Hans Christian Andersen, Danish author and poet (2 April 1805, Odense – 4 August 1875, Copenhagen)
As an author of fairy tales, he was exceptional mainly due to his narrative style and content, as he made use of colloquial folk phrases and informal expressions to create distinctly different stories that deviated from traditional storytelling and literary practices. Fairy tales could be quite sad and even frightening, and they could also have unhappy endings. Many found his writing significant since even the most intimately moving events were described in a way that made the story an appealing short read to the adult while also captivating and full of surprises for the child. As a writer, Andersen selected themes and concepts drawn from many cultures of the time, which gave his work an international appeal.
An important common theme in fables and fairy tales are people who are on the margins of society because they are unconventional, insignificant or powerless. Elements of his own life are highlighted in some stories as a source of sadness and disappointment as well as happiness and wisdom. During his childhood and student years and also as a writer, he experienced many disappointments in life and love as well as over friends, acquaintances, and literary critics in whom he had placed his trust.
