Modern readers mostly know Arcadia in its complete 'old' version, but it is the New Arcadia (published in 1590) that was the most influential and most widely imitated literary text of the sixteenth century. While preserving the basic plot - a ruler attempts to escape an alarming oracle by moving his family to the countryside and engaging in shepherd-cosplay until the arrival of two foreign princes triggers a chain of events leading to the fulfilment of the oracle - this version adds further narrative strands and introduces ambitious revisions that showcase Sidney's stylistic brilliance as a prose writer.

Juan Carlos Onetti ist der große Solitär in der modernen lateinamerikanischen Literatur, einer der maßgeblichen Schriftsteller des 20. Jahrhunderts, ein Autor von künstlerischer, ästhetischer und moralischer Kompromisslosigkeit. In gründlich revidierten Übersetzungen und zum Teil erstmals auf Deutsch bietet die Werkausgabe sämtliche vollendete Romane und Erzählungen Onettis, zusammen mit Anmerkungen und Nachworten der Herausgeber. Am Anfang steht sein ruppiger Erstling Der Schacht von 1939 – ein unausschöpflicher, immer neu zu lesender Text. Daneben enthält Band 1 der Werkausgabe die beiden bislang noch nie auf Deutsch erschienenen frühen Romane Niemandsland (1941) und Für diese Nacht (1943). Band 2 der Werkausgabe versammelt drei Romane: Das kurze Leben, 1950 erschienen, hat Onettis Ruhm begründet: ein herausforderndes, ebenso faszinierendes wie hartes Stück Literatur. Noch stärker verdichtet, enigmatisch bei erster Lektüre und immer leuchtender beim Wiederlesen, sind Onettis Kurzromane Abschiede und Für ein Grab ohne Namen von 1954 und 1959. Band 3 der Werkausgabe enthält die beiden Romane Leichensammler (1964) und Die Werft (1961), die das Herzstück des Zyklus von Santa María bilden: Mit wenigen Strichen eine Gestalt in ihrer widersprüchlichen persönlichen Wahrheit hervortreten zu lassen, eine Konstellation zweier Menschen wie eingeätzt zu umreißen, herausgelöst aus allen vorgegebenen Mustern: diese Kunst Onettis ist oft bewundert worden. Band 4 der Werkausgabe enthält Onettis letzten Romane, in ihnen steigt er tief hinab in den Schacht seiner Erfahrung des Lebens – aber wie unterschiedlich ist das, was er als Erzähler schreibend hervorholt: vier Romane, ›reife‹ und ›späte‹, die verschiedener nicht sein könnten und die in je eigener Form und Sprache eine besondere Geschichte erzählen. This book is our principal source for the history of the Kingdom of Sicily in the troubled years between the death of its founder, King Roger, in February 1154 and the spring of 1169. It covers the reign of Roger's son, King William I, known to later centuries as 'the Bad', and the minority of the latter's son, William II 'the Good'. The book illustrates the revival of classical learning during the twelfth-century renaissance. It presents a vivid and compelling picture of royal tyranny, rebellion and factional dispute at court. Sicily had historically been ruled by tyrants, and that the rule of the new Norman kings could be seen, for a variety of reasons, as a revival of that classical tyranny. A more balanced view of Sicilian history of the period 1153-1169 has been provided as an appendix to the translation in the section of the contemporary world chronicle ascribed to Archbishop Romuald II of Salerno, who died in April 1181. In particular the chronicle of Romuald enables us to see how the papal schism of 1159 and the simultaneous dispute between the German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the north Italian cities affected the destiny of the kingdom of Sicily. In contrast to the shadowy figure of Hugo Falcandus, the putative author of the principal narrative of mid-twelfth-century Sicilian history, Romuald II, Archbishop of Salerno 1153-1181, is well-documented.
