        Vegetable Brassicas and Related Crucifers

        by Geoffrey R Dixon

The Brassica crops provide the greatest diversity of products derived from a single genus. As vegetables they deliver leaves, flowers, stems and roots that are used either fresh or in processed forms. This book covers the Occidental crops derived from B. oleracea (cole or cabbage group) and Oriental types from B. rapa (Chinese cabbage and its relatives). Both groups are of immense importance for human nutrition, containing vital vitamins and cancer preventing substances.

THE DAO OF TCM: WHEN LAOZI AND ZHUANGZI MEET HUANGDI NEIJING

        by Tsai Biming

Many people in Europe and America have long been familiar with the ancient Chinese sage Laozi and the philosophy of the Dao De Jing. Even more of us have experienced the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) through herbal treatment, acupuncture, traditional massage, and more. But how many know that when Daoist philosophy and the ancient science of traditional medicine come together, they form a powerful, energizing formula for holistic living?   Tsai Biming’s four-part treatise on the power of Daoist thought and TCM puts us in direct conversation with ancient sages, as Tsai unravels the rich metaphors of the Dao De Jing and the Zhuangzi and illuminates their relevance to contemporary life. Why do people today expend all our energy on achieving success, yet never seem to find satisfaction? Why do we know so much about advancement, yet nothing about happiness?   Tsai’s four-part book provides inspiring answers to questions like these. Part I examines the nature of ambition, finding guidelines in Daoist texts for those of us looking to keep both our dreams and our bodies healthy. Parts II and III lay out the many differences between mainstream values and the values of traditional Chinese medicine and life philosophy, while Part IV gives us a key to navigating those discrepancies by illuminating “the use of uselessness”, the secret at the heart of Daoism.   A long-time adherent of traditional Chinese medicine, Professor Tsai Biming brings her expertise in Chinese philosophy to bear in a way that reveals the undying relevance of ancient texts as well as the true coherence between Daoism and traditional medicine.

        Son of Formosa

        by Yu Peiyun, Zhou Jianxin

        * 2021 Taipei Book Fair Award   The true story of Tsai Kun-lin, born in Qingshui, Taichung, in 1930, as he lives through Japanese rule and the arrival of the Kuomintang. Polite and a good student, Tsai found himself sentenced to ten years in jail for “membership of an illegal organization” after attending a high school book club. This graphic novel recounts his tenacity and determination.     The 1930s, Japanese-ruled Taiwan. A young boy, Tsai Kun-lin grows up, accompanied by picture books and folk tales. But the merciless flames of World War 2 soon arrive – protests, bombing and conscription will change his life forever.   After the war, the young booklover learns a new language and hopes to finally live a life of peace, never expecting his attendance at a high school book club will land him in jail. Transported to the penal colony for political prisoners on Green Island, he loses ten years of his youth to torture, terror, hard labor, and brainwashing.   This series of graphic novels draws on the actual events of Tsai’s life. At Taichung First Senior High School he was a trainee soldier and a good student; years later he was sentenced to ten years in prison for attending a high school book club. On release he worked in publishing and advertising, and founded Prince, a children’s magazine which kept Taiwan’s cartooning tradition alive during martial law. He raised funds to allow a rural little league team to compete in Taipei and, on retirement, became a human rights activist.   Tsai’s life is Taiwan’s recent history writ small. There is darkness, but always a light; hardship, but always the strength to endure. A simple yet graceful style faithfully recreates the historical scenes, with the accurate use of the Chinese, Taiwanese, and Japanese languages bringing those times to life. The warmth and vitality of the storytelling demonstrate that while we cannot control events, we can, as Tsai did, persevere through them.

Graph Theory, with an Algorithmic Perspective

by Gerard Jennhwa Chang, Mu-Tsun Tsai

Among various research methods of graph theory, the key ones are topology, probability theory, algebraic method, and algorithm. Efficient algorithm can assist the computer to perform fast calculation and is practically valuable. From the mathematical perspective, algorithm is in fact a form of mathematical induction and therefore it can be used to prove theorems. Conversely, an inductive proof of a theorem can be converted into algorithm.

