        Jacob Talmon

        Combining histories and presents

        by Amikam Nachmani

        Jacob Talmon: Combining histories and presents is not the biography of a historian. Rather, it is a discourse on a mind tormented by fear of the masses as well as the mistakes of the leadership. Talmon often applied his views on contemporary events and trends to his own actions as a humanist and historian. The changing role of the university, the decline of the liberal arts in favour of technology and the social sciences and the displacement of humanism by the market economy were of particular concern. His brilliant and paradoxically prophetic interactions with Arnold Toynbee, David Ben-Gurion, and Menahem Begin have been vindicated by the very history he sought to avoid. This new work in the English language makes Talmonic wisdom available for the first time to a much larger audience ;

        Cómo construir un volcán (How to create a volcano)

        by Vicente Rojo, José Emilio Pacheco, Alberto Blanco, Bárbara Jacobs, Coral Bracho, José-Miguel Ullán

        This work created from drawings of volcanoes by the artist, with the collaboration of the poems of Pacheco, Bracho, Blanco, Jacobs and Millán give us clues about how to build a volcano, ink and letters. Vicente Rojo's Volcanoes are descriptive forms, which contain a deep love for the artistic profession, and reveal an external structure that speaks of the infinite complexity of the universe. They are a creative effort to unravel the mystery of volcanoes. The use of descriptive and functional forms, characteristic of Vicente Rojo's work, allows establishing an interpretive parameter, which in poetry has been reflected in mysterious and evocative ways.

        Lektüre für Minuten

        Gedanken aus seinem Werk

        by George Bernard Shaw, Ursula Michels-Wenz

        "Die Auswahl »Lektüre für Minuten« vermittelt in konzentrierter Form sie die Gedankenwelt des Werks Bernard Shaws und beleuchtet dieses, ganz im Sinne des Autors, aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in Kapiteln über Tugend und Laster; über das Glück; Angst und Tod; Mann und Frau, Eltern und Kinder etc. Besonders dem mit Shaw noch nicht vertrauten Leser kann die thematische Aufteilung Zugang zur Vielschichtigkeit seiner Thesen und Verständnis des ebenso beliebten wie umstrittenen Moralisten, der politische und menschliche Kraftfelder mit Scharfsinn und Humor analysiert, wesentlich erleichtern."

        The debate on the English Revolution

        by R Richardson, Roger Richardson

        The debate on the English Revolution is firmly established as an essential guide to the literature in its field and appears here in a much revised third edition. Three new chapters are included on twentieth-century historians' treatments of social complexities, politics, political culture and revisionism, and on the Revolution's unstoppable reverberations. All the other chapters have been amended and recast to take account of recent publications. The book provides a searching re-examination of why the English Revolution remains such a provocatively controversial subject and analyses the different ways in which historians over the last three centuries have tried to explain its causes, course and consequences. Claredon, Hume, Macaulay, Gardiner, Tawney, Hill, and the present-day revisionists are given extended treatment, while discussion of the work of numerous other historians is integrated into a coherent, informative readable survey. ;

        »Seien Sie nicht zu undankbar, mir zu antworten«. Bernard Shaw – Lord Alfred Douglas. Briefwechsel

        by George Bernard Shaw, Lord Alfred Douglas, Mary Hyde, Ursula Michels-Wenz

        George Bernard Shaw wurde am 26. Juli 1856 als Sohn eines Beamten in Dublin geboren. 1876 zog er nach London, wo er sich als einer der führenden Musik- und Theaterkritiker etablieren konnte. Shaw betätigte sich auch auf politischer Bühne und wurde u.a. Mitglied der Fabian Society. Seine schriftstellerische Laufbahn begann er mit fünf erfolglosen Romanen, wandte sich dann dem Schreiben von Dramen – darunter vielen Komödien – zu, die sich durch die Verbindung von Ironie, Satire und Kritik an gesellschaftlichen und politischen Mißständen auszeichnen. Shaws Gesamtwerk umfaßt über 60 Dramen. 1925 wurde er mit dem Literaturnobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Er starb am 2. November 1950 in Ayot Saint Lawrence.

        Step-daughters of England

        British Women Modernists and the National Imaginary

        by Jane Garrity

        Jane Garrity shows how four British women modernists - Dorothy Richardson, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Mary Butts and Virginia Woolf - used experimental literary techniques in order to situate themselves as national subjects. Reading literary texts through the lens of material culture, this book makes a major contribution to the new modernist studies by arguing that women's imaginative work is inseparable from their ambivalent and complicated relation to Britain's imperial history. Drawing on extensive archival research, Garrity takes as her point of departure the ubiquitous maternal and racial link to national identification during the interwar period. Each chapter foregrounds a different range of cultural developments that coincided with the rise of modernism, such as emerging visual techniques, the revival of British neo-medievalism, ethnographic work on primitive mysticism, and nostalgia for English ruralism. By locating both canonical and non-canonical works of female literary modernism within broader cultural discourses, Garrity demonstrates the intersections among nationalism, imperialism, gender and sexuality in the construction of English national culture.

        Veterinary Practice Management

        by Catherine R Coates, Alan Jones, Michael W Coates

        Veterinarians are increasingly aware of the need to recognise they are working in a business enterprise. From operating as small practices twenty years ago, veterinary businesses are now run along sophisticated models and operate out of multi-million pound hospitals. Drawing together the latest information on practice management, this textbook provides practical and straightforward coverage of major elements, including client relationships and staff management, business and financial procedures, computer systems and project management. This book covers practice management topics as taught in veterinary schools worldwide, providing students with a textbook resource in this increasingly important subject. It is also a valuable source of information for newly qualified veterinarians, veterinarians interested in practice management and veterinary practice managers.
