        So exotic, so homemade

        Surrealism, Englishness and documentary photography

        by Ian Walker, John Taylor

        In his previous book City Gorged with Dreams (2002), Ian Walker challenged established ideas about Surrealist photography by emphasising the key role played by documentary photographs in Parisian Surrealism. Now Walker turns his attention to the arrival of Surrealism in England in 1936. Examining for the first time the surprising relationship between Surrealism and English documentary photography and film, the book shows that some of the most interesting work of the period was made in the ambiguous spaces between them. One of the key themes in this book is the relationship between the 'homely' and the 'exotic', in the innovative mix of poetry and ethnography in Mass-Observation for example, or the shadowed England constructed in the work of Bill Brandt. Based on extensive archival research, interviews and visits to sites where the photographs were made, this book is rich in detailed analysis yet written in an accessible and often witty style. ;

        Conga Line on the Amazon

        by David Myles Robinson

        David Myles Robinson was eight years old when he first got hooked on travel. Since then, he’s seen most of the world—all its continents plus, he laments, “far too many places where travel is now off-limits.”After a lifetime of visiting near and far, in heat and in cold, in comfort and in danger, Robinson has put it all together now in this unique collection of the varied travel adventures he’s found—and the lessons he’s learned from them. A Fellini-esque view of the Amazon, a Mercedes caravan to Istanbul, Jane Goodall's amazing chimps—just part of a travel trunk full of experiences guaranteed to keep you seesawing from “Boy, I'd love to do that" to “Sure glad it was him, not me.”In Conga Line on the Amazon, Robinson brings to his first travel book the same gift for intriguing narrative and sharp characterization that has won praise for his six highly successful novels. Some of his tales may be for the strong of heart, but they’re all for the reader with a yen to be entertained by one intrepid man’s adventures and misadventures exploring the strange and wonderful world we live in.

        A oficina do Cambeva (Cambeva's workshop)

        by Lido Loschi

        Cambeva's workshop is the first of four books of the collection "Presente de Vô" in partnership with Grupo Ponto de Partida. The book is a mixture of colours and elements that highlight the memory of the world, in which seekers of memories have the mission of bringing light and life to objects found in the travels of two characters: Zalém and Calunga. Cambeva is a restorer who, when the world lost its embrace, tried to reinvent it; he is the grandfather who mends dreams, forgotten things and lost emotions, to whom the seekers ask for help to fix something. In a magical universe, full of children, grandchildren, stories and memories of his lineage of restorers, when faced with this request for restoration, he makes room to bring back an emblematic figure who can no longer sing. A story about memories, care and affection...

        Der Kinogeher

        by Walker Percy, Peter Handke

        Die Filmbesuche des Kinogehers lassen sich nicht als triviale Zerstreuung verstehen, sie offenbaren ihm die Einsamkeit und Hilflosigkeit seiner Suche. Doch jene Suchen, von denen die Filme erzählen, sind verfälscht: Der Held und Außenseiter endet glücklich als Konformist in der Menge. Die Mutter des Kinogehers, die ihr Kind der vornehmen Verwandtschaft überließ, als sie den einfachen zweiten Mann heiratete, eine Schafferin, die das hier und jetzt Notwendige ohne viel Worte tut, gibt dem Sohn einen Hinweis, als sie in ihrer unsentimentalen Art ihm von der Unrast und den Depressionen seines Vaters, des Arztes, berichtet. Schließlich findet der Kinogeher einen Weg, auf dem er zu suchen beginnen kann. Der Weg führt fort von leicht verdientem Geld und schönen Mädchen, fort auch von spektakulärer Leistung ... »Eine seltene wahre Geschichte« nennt der Üersetzer Peter Handke den Roman, den ersten des Autors, der 1961 mit dem National Book Award ausgezeichnet wurde und Walker Percy sofort bekannt machte.

        Aus dem Wörterbuch des Teufels

        by Ambrose Bierce, Dieter E. Zimmer, Dieter E. Zimmer, Dieter E. Zimmer

        Bierce stellt in diesem Wörterbuch den Kanon der menschlichen Schwächen, der Vorurteile, Absurditäten und Gewohnheiten zusammen. Die spitzfindig-bösen ››Definitionen‹‹ der Wörter legen genau den Aspekt in ihnen frei, den das normale Bewusstsein heuchlerisch zu vertuschen versucht.

        Oikoá

        by Felipe Valério

        The name of this book is Oikoá, which means life in the language of the Guarani Mbya people. This name was chosen because the indigenous peoples have been the guardians of life on planet Earth: it is in their territories that there are more types of trees and plants, animals, fish, birds, insects, and where the rivers and forests are best preserved.
