FILI, founded in 1977, is a centre for the export of literature. FILI promotes the export of literature from Finland by facilitating professional contacts and serving as a “home base” for translators of Finnish literature. We deal with fiction, children’s and young adult books, non-fiction, poetry, comics and graphic novels written in Finnish, Finland-Swedish and Sámi. FILI serves as a support organisation for the export of literature, while publishers and literary agencies handle the sale of translation rights. FILI is a department of the Finnish Literature Society, and around 80% of our funding comes from public sources.   FILI distributes approx. €700,000 in translation grants, travel grants and promotional grants for over 400 different projects annually organises Editors’ Week events for publishers to visit Finland from abroad participates in publishing trade fairs abroad acts as a focal point for translators of Finnish literature maintains a database of translations of Finnish literature published in other languages and collects data on translation rights sold abroad. You are welcome to contact us: if you want more information about our grants programmes (Grants Wizard) to let us know about a publisher abroad that’s interested in Finnish literature if you are a translator from Finnish/Finland-Swedish/Sámi and you’re not in our records yet to tell us about a new translation of a Finnish book that’s not in our database if you have questions about literary exports.   Networks FILI constitutes part of the NordLit network, along with similar organisations from the other Nordic countries. We hold regular meetings together where we plan our future operations and joint projects. We have a shared Nordic presence at some publishing trade events, such as the London Book Fair. In 2015 NordLit had a joint Nordic stand at the Beijing International Book Fair and the Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair. In Finland, FILI is a member of the TAIVE network of arts information centres. Unlike Finnish information centres for many other artistic genres, FILI does not have a mandate or specific duties to perform here in Finland; instead, our focus is on activities outside Finland. Thus we refer to ourselves in Finnish as a literary export organisation.

        Gemälde und Drama

        Giotto Masaccio Leonardo

        by Ivan Nagel

        Florenz

        Ein Reisebegleiter

        by Birgit Haustedt

        Renunciation and Freedom

        Survivial in the future

        by Jean-Pierre Wils

The situation in our society is precarious. The ecological shocks are omnipresent. The mere continuation of our lifestyles fixated on expansion and self-development has long since reached its limits. As if intoxicated by ourselves, we consume our world voraciously and without restraint. We need moderation and frugality that lead us out of the ecological and social dead ends and hold both the individual and Politics to account. We are by no means powerless and are perfectly capable of leading a life that offers prospects for a humane future. However, our idea of freedom needs urgent correction. For this endeavour to succeed, we need the courage to face reality and the willingness, in a spirit of solidarity, to say goodbye to a false life and join the alliance of renunciation and freedom. Then we will be free – differently and better.

Agri-food traditional, regional and typical products are an important resource for agricultural and rural development in many areas of the European Union. These Origin Labelled Products (OLPs) activate a complex system of relationships involving the local production and marketing and distribution systems, rural development dynamics and the consumer. Based on research conducted in European countries, this book provides an account of the current state of OLPs, enabling a better understanding of their characteristics and evolution in the agri-food system. It also assesses public policies at various levels and the effects of legal protection, financial support and public promotional initiatives on those involved, and consumers’ and citizens’ concerns and expectations.

        The year of the foreigner

        by Sebastiano Modadori

Milan, 1989. Filippo Degani, a senior year high school student, is an ordinary boy: middle-class family, the boring school routine, the girls, the iron friendship with the inseparable Claudio, the best friend with whom he shares the dates with the girls and the passion for football. In the background, high school soccer tournaments and the exploits of the legendary Milan soccer team of Arrigo Sacchi, Gullit and Van Basten. The equilibrium of this very Italian glimpse on the end of the Eighties is overwhelmed by the arrival, in Filippo’s school, of Robert Horowitz, immediately renamed ‘the Stranger’ – rich, beautiful but above all mysterious: nothing is known of his past nor of the reasons that prompted the family to move from London to the outskirts of Milan. Between memorable soccer matches and night raids, the friendship with the Stranger will turn Filippo’s life like a glove, a revolution that will force him to measure the difficulty of remaining true to himself.

        Il vino dei due mondi

        by Antonio Calò, Angelo Costacurta

Aveva ragione.

The Origins of Catholic Evolutionism, 1831-1950

        by Kenneth W. Kemp

The history of the Catholic Church’s response to evolutionary biology has often been badly misrepresented as antagonistic. In fact, its response is better characterized as a long process of accommodation. This work is a comprehensive introduction to the work of the Catholic scientists and theologians who worked out the details of that accommodation. Few Catholics found the evolutionary origin of plant and animal species theologically objectionable. None thought that evolutionary processes provided a sufficient account of the origin of the first human beings. Catholics differed over whether those processes played a role in the origin of the first human body. Catholic evolutionism began with the work of four nineteenth-century scientists who might be called the pioneers of Catholic evolutionism—Belgian geologist Jean-Baptiste d’Omalius d’Halloy, English anatomist George Mivart, Italian anatomist Filippo De Filippi, and French paleontologist Albert Gaudry. The next generations of Catholic evolutionists, writing in the period from about 1890 -1940, included scientists (Jesuit entomologists Erich Wasmann and Felix Rüschkamp) as well as priests who focused more exclusively on the question of compatibility (Dalmace Leroy, John Zahm, Henry de Dorlodot, and Ernest Messenger). Among the scientists might also be included French paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who made some contributions to the general idea of the compatibility of evolutionary biology and Catholic theology, but who eventually veered off in the direction of a comprehensive evolutionary theology of nature the details of which are beyond the scope of this book. Catholic anti-evolutionists made efforts to have the Church prohibit works of Catholic evolutionism that, in their judgment gave evolutionary processes too great a rôle in the formation of the human body or that relied on problematic principles of hermeneutics. Efforts on the former front were eventually blocked by Pope Pius XI. The first magisterial statement on the question came, however, only in 1950, with Pope Pius XII’s encyclical Humani generis, which provisionally declared the orthodoxy of evolutionary accounts of the origin of the human body. In addition to providing details about Catholic evolutionists and the magisterium, the book also reviews the treatment of the new ideas in Catholic encyclopedias, periodicals, and textbooks. Although written in the first instance as a work of scholarship, the book was also written with attention to the needs of scientists, priests, and members of the general public who are interested in the question.
