View Rights PortalA riveting history of the 'Ten Pound Poms', a wave of British citizens who migrated to Australia and New Zealand after the Second World War. Between the 1940s and 1970s, more than a million Britons migrated to Australia. They were the famous 'Ten Pound Poms' and this is their story. The authors draw on a vast trove of letters, diaries and personal photographs, as well as hundreds of interviews with former migrants, to offer original insights into key historical themes. They explore people's motivations for emigrating, gender relations and family dynamics, the clashing experience of the 'very familiar and awfully strange', homesickness and the personal and national identities of both settlers and returnees. Filled with fascinating testimonies that shed light on migrant life histories, 'Ten Pound Poms' will engage readers interested in British and Australian migration history and intrigued about the power of migrant memories for individuals, families and nations.

Fast growing human civilization and industrialization have resulted in increased amounts of pollutants such as pesticides, electronic wastes, etc. in the environment. These pollutants have hazardous impacts on living organisms including human health. Remediation of these contaminants is a serious environmental issue of current interest. Recent research has shown that soil microorganisms play an important role in remediating and improving disturbed ecosystems. This approach is eco-friendly and relatively less expensive. The investigations carried out using microbes for restoration of degraded eco-systems is covered in the proposed book.
Forests cover approximately 26% of the world's land surface area and represent a distinct biotic community. They interact with water and soil in a variety of ways, providing canopy surfaces which trap precipitation and allow evaporation back into the atmosphere, thus regulating how much water reaches the forest floor as through fall, as well as pull water from the soil for transpiration. The discipline "forest hydrology" has been developed throughout the 20th century. During that time human intervention in natural landscapes has increased, and land use and management practices have intensified. This book: - Presents cutting edge thinking and assessments in forest hydrology across all latitudes and terrains, including state-of-the-art modelling techniques and methodologies - Describes the latest challenges facing forest hydrology, such as increased occurrence of disturbance, due to extreme floods, drought, disease, and fire, potentially caused by climate change - Is written by an internationally renowned team of scientists, engineers, and managers to give a well-rounded review of the subject The book will be useful for graduate students, professionals, land managers, practitioners, and researchers with a good understanding of the basic principles of hydrology and hydrologic processes. ; This book presents cutting edge thinking and assessments in forest hydrology across all latitudes and terrains, including state-of-the-art modelling techniques and methodologies. Flowers are the precious gift which beautify the nature through its different colours and enhance human health. Ornamental plants provide environmental security for immediate living surroundings, thus intensive research in floriculture particularly on the crops were initiated earlier. This book will vividly highlights genetical and breeding application in flower crops covering wide range of aspects. Breeding techniques are largely focused around expediting the production of superior and stable lines in the case of self pollinating crops. Wide hybridization, tissue culture and mutagenesis are employed by breeders to generate new alleles. Broaden available genetic resources; molecular markers are used to assist breeders through marker assisted selection and to identify quantitative trait loci for traits of interest. The book makes the knowhow of breeding in its easiest way to the readers. It has been designed to cover all the aspects of breeding, the basic objectives, different breeding methods, methodology for improvement of specific crops, stress resistance, quality improvement, mutagenesis, molecular breeding and genetic engineering.

