Querido Diego, Te abraza Quiela by Elena Poniatowska

        by Elena Poniatowska

        by Nathanial Gardner

One of the threads that runs through Elena Poniatowska's oeuvre is that of foreigners who have fallen in love with Mexico and its people. This is certainly the case of Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela - a brief novel (so short it was originally published in its entirety in Octavio Paz's literary magazine Vuelta). The Russian exile and painter Angelina Beloff writes from the cold and impoverished post-war Paris to Diego Rivera, her spouse of over ten years. Beloff sends these letters to which there is no response during a time when the emancipation of women has broken many of the standard models and the protagonist struggles to fashion her own. Elena Poniatowska has (re)created these letters and within them one finds the unforgettable testimony of an artist and her lover during the valuable crossroads of a new time when Diego Rivera was forging a new life in his native country. In this edition, Nathanial Gardner comments on the truth and fiction Poniatowska has woven together to form this compact, yet rich, modern classic. Using archives in London, Paris and Mexico City (including Angelina's correspondence held in Frida Kahlo's own home) as well as interviews from the final remaining characters who knew the real Angelina, Gardner offers a mediation of the text and its historical groundings as well as critical commentary. This edition will appeal to both students and scholars of Latin American Studies as well as lovers of Mexican Literature and Art in general.

        »Ich habe etwas zu sagen«

        Frauen, die das Wort ergreifen

        by Rita Kohlmaier, Stevie Schmiedel

Schluss damit! Mitreißend geschriebene Porträts über Michelle Obama, Angelina Jolie, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Malala Yousafzai, Oprah Winfrey, Emma González, ebenso über Rosa Luxemburg, Waltraud Schoppe, Rosa Parks u. v. m.

        Shanghai Junior

        A Story in China 1929

        by Evan Huang

The year is 1929. The Republic of China in its 18th year of existence has just established its capital in Nanjing, but large swaths of the nation are still ruled by warlords and foreign powers still maintain their own strongholds. It’s a time of excitement, transformation, and chaos. In Shanghai, the financial and cultural hub of the Republic, “modern” young women and men in Western-style clothes head to movie theaters, dance halls, and coffee shops amidst the rapid development, and the new trends ripple across the nation. Beyond the splendor, however, a dark side exists: tensions between the Chinese administrators and their foreign counterparts threaten to boil over, criminal gangs compete for control of the still-thriving opium trade, and those seduced by the phantoms of money and power sometimes pay the ultimate price. This is the landscape in which Shanghai Junior takes place. Angelina Fan is coming to terms with the murder of her loving father, the latest casualty of the opium trade. The police commissioner, faced with the challenge of solving a high-profile murder in the French Concession district, calls in brave young bounty hunter Tony Shine. Brought together by fate, Angelina and Tony find themselves immersed in the adventure of a lifetime…and in mortal danger. Combining exquisite illustrations, historical details of a fascinating time and place, a suspenseful murder mystery, and a coming-of-age love story, author and illustrator Evan Huang brings us a thrilling new graphic novel.

