        Jacques Demy

        by Darren Waldron, Diana Holmes, Robert Ingram

        Saccharine for some, poignant for others, Jacques Demy's 'enchanted' world is familiar to generations of French audiences accustomed to watching Christmas repeats of his fairytale Peau d'âne (1970) or seeing Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac prance and pirouette in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1966). Demy achieved international recognition with Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1963), which was awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes. However, beneath the apparently sugary coating of his films lie more philosophical reflections on some of the most pressing issues that preoccupy Western societies, including affect, subjectivity, self/other relations and free will. This wide-ranging book addresses many of the key aspects of Demy's cinema, including his associations with the New Wave, his unique approach to musicals, his adaptations of fairytales, his representations of gender and sexuality and his legacy as an iconic director for generations of audiences and filmmakers. ;

        China's Livestock Revolution

        Agribusiness and Policy Developments in the Sheep Meat Industry

        by Scott Waldron. Edited by Colin G Brown, John W Longworth, Zhang G Cungen.

        China is one of the world's largest developing agricultural countries and dominates the international livestock revolution in terms of its aggregate size and growth rate. While the sheep meat industry is still in the early stages of development, it is an excellent example of the upheaval taking place in Chinese agriculture. This book focuses on the growing sheep meat industry while drawing on associated research from other areas of the Chinese livestock section. Using this research, the authors use the sheep meat industry case study to illustrate the broader trends that apply more generally to the Chinese livestock sector, especially in the case of ruminant livestock.

        Sawdust Caesar Screenplay

        Feature Film

        by Howard Baker

        SAWDUST CAESAR Stylish young Mod, school-leaver Tommy has to forget his friends and grow up quickly when he gets caught up with the criminal activities of his murdered friend's big brother bent on revenge. The true 'face' of Sixties Mods and Rockers. * Sawdust Caesar depicts the coming-of-age of Tommy who, with his friend Dinger, both fresh out of school, are making a small name for themselves as up-and-coming young criminals. But when Dinger is murdered by Kenser, the leader of a gang of bikers, the mood of the story changes when Dinger's older brother Vince, one of the top men in The Firm, recruits Tommy in place of his little brother. While Tommy's young eyes are being forcibly opened by the more unpleasant aspects of gangland life, Vince continues his search for Dinger's killers, eliminating each of the gang one by one.   To further complicate Tommy's increasingly tenuous relationship with the mob, he is seduced by Beryl, the attractive wife of Ray, the top man. Worse, they are discovered in bed by Vince. But Vince has his own secret, a psychopathic aversion to street girls, and, after berating Tommy for messing around with his best friend's wife, rather than rock the boat he lets the matter drop, preferring instead to use the information as a means of retaining Tommy's diminishing loyalty. Kenser, by now the only survivor of the gang, is caught and achieves unexpected fame as the star of a snuff movie. But Vince's time on Earth also draws to a close when Ray discovers that he is the call-girl killer. Faced with gangland execution, Vince displays an unexpected side to his nature by letting Tommy off the hook - by failing to disclose information which could have led to his own survival.

        A curriculum study of the dialogue of "otherness" in the histories of public and independent schooling

        by Waldron, K. J. D.

        This text is a postmodern, historical analysis that seeks to trouble the distinction between the “private” and the “public” that is traditionally drawn in educational history and theory by examining the histories of public schools and independent schools around the topics of identity politics, accountability, and globalization. This work is unique in its focus on the histories of independent schoolings as being in dialogue with those of public schooling. Through a historical and theoretical examination of the dialogical space in-between the private/public divide in education around these three interrelated topics, this work seeks to troubles the private/public distinction, exploring the possibilities and futurities for curriculum work and education in the postmodern space in-between public schools and independent schools. It raises questions regarding what defines the structures of schooling in the United States as well as how contrasts between public and private spaces question traditional notions of democratic education. Kelley Waldron holds her Ed.D. in Curriculum Studies from Georgia Southern University with an emphasis on curriculum theory. She works as the Director of Studies and International Baccalaureate Programme Coordinator at St. Andrew’s School, an independent PK-12 school in Savannah, GA.

        The World Leaders Who Changed Economics

        by Vince Cable

        Through economics, our politicians have the power to transform people's lives for better or worse. Or Peron and his successors in Argentina who brought the country to the brink of ruin.In this magisterial history, economist and politician Vince Cable examines the legacy of 16 world leaders who transformed their countries' economic fortunes and who also challenged economic convention. From Thatcher to Trump, from Lenin to Bismarck, Money and Power provides a whole new perspective on the science of government. Examining the fascinating interplay of economics and politics, this is a compelling journey through some of the most significant people and events of the last 300 years.
