Lives of Pope Leo IX and Pope Gregory VII

The eleventh-century papal reform transformed western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV. Also included is a translation of Book to a Friend, written by Bishop Bonizo of Sutri soon after the death of Gregory VII, as well as an extract from the violently anti-Gregorian polemic of Bishop Benzo of Alba (1085) and the short biography of Leo IX composed in the papal curia in the 1090s by Bishop Bruno of Segni. These fascinating narrative sources bear witness to the startling impact of the papal reform and of the 'Investiture Contest', the conflict of empire and papacy that was one of its consequences. The Swabian chronicles

Three of the most important chronicles of eleventh-century Germany were composed in the south-western duchy of Swabia. The chronicles reveal how between 1049 and 1100 the centripetal attraction of the reform papacy became the dominant fact of intellectual life in German reformed monastic circles. In the abbey of Reichenau Herman 'the Lame' composed a chronicle of the reign of Emperor Henry III (1039-56). His pupil, Berthold of Reichenau, continued his master's work, composing a detailed account of 1076-1079 in Germany. Bernold, a clergyman of Constance, continued the work of Herman and Berthold in a text containing the fullest extant account of 1080-1100. Herman's waning enthusiasm for the monarchy and growing interest in the newly reformed papacy were intensified in Berthold's chronicle, and writing in the new context of the reformed monasteries of south-western Germany, Bernold preached total obedience to the Gregorian papacy. The Swabian chronicles are an indispensable resource to the student of the changing loyalties and conflicts of eleventh-century Germany. ;

Marcel Mauss (1872–1950), Soziologe und Ethnologe, lehrte an der École Pratique des Hautes Études, bevor er Professor am Collège de France wurde. Zusammen mit Émile Durkheim begründete er die Zeitschrift L’Année Sociologique und zusammen mit Lucien Lévy-Bruhl und Paul Rivet das Institut d’Ethnologie. Von ihm liegt im Suhrkamp Verlag außerdem vor: Die Gabe. Form und Funktion des Austauschs in archaischen Gesellschaften (stw 743) Eva Moldenhauer, 1934 in Frankfurt am Main geboren, war seit 1964 als Übersetzerin tätig. Sie übersetzte Literatur und wissenschaftliche Schriften französischsprachiger Autoren ins Deutsche, u.a. von Claude Simon, Jorge Semprún, Marcel Mauss, Mircea Eliade, Gilles Deleuze und Lévi-Strauss. Sie wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Helmut-M.-Braem-Übersetzerpreis und dem Paul-Celan-Preis. Eva Moldenhauer verstarb am 22. April 2019.

Gabriel de Tarde (1843–1904) war zu Lebzeiten neben Emile Durkheim die Hauptfigur der Soziologie in Frankreich: Professor am angesehenen Collège de France, Mitglied des Institut de France, Präsident der Internationalen Gesellschaften für Soziologie und Rechtswissenschaften, deren Ruhm von Amerika bis Rußland reichte. Bei seinem Tod wurde er mit Comte und Taine, mit Darwin und Spencer verglichen; für Henri Bergson war er ein Denker, »der uns unermeßliche Horizonte eröffnet hat«.In seinem Hauptwerk Die Gesetze der Nachahmung von 1890 entwirft de Tarde eine Soziologie, die die Erklärung jeglicher gesellschaftlichen Veränderung aus dem Begriff der »Nachahmung« gewinnt: »Gesellschaft ist Nachahmung!« Anstatt den Blick auf Individuen und Gruppen zu richten, konzentriert sich de Tarde auf die Handlungen und Ideen, nach denen diese Individuen und Gruppen klassifiziert werden. An ihnen liest er die Variablen und Regularitäten ab, die das Muster des Sozialen bilden. Zu den »logischen Gesetzen der Nachahmung« zählt dann etwa, daß Nachahmung aus der Kombination existierender Nachahmungen entsteht und durch den sozialen Kontext und die Fähigkeiten der beteiligten Personen beeinflußt wird. Der Erfolg einer Nachahmung besteht so in ihrer Vereinbarkeit mit anderen Nachahmungen, aus denen sie durch eine Ersetzung ausgewählt und angenommen wird. Diese Gesetze und die fundamentale Rolle der Nachahmung für soziale Phänomene überhaupt untersucht de Tarde anhand einer Fülle von konkreten Beispielen aus allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft. Sein Buch ist ein Meisterwerk der Soziologie, dessen Einfluß u.a. auf Gilles Deleuze, Bruno Latour, Peter Sloterdijk und die moderne Theorie der Meme von seiner ungebrochenen Aktualität zeugt.
