The eleventh book in the series Mutations, Dissonances of progress discusses how the progress of technology brought undeniable benefits to humanity – such as advances in medicine and communication –, improving our daily life. On the other hand, it brought speed and superficiality to the relations of the human being with its surroundings, and degraded several aspects of current life with the exacerbation of individualism, the substitution of moral values, the overestimation of religious beliefs, the economy as the utmost referential of life in common, the knowledge of specialists to the detriment of thinkers. The essays in this volume analyze this situation and indicate paths for reflection.

Author Biography
Adauto Novaes is a journalist and professor. For twenty years he was the director of the Centre for Studies and Researches at the National Art Foundation of the Ministry of Culture. In 2000 he created the cultural production company Artepensamento and, since then, he organizes conference cycles that result in books. With Edições Sesc he published: Essays on Fear (co-edited with Editora Senac, 2007); Mutations: Essays on the New Configurations of the World (co-edited with Editora Agir, 2008); Life, Vice, Virtue (co-edited with Editora Senac, 2009); The Human Condition (co-edited with Editora Agir, 2009); Mutations: The Experience of Thought (2010); Mutations: The Invention of Beliefs (2011); Mutations: Tribute to Laziness (winner of the Jabuti Prize, 2012); Mutations: The Future Is Not What It Was Anymore (2013); Mutations: The Silence and the Prose of the World (2014); Mutations: Passional Sources of Violence (winner of the Jabuti Prize, 2015), Mutations: The New Utopian Spirit (2016); Mutations: Dissonances of Progress (2019) and Mutations: The Other Margin of Politics (2019).
