Yurko Izdryk’s poetry has an extraordinary optical effect as if he talks to you eye to eye reaching deep into your soul. The poems touch on such a level that you can find yourself inside them, and after all, inside the poet’s or lyrical hero’s life, living it as your own because it is so real. This personal touch is known in Ukraine as the phenomenon of Izdryk. Regardless of the phenomenon’s variating tonality – sometimes softly lyrical or harshly ironic, it remains native, yours, reflected by you. In addition to poems, there are also poet’s collages, “other things” that appear in words and pictures, thereby creating the body of one single object - the book as an artifact of life.

Taras Prokhasko wrote a series of sketches about the future that was a long time ago, and about everything that already is, but not knowing how long it will be. In particular, about such simple things as balconies and curtains, light and stones, swings and toilets, walking through the city and shooting a film in the Carpathian mountains, the formula of happiness and the influence factor, Babinton (mispronunciation of badminton) and Selbsferstendlich, and other such things. He also writes about the fact that you need to sleep carefully, eat breakfast - in your own way, and look - by shifting the vision. Yes, but that's not the main point. Because the main point here is the type of story in which reflections become elements of the plot and appear not as written after the fact, but spoken at the moment of their birth. And therefore, these are not sketches or essays, but stories in the strictest sense of the word.

Marguerite Duras wurde am 4. April 1914 in der ehemaligen französischen Kolonie Gia Dinh, dem heutigen Vietnam als Marguerite Donnadieu geboren und starb am 3. März 1996 in Paris. Sie besuchte das Lycée Français in Saigon und machte 1931 Abitur. Ein Jahr später siedelte die Familie nach Paris um, wo sie an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Paris und an der École des Sciences Politiques studierte. Von 1935 bis 1941 arbeitete sie als Sekretärin im Ministère des Colonies. 1939 heiratete sie Robert Antelme. Beide waren ab 1940 in der Résistance aktiv. Antelme wurde später ins Konzentrationslager Dachau deportiert. 1943 erschien ihr Debütroman Les Impudents (Die Schamlosen) unter dem Pseudonym Marguerite Duras, welchem keine besondere Aufmerksamkeit in der Öffentlichkeit zuteil kam. Mit Un Barrage contre le Pacifique (Heiße Küste), das 1950 erschien, hatte Duras größeren Erfolg. Sie schrieb nicht nur Romane, sondern verfasste auch Theaterstücke und trat als Filmregisseurin in Erscheinung.

The vision of the Ukrainian history dominant in the Russian Empire and in the Soviet Union focused exclusively on the heroic Cossacks and disenfranchised peasants. There was no room in it for the local elites: the Ukrainian aristocracy (szlachta) of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. As the result of this biased perspective, Ukrainians to this day know very little about the life of those people. This book invites the readers to take a closer look at the Ukrainian aristocracy. This introduction is done in a somewhat unusual form, through true anecdotes from the life of aristocracy gleaned from court records and other sources from the time. We get glimpses of the elites not only in their best garbs but also in their well-worn home clothes. The book brings together 105 brief chapters that describe how these people saw themselves, how they fought and made peace, how they fell in love and got married, how unwavering they were in the defense of their rights in court. Last not least, these essays explore whether the Ukrainian elites were mere extras and viewers in history or its active makers, resolute and strong in their insistence on defending and expanding their rights and freedoms.