THE NEVERENDING LOVE is the story of an amazing romance between two young enviable African elites, Mayimouna, a beautiful, outstanding attorney and Jean-Louis(re-named Jay by her), a handsome public servant. They marry, have three cute, intelligent children and live in incredible bliss. At first supportive of his wife's carreer, Jay progressively stops looking her professional success with favorable eyes. One day, without the slightest notice, he moves everybody to a tiny, shabby city, forcing her to quit her profession, which she worked her entire life for. His goal: to take her out of the media's spots and break her nascent fame, result of her memorable pleas in court. Anger, incomprehention, distress and frustration in Mayi's heart. In addition, Jay cheats on her and humiliates her. When their last children move abroad to study, Mayi divorces and goes back to work. Not accepting being droopped that way, Jay multiplies terrible behaviors: tells lies to their kids who stop talking to their mother no matter she tries to win their heart back, leaving her completely broken; corrupts a judge to cause her to loose an important case. Angelina, their maid overhears the conversation between the two men, manages to take some pictures of the judge surrounded with the bank notes just received, then reports everything to Mayimouna. But when she could take her revenge with these elements by denouncing Jay, she keeps quiet in order not to aggravate the situation with her children. At a point, Jay realizes his wickedness and the children their unfairness; they all ask for forgiveness. Though it's hard to grant, specially regarding Jay, Mayi overcomes her bitterness and the couple marry for the second time. Their bliss, greater than ever, goes on under Angelina's watch and who, paradoxically, becomes awfully jealous of her mistress. She sees no better occasion than the celebration of the couple's first anniversary of re-marriage, when their children, families and friends are gathered, rejoicing, to get both arrested by the police: Angelina has denounced them as author an accomplice of corruption. But how does she know about that? During the trial, with her eyes turning around the numerous cameras present in the court, she explains proudly, without any remose that one day, when cleaning Mayi's office at home, she came accross the text of law on corruption and read it thoroughly. Then she decided to use the pictures of the judge she told Mayimouna to have torn, to put an end to that wonderful happiness she would never have and grant herself a single day of fame, that very day!. Jay serves 15 years in jail and Mayi 20. Then, the day of her release, in front of the prison's door, right in the middle of the street, under a bright sunny sky, a very old man and a very old lady kiss each other finding their love and their bliss exactly where they left them long ago. They were old but their love showed no wrinkle!

        Truth Kills

        An Angelina Bonaparte Mystery

        by Nanci Rathbun

In TRUTH KILLS, librarian-turned-private-investigator Angelina Bonaparte is a woman on a mission––to ferret out cheaters and lowlifes and bring them to justice.  Angie has plenty of experience with such men––and not just because her former husband was the king of the lot.  As a P.I. in Milwaukee, most of Angie’s work is tracking down deadbeats and exposing unfaithful spouses.  But, now she’s been asked by a betrayed pregnant wife to prove her cheating husband, Anthony Belloni––aka Tony Baloney––innocent of the murder of his kept mistress.  Angie’s heart tells her to let the skunk rot in prison, but her head convinces her that adultery is not grounds for incarceration.  During the investigation, Angie encounters so many people who wished the victim dead that she has to develop a chart to keep track of them all.  She also encounters hunky police detective Ted Wukowski, who is still reeling from the death of his former female MPD partner at the hands of a narcotics gang, and thinks women don’t belong in the path of danger.  As they work toward the same goal––discovering the dead woman’s killer––Angie and Detective Wukowski realize their attraction for each other and must decide whether they are strong enough as individuals to work through her lack of trust and his fear of loss.

        Cash Kills

        An Angelina Bonaparte Mystery

        by Nanci Rathbun

When her office mate, accountant Susan Neh, brings Angelina Bonaparte a client named Adriana Johnson, the PI wonders how she can help this bedraggled young woman.   Adriana’s parents, immigrants from the former Yugoslavia, were murdered only a week earlier, in a robbery at their small hardware store. Now she has discovered that, despite living like the working poor, they were actually quite wealthy––with numerous large bank accounts located around the world.  Adriana is suspicious about her newfound status and hires Angie to discover the nature of her deceased parents’ wealth.  When Angie arrives to interview with the parents’ attorney, Herman Petrovitch, he is missing, but his secretary Dragana is there––lying dead on the office floor, with her head blown off.  Homicide detective––and Angie’s own boyfriend––Ted Wukowski, cautions her against getting involved in the murder investigation.  Of course, Angie pays little heed to his warning. Angie realizes immediately that Adriana’s concerns about her parents’ money are probably well- founded and, even worse, that the young woman may be in great danger herself.   She secures the assistance of her father’s rotund attorney, Bart Matthews, who quickly arranges for protection for Angie’s young client, while Angie begins to look into Adriana’s parents’ background.  In their family home, she discovers some strange artifacts in the attic, along with what appear to be Serbian military uniforms and an ethnic wedding dress.  Her investigation soon leads her to suspect a connection between Adriana’s parents, Attorney Petrovitch, and the Bosnian War of the 1980s.  How or why are they linked? Angie doesn’t know, but she’s as determined to find out as others are determined to prevent her from doing so.  So she’d better watch her back, because someone knows about the money in those bank accounts and they don’t intend to let Adriana inherit it.
