The old Ukrainian folk fairytale The Mitten is the first picture book illustrated by the young and extremely talented Hana Stupica. Hana did an excellent job at depicting the well-known Ukrainian tale about an old man who loses his little mitten in the middle of a harsh winter and then a little mouse, frog, bunny rabbit, fox, wolf, boar and bear make it their home.
At the Biennial of Slovene Illustration in 2014 Hana Stupica received the Hinko Smrekar Award.

Author Biography
In spite of her youth, Hana Stupica has created a very mature artistic work. The artist also convinced the jury at the 11th Slovene illustration biennale, which observed that Stupica’s illustrations in this picture book “have been created in a manner which has a strong tradition in Slovene illustrations for children, express artistic maturity and her striving to depict the atmosphere of a Ukrainian winter in the 19th century and to give an impression of the appearance of the rural landscape of the time, which the illustrator has skilfully and consistently woven in through the well-thought out sequencing of colours and textures.”
Hana Stupica tackled the depiction of the mainly animal characters with deep thought and in a research-like manner. The contrasts in her drawing and use of colour emphasise the cold winter landscape into which enter the warm feelings of the characters.
