        Conservative thinkers

        The key contributors to the political thought of the modern Conservative Party

        by Mark Garnett, Kevin Hickson

        This book outlines and evaluates the political thought of the Conservative Party through a detailed examination of its principal thinkers from Harold Macmillan to the present. Traditionally, the Conservative Party has been regarded as a vote-gathering machine rather than a vehicle for ideas. This book redresses the balance through a series of biographical essays examining the thought of those who have contributed most to the development of ideas within the party. The chapters benefit from archival research and interviews with leading Conservatives. The recent revival of Conservative fortunes makes the book particularly timely. The book begins with an introductory chapter explaining the role of ideology in the Conservative Party. It then traces the political thought of the Conservative Party through its principal theorists since the 1930s. These are Harold Macmillan, R. A. Butler, Quintin Hogg, Enoch Powell, Angus Maude, Keith Joseph, the 'traditionalists' (Maurice Cowling, T. E. 'Peter' Utley, Peregrine Worsthorne, Shirley Letwin and Roger Scruton), Ian Gilmour, John Redwood and David Willetts. The book concludes with an overall assessment of the political thought of the Conservative Party and the relevance of past debates for contemporary Conservatism. The book will be of considerable interest to academics and non-academics alike; for those who have a special interest in the Conservative Party but also for any student of contemporary British Politics. ;

        Die kleine Bücherei in der Church Lane

        Roman

        by Rachael Lucas

        Lucy, gestresste Lehrerin, braucht Ruhe. Sie entschließt sich zu einem sechsmonatigen Sabbatical und mietet kurz entschlossen ein Cottage in den Cotswolds, ganz in der Nähe des geschichtsträchtigen Bletchley Park. Dass sie sich noch um Bunty, die 96-jährige Schwiegermutter der Vermieterin, kümmern soll, scheint kein Problem. Schon kurz darauf findet sich Lucy samt ihrem kleinen Hund in Little Maudley wieder, einem Dorf wie aus dem Bilderbuch.Eigentlich möchte sie sich nur ausruhen, mit ihrem Hund spazieren gehen und lesen. Aber sie kann sich dem Charme des pittoresken Dörfchens nicht entziehen und ohnehin haben die Dorfbewohner ganz andere Pläne. Unversehens findet sich Lucy mitten in einer Kampagne zum Umbau einer alten Telefonzelle in eine Leihbücherei, und Bunty, ihre etwas kratzbürstige Nachbarin, hat ihre ganz eigene Geschichte von Bletchley Park und der baufälligen Telefonzelle zu erzählen. Und so ganz nebenbei verliebt sie sich in Sam, den alleinerziehenden Vater einer halbwüchsigen Tochter und Architekt von Baumhäusern.

        Adaptation and resilience in the performing arts

        The pandemic and beyond

        by Pascale Aebischer, Rachael Nicholas

        This book offers insights into some of the digital innovations, structural adaptations and analogue solutions that enabled live performance in the UK to survive through the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides evidence of values-led policies and practices that have improved the wellbeing of the creative workforce and have increased access to live performance. Through sections that address digital innovations, workforce resilience and programming live performances outdoors and in community settings, this book provides practical insights into the challenges live performance faced during the pandemic. It shows how, in order to survive, individuals and companies within the sector drew on the creativity and resourcefulness of its workforce, and on new and existing networks. In these accounts, the pandemic functioned as catalyst for technological innovations, stock-taking regarding exploitative industry structures, and a re-valuing of the role of live performance for community-building.