The Public Health Effects of Food Deserts

        Workshop Summary

by Paula Tarnapol Whitacre, Peggy Tsai, and Janet Mulligan, Rapporteurs; National Research Council

In the United States, people living in low-income neighborhoods frequently do not have access to affordable healthy food venues, such as supermarkets. Instead, those living in "food deserts" must rely on convenience stores and small neighborhood stores that offer few, if any, healthy food choices, such as fruits and vegetables. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and National Research Council (NRC) convened a two-day workshop on January 26-27, 2009, to provide input into a Congressionally-mandated food deserts study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service. The workshop, summarized in this volume, provided a forum in which to discuss the public health effects of food deserts.

        Out of the Darkness

        by Dolores Durando

From the author of Beyond The Bougainvillea Even in the darkest hours he sought the light of love. That he survived was a miracle. That he found happiness, a victory. Meet Marty, a young boy born into a brutal family environment where not even a shred of dignity, hope and kindness can take root. Child protective services were a thing of the future in the 1950’s, and so there was little help for Marty or others like him. He endured almost unbelievable cruelty, both from his family and at the California institution where the state placed him. But every dark side has its opposite. Marty is rescued by the love of Joe, an old man who refuses to give up on him. Marty goes to live with Joe’s wealthy friend, Benito, who owns a vineyard in the heart of the magical Napa Valley. Benito’s large, loving family includes Rosita, a shy girl whose beauty is marred by a cleft palate. Marty is soon absorbed into a wonderful new life; Rosita gives him unconditional love. His transformation is stunning. For more than twenty-five years author Dolores Durando worked in the mental health field, primarily as a Licensed Psychiatric Technician. Out of the Darkness is based on events she witnessed during an era when many large mental institutions were no better than prisons run with a brutal lack of enlightenment or compassion. Today, at 91, she is thankful to see the sweeping reforms in mental health and the positive results of publicity, education and modern technology. In addition to her writing, she is an award-winning sculptor and painter. Her previous title for Bell Bridge Books is Beyond the Bougainvillea, a historical based on the author’s experiences working among the diverse men and women who built the great California dams of the early 1900’s.

Achieving Sustainable Global Capacity for Surveillance and Response to Emerging Diseases of Zoonotic Origin

        Workshop Summary

by Alexandra Beatty, Kimberly Scott, and Peggy Tsai, Rapporteurs, Committee on Achieving Sustainable Global Capacity for Surveillance and Response to Emerging Diseases of Zoonotic Origin, National Research Council

One of the biggest threats today is the uncertainty surrounding the emergence of a novel pathogen or the re-emergence of a known infectious disease that might result in disease outbreaks with great losses of human life and immense global economic consequences. Over the past six decades, most of the emerging infectious disease events in humans have been caused by zoonotic pathogens--those infectious agents that are transmitted from animals to humans. In June 2008, the Institute of Medicine's and National Research Council's Committee on Achieving Sustainable Global Capacity for Surveillance and Response to Emerging Diseases of Zoonotic Origin convened a workshop. This workshop addressed the reasons for the transmission of zoonotic disease and explored the current global capacity for zoonotic disease surveillance.

LE GRAND ART DES PETITES ESCROQUERIES

THE GREAT ART OF SMALL SCAMS

        by SOPHIE ENDELYS

A passionate author, a gourmet editor, a stalking pianist, a depressive puppeteer, a seductive psychologist, a ghost lawyer, a mother hen concierge, a poetry glasses maker ... these are the main characters of this suspense fiction novel where lies and manipulation are at the heart of a story full of mysteries.   2010 - Clémence James, a silent and lonely pianist, receives a package containing 502 drawings made by her mother Julia, during her long hospital stay in a Norman convent after a serious car accident. Clémence is upset because her mother was declared dead just after the tragic event in 1989. These sketches prove she was alive until 1999. Ten years of lies … Clémence was unable to visit her. Julia James was a writer. Just before her accident, she took refuge in a small Norman house in order to finish working on her manuscript. It was entitled The Great Art of Small Scams. In her fascinating writings, Julia indicates the progress of her research into history of impostors, liars, and other deceivers. But these notes will remain a draft forever and, it is a shame for her editor Marius who, now retired, has chosen to drown his fears into the culinary art. Why did someone fake Julia’s death? Was it her husband, who was about to divorce and wanted to rush things in order to get married again quickly with another woman? Or her publisher, who granted her an astronomical advance he had to pay every month for the writing of a book that would never be released? And, was the accident really an accident? The truth is probably hiding near the Norman house where Julia stayed with her daughter at the twilight of her life. Behind the half-timbering of this house and across the surrounding area, a large-scale sham had emerged and had spread like weeds. Did the author find out about it? Twenty years later, Clémence is determined to drop the masks.

