The safety of foods of animal origin is particularly relevant because the large majority of foodborne diseases come from poultry, eggs, meat, milk and dairy products and fish. This textbook covers an integrated approach to this type of food production, hygiene and safety and shows how it results in concurrent benefits to animal well being, human health, protection of the environment and socioeconomics.

Entangled in Yugoslavia
An Outsiders Memoir
by Stephanie Allen-Early
Entangled in Yugoslavia – an Outsider’s Memoir is a compelling personal memoir as well as a portrait of a collapsing society. A Foreign Service wife returns to Belgrade – the scene of a previous posting – to find that the society she knew before as a peaceful, stable place under socialism, is caught up in political upheaval. Caught up in the psychological turmoil, she finds release while participating in the international relief effort, working for Unicef to deliver supplies to war-torn areas. The author travelled extensively in all the republics of the former Yugoslavia - both before and during the civil war. The Moon is Like a Golden Boat
by Juhani Püttsepp, Gundega Muzikante
White Raven 2021Every time Keete looks at pictures from her childhood where she’s holding her teddy bear Pätsu in her lap, she wonders what life would have been like without war. Her parents would certainly have been able to keep working as teachers without living in terror of the communists deporting them to Siberia. The whole family could have spent nights without having to hurry to the bomb shelter or see their precious hometown in ruins. In peacetime, she could have kept living on the second floor of their cherry-red home instead of setting off on a harrowing journey across the Baltic Sea to Sweden. Years and years later, Keete thinks about how lucky today’s kids are to grow up without war. And she still cradles Pätsu in her arms – a teddy bear who helped her get through life’s perils.

To noč sem jo videl/I Saw Her That Night
by Drago Jančar
Five people in the Balkans recall their lives before and during World War II and one unusual woman they all knew in this quietly impressive tale by the leading Slovenian writer. In I Saw Her That Night, the beautiful, headstrong Veronika appears first as a dreamy vision for a captured Serbian cavalryman who hasn’t seen her in seven years, since 1937. Their affair was sparked when her wealthy husband arranged for her riding lessons with the officer. She leaves her spouse and lives in poverty with the horseman on the Bulgarian border but returns to her husband and the new manor he has bought in Slovenia. Veronika’s mother and a live-in housekeeper from the manor each revisit their memories of her and wonder about the night she and her husband disappeared in the company of anti-German partisans. A military doctor who was among the German officers regularly visiting the manor and who once held Veronika’s hand receives a letter asking if he knows what happened to her. But it is Ivan, a workman at the manor, who supplies the key missing pieces as he aids the partisans after seeing Veronika and the doctor holding hands. Each recollection establishes a distinctive character and voice and another facet of the woman who touched them all. Each also provides a different view of the war.

by Henk Tromp

He quickly set out to set the record straight but was met with strong resistance from art dealers, collectors, critics, politicians, amongst others - all of whom had self-interested reasons to oppose his corrections. To this day, the international art world struggles to separate the real Van Goghs from the fake. A Real Van Gogh begins with the story of de la Faille and moves into the late decades of the twentieth century, outlining the numerous clashes over the authenticity of Van Gogh's works while simultaneously exposing the often bewildering ramifications for art critics and scholars when they bring unwelcome news.
