The stimulation of the vital energy Qi stands in the centre of Tra- ditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Thus any complaint – whether of physical or mental nature – is a disturbance of the harmonious relationship between the poles of Yin and Yang. The treatment is always about the restoration of the balance in order to stimulate the flow of the vital energy Qi and to stimulate the self-healing func- tions of the body. The therapeutic methods of TCM are manifold: acupressure, healing recipes and herbal treatments, (meditation) exercises from Qi Gong, therapeutic massages to stimulate the flow of Qi and an enjoyable, balanced diet according to the five elements – all these methods help to relieve everyday aches and to remain healthy. After an introduction to the basics of TCM, individual daily pro- grammes for all seven days of the week concentrate on each part of the body. They provide concrete guidance to do something good for the body with the various TCM therapies and to achieve a better general health.

The human being of the 21st century has become estranged from the natural rhythm of life. Our daily schedule is often not determined by the natural change of day and night, but is structured by a number of obligations and urgent tasks to which the daily routine must be re-adjusted. This is why many people feel rushed, overwrought and at some point exhausted; or they develop typical symptoms of stress that are medically "treated” – apart from the actual causes. According to the healing knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) even the infinite cosmos is subject to constant change – the interplay of phases of activity and resting, of Yin and Yang, the dynamic interplay of opposites. If this delicate balance is disturbed, the whole system gets out of sync. Psychosomatic complaints should therefore always be seen as warning signals. They show us that we should listen more or again to our own bodies, to our inner clock. Hu- man beings are also embedded in the rhythmic processes of nature, in the course of the seasons, of sun and moon, day and night. In the same way, each of our bodies has its active and its resting phase. The renowned TCM expert Li Wu shows in this guide which com- plaints refer to which organs at certain times of day, when which treatments are most effective and when it is time for work or rest. Le sens de cette formule renvoie au grand œuvre de la société consistant à transformer ses morts en ancêtres. Car dans les jardins, récolter des ignames requiert le concours des ancêtres ; à cette fin, il est nécessaire de convertir les morts récents en ancêtres. En étudiant les discours cérémoniels et le travail rituel, cet ouvrage se propose de comprendre une société qui n’oppose pas la nature à la culture, mais au contraire se prolonge dans l’univers, en particulier dans le monde végétal. C’est ainsi que les funérailles, parce qu’elles synchronisent la fin du cycle de vie humaine avec le cycle de l’igname, sont une remise en ordre social et cosmique, et un retour vers la vie. En cela, l’horticulture et les funérailles participent d’un vaste cycle rituel qui, en mobilisant la société, convoque aussi bien son héritage précolonial que des éléments adoptés de la mondialisation économique.

Parmi les biographies de savants, sont insérées de courtes anecdotes en bordure de la science –à la fois intéressantes et amusantes, mais aussi avec une moralité intellectuelle. Félix Dothan est un professeur émérite de physique à l’Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem. Né en Yougoslavie, il a fait ses études au Technion de Haïfa et a un doctorat de l’Université Hébraïque. Le domaine de sa recherche est la physique des gaz chargés électriquement (les «plasmas») et les technologies des hautes tensions. Le Pr Dothan a reçu en 2001 le Prix du Chef d’Etat Major de l’armée israélienne pour l’œuvre de sa vie dans le domaine technologique (particulièrement pour l’établissement du projet «Talpioth» pour l’encouragement des soldats intellectuellement doués).
