        Higher and Higher

by Guia Risari, Daniela Iride Murgia

In the garden, up against the tree, there are two tall, tall poles. They’re so tall that you can’t even see the top. I think about it for a little while and then start to climb. The view from up here is wonderful! I can see the fields, the lake, and the mountain. From up here, the trees look like bushes and the sky seems so close. “That’s dangerous! Get down from there!” Mom stamps her foot. So begins an extraordinary adventure, as the child keeps climbing higher and higher and higher….

Symbols are the signs that reveal and perpetuate the unlimited universe in our world and in our common life. They reveal meanings beyond those obvious to the senses and to our rational sphere. They exist before we can imagine or think about them: like genes and DNA on the physical plane, symbols pre-exist us, they carry with them the original instructions of life. They exist in nature and we have then encoded them to express in perceptible and comprehensible forms the essential forces that structure existence since the beginning. They are a synthetic map of the motions of what we call energy. The Power of Symbols is a deck of 41 Oracles with guide book.

        Il Giglio Bianco di Stalingrado

        The Great Air Battles

        by Andrea Laprovitera, Luca Vergerio

The White Lily of Stalingrad is the first volume of a new series dedicated to the Great Air Battles of the past, but above all to the pilots who took part in them, their courage and self-sacrifice. The human tribute of the pilots of the various nations at war was very high. Also for this reason many of them were young, often barely twenty years old and with very little flying experience that they necessarily acquired while fighting. The White Lily of Stalingrad is centred on the exploits of a girl, barely twenty years old, ace of the Soviet Aviation and pilot of a fighter plane, the Yakovlev Yak-1. A volume not to be missed, of pure Adventure, in the style of Edizioni Segni d'Autore!

      • Niente per lei

        by Laura Mancini

An extraordinary debut, the story of a woman who fights through life like a gladiator in post-WWII   Rome. It’s 1943—families are crowded and hungry. Tullia and her brothers are raised as slaves by their violent, furiously unhappy mother. Every evening she counts the money they were able to raise from the streets, and if it’s not enough, she beats them.   Tullia is forced to grow up pretty fast, to work with her head down. But the way she sees the world is brave, curious, full of life. Her desperate will to survive, to make something different out of the misery of her life, is so powerful it’s impossible not to remain in awe of her strength, her dignity, and her relentless resilience.   She leaves behind her abusive mother, but her majestic figure, her beauty, her clear intelligence, torment her as she becomes a woman and a mother, without ever learning how to be a daughter. She is lonely, but she’s not alone: fascinating, dirty, loud, hopeful, eternal Rome is a mother and a friend to Tullia who grows in its warm yet unforgiving embrace.   Laura Mancini’s writing is transparent and imaginative, atmospheric. Reading Niente per lei is like watching history go by outside a window: it’s impossible not to see in it a blurred reflection of ourselves.

I wish I was King Kong

        by Virginia Stefanini, Luca Tagliafico

Sometimes being a good and obedient girl is... monstrously boring! Much better to climb on the wall cabinets like King Kong, make jokes like the Invisible Man, dig the earth like a Werewolf. Thanks to the fantasy of the little character, every moment of a normal day spent with Daddy, from homework to shopping, from household chores at meals, it turns into an opportunity for funny transformations and fun games. A story in which imagination overturns stereotypes because little girls do not always dream of being Princesses, dads are not always out of the house for work, and even monsters are not all bad. A love letter to the cinema and its magic, to share with those we love the most.

        Like wild beast

        by Giuse Alemanno

Oppido Messapico, a small town in deepest Puglia. Costantino Ro chira and his henchmen plan to wipe out the rival mob family, the Sarmenta. It’s all about money and the neighboring Calabrese mob, the ‘Ndrangheta. But the plan works only halfway: by sheer luck the Sarmentas’ only son, Massimo aka Mattanza (Slaughter), a troubled and cruel kid, cheats death, together with his uncles and his cousin Santo. They all leave town on an old Fiat Regata, after clearing the family money and staging their own disappearance. Their trip leads them in the far North of Italy, in Lombardy’s Val Camonica, where an old friend and compatriot, Giovanni Argento, gives them shelter. There, Santo and Mattanza plot their revenge… “Like Wild Beasts” is a tough novel with hard-core nuances, sparing nothing and no one: a Tarantino movie, as told by Giovanni Verga.