by Steve Coomes, Kim Huston, Michael Mangeot

Welcome to Bardstown, KY: The Bourbon Capital of the World® Bourbon’s popularity is now a global phenomenon, but you need only look at Bardstown, Kentucky, to see its remarkable and evolving impacts. This historic city of 13,500 people is booming as a result, but it’s also enduring growing pains.   The economic impacts from a massive influx of tourists to what is now America’s bourbon epicenter are positive on many levels, but with those crowds comes pressure on infrastructure, services and accommodations. The demand for hotels, bars and restaurants is at an all-time high, and investors from across the globe are addressing those needs.    Still, as a two-century-old Kentucky cultural and entertainment center – long before it was discovered by bourbon drinkers – many locals want to ensure the traditional Bardstown experience doesn’t disappear amid novel entertainment options.

        Korean Culture in 100 Keywords

by Cho Yong-hee, Han Yumi, Tcho Hye-young

The 100 keywords for this book have been selected through several rounds of surveys with the students at the Korean Cultural Center in Paris, France. The 100 facts address extensive sectors. The facts have been selected because they not only help French and global learners have an overall understanding of the state of Korea, but also represent the background knowledge necessary to study essential words and grammar in learning Korean from various aspects including culture, history, tradition and society. The 100 keywords thus chosen serve as the topic of each subject. This book has a total of 100 subjects, largely divided in six themes so that learners can easily search the subject they would like to know. The six themes are: Theme 1: Symbolic Icons (10 Subjects) Theme 2: Food, Clothing and Shelter (12 Subjects) Theme 3: Geography and Tourism (21 Subjects) Theme 4: Society & Daily Life (19 Subjects) Theme 5: History and Religion (20 Subjects) Theme 6: Arts and Culture (18 Subjects) Each subject consists of two pages. On the upper left side is a photo that can explain the subject at a glance. Under the photo is a Korean text that introduces contents that must be learned regarding the subject. In order to help the learning, two questions are added to check the learner’s understanding of the text. The answers are provided in the appendices at the end of this book. On the upper right side is the English translation of the Korean text. The translation will serve for learners to measure their level of Korean proficiency in terms of understanding; in addition, it will satisfy the need for Korean learners who have long wanted to have a bilingual textbook. On the bottom is the English translation of each Words and Expressions section to help readers understand the Korean text. Small photos that are relevant to each subject are added to provide greater enjoyment.

Sustaining Global Surveillance and Response to Emerging Zoonotic Diseases

by Gerald T. Keusch, Marguerite Pappaioanou, Mila C. Gonzalez, Kimberly A. Scott, and Peggy Tsai, Editors; Committee on Achieving Sustainable Global Capacity for Surveillance and Response to Emerging Diseases of Zoonotic Origin; National Research Council

H1N1 ("swine flu"), SARS, mad cow disease, and HIV/AIDS are a few examples of zoonotic diseases-diseases transmitted between humans and animals. Zoonotic diseases are a growing concern given multiple factors: their often novel and unpredictable nature, their ability to emerge anywhere and spread rapidly around the globe, and their major economic toll on several disparate industries. Infectious disease surveillance systems are used to detect this threat to human and animal health. By systematically collecting data on the occurrence of infectious diseases in humans and animals, investigators can track the spread of disease and provide an early warning to human and animal health officials, nationally and internationally, for follow-up and response. Unfortunately, and for many reasons, current disease surveillance has been ineffective or untimely in alerting officials to emerging zoonotic diseases. Sustaining Global Surveillance and Response to Emerging Zoonotic Diseases assesses some of the disease surveillance systems around the world, and recommends ways to improve early detection and response. The book presents solutions for improved coordination between human and animal health sectors, and among governments and international organizations. Parties seeking to improve the detection and response to zoonotic diseases--including U.S. government and international health policy makers, researchers, epidemiologists, human health clinicians, and veterinarians--can use this book to help curtail the threat zoonotic diseases pose to economies, societies, and health.
