out characters. Add international allure, from his home turf Taiwan, to the streets of Europe’s biggest cities, deeply layered intrigue, and a story based on reality, and you’ve got yourself a killer of a thriller. Chang can match himself with any big household thriller author, old and new. I absolutely loved THE SNIPER, and I can’t for more adventures with Wu and Alex." — Maarten Basjes, Senior Editor Luitingh-Sijthoff, The Netherlands
"It's been a long time since I read a crime novel as witty, gripping and civilized as THE SNIPER. The most original read of the year, definitely. The combination of picturesque setting, paced action, clever plot, fun, and stir-fried rice totally convinced me." — Marie-Caroline Aubert, Gallimard, France
"In my opinion, THE SNIPER is one of the most interesting thrillers around at the moment. It is not only the cracking suspense but also the absolutely endearing characters with their banter and their black humour and their love for food which I relished most. With its two settings in Asia and in Europe, it is kind of a 'missing link' in suspense fiction - eye-opening in terms of police work in Taiwan, but at the same time European readers don't have to be afraid of a story maybe too exotic for them. I would love to bring THE SNIPER to German crime aficionados!" — Carolin Graehl, Droemer, Germany
"As an editor who specializes in crime, mystery, and thrillers, I’m constantly on the lookout for projects that push the limits of the genre. THE SNIPER does just that. It’s an energetic, gritty, and tension-filled novel that skillfully incorporates the familiar themes, twists and turns, and great writing necessary to succeed in the genre — and at the same time manages to feel genuinely fresh. Chang’s writing is rich with textured descriptions of the sights, sounds, and smells of Taipei, Rome, Budapest, etc., and his dialogue — the slang, idioms, and animated speech of the cops, triads, and everyone in between — combine to give the novel a flavour of authenticity." — Doug Richmond, House of Anansi, Canada
