Recent decades have witnessed major changes in gender roles and family patterns, as well as a falling birth rate in Ireland and the rest of Europe. While the traditional family is now being replaced in many cases by new family forms, we do not know the reasons why people are making the choices they are and whether or not these choices are leading to greater well-being. While demographic research has attempted to explain the new trends in family formation and fertility, there has been little research on people's attitudes to family formation and having children. This book presents the results of the first major study to examine people's attitudes to family formation and childbearing in Ireland. Based on a nationwide representative sample of 1,404 men and women in the childbearing age group, the study was carried out against a backdrop of changing gender role attitudes and behaviour as well as significant demographic change.

Their romance unfolds against the dissection of two citizen marriages, the Glisters' and the Purges'. Mistress Purge attends Familist meetings independently, arousing her husband's suspicions about her marital fidelity. Two libertines, Lipsalve and Gudgeon, go in search of sex and solubility (freedom from constipation), receiving more than they bargain for in respect of the latter. This scholarly edition of Family of Love marks the first occasion on which the comedy is attributed to Lording Barry in print. It brings together literary and historical discussion with a thorough analysis of the play's disputed authorship. Tomlinson highlights Barry's rich vein of burlesque humour in a comedy that combines magic, a trunk, and a mock-court session with vigorous colloquial language.

Migration and social policy in a changing world bridges the generally separate fields of social policy and migration studies. This book traces social policy responses to migration from the Industrial Revolution to today's era of globalisation and large-scale migration. Through case studies from across the globe, the book explores key themes including rural-urban migration, social citizenship, welfare internationalism and diasporic care systems. It examines how migrants are included in or excluded from social citizenship in host societies, and how they become providers of welfare services such as health and social care. Moving beyond a methodological nationalist focus, the book investigates migrant incorporation into welfare states through family networks, faith communities, and other informal welfare structures. It combines migrants' experiences with host societies' immigration politics, institutional perspectives and policies to present a comprehensive analysis of the migration-welfare relationship. This volume fills a gap in academic literature and offers policymakers, practitioners and scholars a framework for understanding the interplay between migration and social policy in our changing world.