The book should give students a good foundation in climate change studies and inspire them to take up further studies in the advanced area of environmental sciences.
The implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has been a great success in temperate areas, but its role in tropical regions is less known. The tropics face specific challenges, namely weather that impacts insect life cycles and pesticide application. Beginning by reviewing the current state of pests, biological and chemical control and emerging technologies, this book then addresses specific crops, providing an up-to-date, research-oriented overview of IPM in tropical regions. This book will be a useful resource to entomologists, agronomists, horticulturists, and environmental scientists, nature conservation in tropics. The book is aimed to serve as reference book for students, teachers, researchers, extension functionaries and policy planners associated with insect pest management in tropics. This book can also be used as supplementary reading material in graduate and post graduate courses.
Crop growth and productivity is limited by a large number of adverse conditions of ambient environment and soil composition. Among these, drought and soil salinity are most prevalent stresses. In view of shrinking land resources and continuing pressures of growing population in most developing countries, it has become imperative that crop yields are not allowed to suffer on any type of cultivable land. Breeding crop varieties resistant to drought and salinity stress, therefore, assumes great importance. Major limitations to exploiting genetic resistance have been the lack of (i) definition of the level of stress that is relevant to crop productivity, (ii) screening procedures that can be reliably employed for identifying genotypes possessing attributes governing stability of performance under stress conditions, and (iii) Understanding of the processes that have direct as well as indirect relevance to conferment of resistance. This book presents the much-needed information on drought and salinity stress under one cover. s have been contributed by a leading authority and practitioner of his own field of specialization. The book will be an indispensable source of information for students and researchers interested in the subject of drought and salinity stresses and breeding approaches for achieving resistance to these stresses.
This book addresses the important issues of food security and sustainability of natural resources of India in the context of the projected climate change. Agroecosystems being the sites of intense interaction between human beings and natural world, global climate change is likely to affect the resource base, the crop productivity, input use efficiency and overall the profitability of agricultural production systems to a great extent. However, the adverse effects of climate change can be alleviated through mitigation and adaptation strategies which carry importance due to the increasing population and food demand in India. Thus, this compilation covers possible sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in Indian context including the potentials of soil carbon sequestration, crop pest and soil management and scientific livestock management as mitigation and adaptation options. This book also includes some topics on fundamentals of green house effect and the possible mechanisms by which soil nutrient availability alters due to CO2 fertilization. The schematic diagrams, tables and graphs have been included to make the book more illustrative. The likelihood of carbon credits and trading through best management practices can help Indian farmers earning carbon credits in future. The book is useful for researchers, farm managers, policy makers and also students engaged in climate change related studies.

The stimulation of the vital energy Qi stands in the centre of Tra- ditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Thus any complaint – whether of physical or mental nature – is a disturbance of the harmonious relationship between the poles of Yin and Yang. The treatment is always about the restoration of the balance in order to stimulate the flow of the vital energy Qi and to stimulate the self-healing func- tions of the body. The therapeutic methods of TCM are manifold: acupressure, healing recipes and herbal treatments, (meditation) exercises from Qi Gong, therapeutic massages to stimulate the flow of Qi and an enjoyable, balanced diet according to the five elements – all these methods help to relieve everyday aches and to remain healthy. After an introduction to the basics of TCM, individual daily pro- grammes for all seven days of the week concentrate on each part of the body. They provide concrete guidance to do something good for the body with the various TCM therapies and to achieve a better general health.
The human being of the 21st century has become estranged from the natural rhythm of life. Our daily schedule is often not determined by the natural change of day and night, but is structured by a number of obligations and urgent tasks to which the daily routine must be re-adjusted. This is why many people feel rushed, overwrought and at some point exhausted; or they develop typical symptoms of stress that are medically "treated” – apart from the actual causes. According to the healing knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) even the infinite cosmos is subject to constant change – the interplay of phases of activity and resting, of Yin and Yang, the dynamic interplay of opposites. If this delicate balance is disturbed, the whole system gets out of sync. Psychosomatic complaints should therefore always be seen as warning signals. They show us that we should listen more or again to our own bodies, to our inner clock. Hu- man beings are also embedded in the rhythmic processes of nature, in the course of the seasons, of sun and moon, day and night. In the same way, each of our bodies has its active and its resting phase. The renowned TCM expert Li Wu shows in this guide which com- plaints refer to which organs at certain times of day, when which treatments are most effective and when it is time for work or rest. Organize your daily life with the effective methods and remedies of TCM according with the natural needs: only if we live mindfully and in harmony with our inner clock, we find back to our natural biorhythm – and thus to well-being and health.