        The Heart of Cocoa

        500 Years of Chocolate History

        by Napoleone Neri

The temptation par excellence, that craving that suddenly arises and we cannot fight it unless we satisfy it: the desire for chocolate. Perhaps it is because of this power that it is called the most loved food on the planet. Or perhaps it is because its cultivation, production and consumption - which has been growing strongly in the last 10 years - are spread across all continents. Napoleon Neri tells its story, starting with the plant and its fruit, from the pioneers of chocolate, to the birth of confectionery factories in the 19th century and then the great modern industries. He describes in detail the processing and transformation of cocoa beans, their beneficial properties, the sensory characteristics of the finished product, and spices everything up with a thousand anecdotes and curiosities that only those who have lived and worked in this world for so long can know.

        The black sea of indifference

by Liliana Segre / Filippo Civati

Liliana Segre’s testimony and her political message are shared in this essay by Giuseppe Civati that reports her words and her teachings, on the occasion of her appointment as lifetime Italian Senator by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.Segre was expelled from school in 1938. She tried to flee Italy as an asylum seeker but was denied protection and was sent back. On January 30th, 1944 she was deported to Auschwitz with her father Alberto, who deceased in the concentration camp. In the last thirty years she has been promoting an extraordinary campaign against indifference and against racism in any form or aspect. Her undisputed, strong and clear words are a message for girls and boys, her «ideal grandchildren»: we must never lose our rights and respect for people.

      • Ossigeno

        by Sacha Naspini

Paul Auster meets Stephen King in this poetic yet disturbing investigation into the darkest corners of human nature. After the coral, ambitious Le case del malcontento, Sasha Naspini comes back with a tightly plotted narrative that keeps you at the edge of your seat from page one to the very end, while drawing with sharp sensibility broken characters who fight against all odds to put their pieces back together in unexpected new shapes.   Laura disappears on the 12th of August 1999, at eight years old. She is found 14 years later in a bunker. She’s 22 now. Luca is having dinner with his father, just another evening, always the same for the last thirty years. Someone knocks at the door: it’s the police. What happens if one day you find out the person who raised you is a monster? Ossigeno is the story of those who stay after everything and everyone else have gone. The arrest of the monster is the beginning of a new life, one that seemed impossible to imagine – there are no cages anymore, but the characters are nevertheless stuck in their own minds, made of memories and scars they can’t forget. Luca’s father was his bridge to reality, he was his moral compass, someone to look up to. After the death of his mother, he had become his whole family. And throughout this whole time, he was monster. Where does this leave Luca? Is he a monster too, for sharing is father’s blood? Meanwhile, Laura is trying hard to live again. Her mother doesn’t know how to talk to her. Laura smiles, she acts normal. She likes to wander around the city – she likes to get lost in the crowd. But sometimes she feels the need to be surrounded by walls. She locks herself in a random bathroom. She could stay there for hours, until someone knocks. No one knows what she’s doing in there. Ossigeno is a matrioska. Characters close themselves in dark boxes – and a boy in Wyoming hides in a locket, not knowing he has always been captive inside someone else’s nightmare.   Ossigeno is not a psychological thriller – it is not a crime novel. It is a story of dark roots and curious, eerie minds. Of secrets buried so deep that become seeds for madness. Of masks worn so tightly they become your own skin. But what’s underneath, no matter how hard you try, is still there. Hidden. Observing. Waiting to see what happens. Sasha Naspini’s previous novel, Le Case del malcontento, was sold in China, Korea, Greece and Turkey and is being considered by many publishers worldwide. Its passionate, extremely sophisticated story-telling and unforgettable characterization makes it a psychological masterpiece, an analysis on the complexity of human nature – I would say it’s the Italian Spoon River Anthology, and the title has also been compared to Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. With a vernacular yet classical, literary language, and multiple points of view, Le Case is an epic rural tale with a universal echo. The novel plays with genres, mixing noir, psychological thriller, historical memoir and dark fairy-tale.
