      • Sharjah Documentation and Archives Authority

        Sharjah Documentation and Archives Authority, earlier Sharjah Centre for Documentation and Research, was established by resolution no. (4) of 2010, issued by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad AL Qassimi, member of the Supreme Council, the Ruler of Sharjah. In 2016, H.H. Ruler of Sharjah issued resolution no. (4) of 2016, on the establishment of Sharjah Documentation and Archives Authority. The objectives were set to collecting and preserving documents related to the emirate, as well as the development of the documentation and archive system. Furthermore, the Authority shall oversee the management of current documents and mediate documents with concerned parties. The Authority represents the local body concerned with all matters of documents and archiving and it abides by the best international standards for preserving and maintaining documents. The Authority works to strengthen cultural and historical awareness and encourage scientific researches and intellectual creativity.

        12 Reimagined Tales From Africa

        However, the age-old tradition of oral storytelling is on the decline. Rapid urbanisation, the breakdown of the extended family, technology and so on have altered our social fabric. Whilst our daily lives are still peppered with snippets of remembered words of wisdom and proverbs, the reality is that a new generation of Africans have never had the pleasure of listening to a story being told by a storyteller. Story, Story! Story Come! is a contribution to larger efforts to revive storytelling in Africa and beyond. Through a global online contest, Positively African invited African writers, wherever they lived and whatever their age, to write a folktale – either based on an old one, or newly imagined. The challenge was to develop new narratives that speak to issues that are fundamental to Africa’s development in a way that is unconventional but true to our past traditions of folktale and oral storytelling. The stories needed to contain life lessons that are relevant for both young and old, however writers were invited to be as inventive and disruptive as they wished in terms of theme, form, language, characters, imagery and context. The ten winning stories are refreshingly imaginative and tackle a mix of issues. We criss-cross from South Sudan to South Africa, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. Some stories offer valuable moral lessons on greed and pride; others celebrate bravery, perseverance and friendship. One story takes us to a real archaeological site in Niger where a young girl imagines the future. In another, African water spirits share a world with a Beyoncé-obsessed teen that is taught a big lesson in humility. We have also included two additional stories, one by author and publishing partner Zukiswa Wanner and another by the editor of the anthology, Maimouna Jallow. One thing that they all have in common is that they speak to issues we face globally today, from an African perspective.

        This book summarizes the eight volumes of the Masada Final Reports series that have been published to date. The excavations led by Yigael Yadin at the site in the 1960s uncovered the Herodian palace-fortress where Jewish rebels in the revolt against Rome made their last stand against the mighty Roman legions in the years 66–73 CE. According to the accounts of contemporary historian Josephus Flavius, the defenders committed mass suicide rather than surrender. Hundreds of volunteers from around the world participated in those excavations. Chapters cover the architectural remains and small finds of the Herodian, Zealot, and Roman periods; the Roman siegeworks; and Byzantine period remains. Thousands of artifacts including manuscripts were found in the excavations. Masada is not only an archaeological site but also a symbol – mainly, though not exclusively, for modern Israelis. This is reflected in the hundreds of thousands of visitors every year from around the world. Masada was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. The final chapter of the book examines the so-called “Masada myth” in light of the archaeological evidence, evaluating recent criticism of the methodology and historical conclusions of the excavators of Masada in view of their actual findings.   Amnon Ben-Tor, Yigael Yadin Professor Emeritus of the Archaeology of Eretz Israel at the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University, was a team member of the Yadin excavation of Masada. He studied archaeology and Jewish history at the Hebrew University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1968 and taught until 2004 while excavating various sites in Israel, including a regional study of the western Jezreel Valley at the sites of Tel Qiri, Tel Qashish, and Yoqne'am. He has been the director of the Selz Foundation Hazor Excavations in memory of Yigael Yadin since 1990.   25.2 × 19 cm., 320 pages, hardcover, numerous photos and drawings.
