This work is the product of ten years of study. It is about the phenomenon of Muslim Slaves in the Chesapeake Bay Region from 1634 until 1865. The book examines fifty-five Muslim slaves in Maryland and another fifty-one from Virginia. It also looks at slave forts and prisons in Africa, the Middle Passage—the route by which West African slaves came to America—slave auciton and slave dealers in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia and many other issues related to American slavery in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.

Author Biography
Before his retirement in 2016, Stephen Vicchio taught for more than forty years at the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, and other universities in Britain and the United States. He has authored over two dozen books, as well as essays and plays, mostly about the Bible, philosophy and theology. Among his books since 2000 is his three-volume series on the Book of Job; The Antichrist: A History; Biblical Figures in the Islamic Faith, and books about the religions of American presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and the forthcoming Ronald Reagan’s Religious Beliefs.
