        Mein Kochbuch

        Einfaches zu besonderen Anlässen

        by Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, Susanne Baumgarten

        The Boy Who Saw the Color of Air

        by Abdo Wazen

        In his first YA novel, cultural journalist and author Abdo Wazen writes about a blind teenager in Lebanon who finds strength and friendship among an unlikely group.   Growing up in a small Lebanese village, Bassim’s blindness limits his engagement with the materials taught in his schools. Despite his family’s love and support, his opportunities seem limited.   So at thirteen years old, Bassim leaves his village to join the Institute for the Blind in a Beirut suburb. There, he comes alive. He learns Braille and discovers talents he didn’t know he had. Bassim is empowered by his newfound abilities to read and write.   Thanks to his newly developed self-confidence, Bassim decides to take a risk and submit a short story to a competition sponsored by the Ministry of Education. After winning the competition, he is hired to work at the Institute for the Blind.   At the Institute, Bassim, a Sunni Muslim, forms a strong friendship with George, a Christian. Cooperation and collective support are central to the success of each student at the Institute, a principle that overcomes religious differences. In the book, the Institute comes to symbolize the positive changes that tolerance can bring to the country and society at large.   The Boy Who Saw the Color of Air is also a book about Lebanon and its treatment of people with disabilities. It offers insight into the vital role of strong family support in individual success, the internal functioning of institutions like the Institute, as well as the unique religious and cultural environment of Beirut.   Wazen’s lucid language and the linear structure he employs result in a coherent and easy-to-read narrative. The Boy Who Saw the Color of Air is an important contribution to a literature in which people with disabilities are underrepresented. In addition to offering a story of empowerment and friendship, this book also aims to educate readers about people with disabilities and shed light on the indispensable roles played by institutions like the Institute.

        Child, nation, race and empire

        Child rescue discourse, England, Canada and Australia, 1850–1915

        by Margot Hillel, Shurlee Swain, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie

        Child, nation, race and empire is an innovative, inter-disciplinary, cross cultural study that contributes to understandings of both contemporary child welfare practices and the complex dynamics of empire. It analyses the construction and transmission of nineteenth-century British child rescue ideology. Locating the origins of contemporary practice in the publications of the prominent English Child rescuers, Dr Barnardo, Thomas Bowman Stephenson, Benjamin Waugh, Edward de Montjoie Rudolf and their colonial disciples and literature written for children, it shows how the vulnerable body of the child at risk came to be reconstituted as central to the survival of nation, race and empire. Yet, as the shocking testimony before the many official enquiries into the past treatment of children in out-of-home 'care' held in Britain, Ireland, Australia and Canada make clear, there was no guarantee that the rescued child would be protected from further harm.

        Love's Sacrifice

        by A. T. Moore

        A. T. Moore's thorough commentary on "Love's Sacrifice" is designed to be of use to all kinds of readers, from students of Early Modern drama to specialists in the field. The notes provide full explanations of obscure words and phrases, and offer analyzes of many aspects of staging and interpretation. The text for this edition is based on a fresh study of the quarto of 1633, the only authoritative early text. In his introduction to the play, Moore reappraises the evidence for the play's date of composition. He also looks at the circumstances of the play's genesis, presenting detailed discussions of both the theater where "Love's Sacrifice" was first performed and the acting company for which it was written. Arguing that Ford's adaptation of his source materials is the key to interpreting this remarkably allusive play, Moore provides a wealth of new information about Ford's sources.The introduction also includes a survey of critical responses, an overview of the play, stage history, and a bibliography of relevant secondary material. This new volume in the "Revels Plays" series is the most detailed and comprehensive edition of "Love's Sacrifice" ever published - and the first modern-spelling edition of Ford's tragedy in more than a century. The play's textual history is discussed in an appendix. A second appendix examines possible links between "Love's Sacrifice" and the real-life story of the murdered Italian prince and musician Carlo Gesualdo. ;

        Hanif Kureishi

        by Bart Moore-Gilbert, John Thieme

        The first book-length study of one of Britain's most successful young writers. His work in a range of genres, from drama to film, fiction and short stories, has elicited widespread critical acclaim and - at times - provoked sharp condemnation. Provides a detailed account of his work to date, from Kureishi's early involvement in 'fringe' theatre (an area generally ignored hitherto), to the short story collections. Locates Kureishi's work securely in its historical, social, cultural and critical contexts, as well as providing detailed readings of all the major works. Kureishi is an important writer due to his intervention into such modish topics as British identity, questions of race, aspects of gender and choice of genre. ;

        Polnisches Mittelalter

        Ein literarisches Lesebuch von Antonina Jelicz

        by Josef Bujnoch, Christiane Reitz

        Die Entstehung des polnischen Staates im 10. Jahrhundert fällt mit dessen Christianisierung zusammen. Damit trat ein Land in die europäische Geschichte ein, das von den Zentren alter Mittelmeerkulturen weit entfernt war. Über die katholische Kirche hat die lateinische Universalkultur Europas jedoch auch bald in Polen Eingang und festen Boden gefunden. Im Zusammenwirken dieser kulturellen Werte mit lokalen Eigenheiten ist es zur Bildung einer originären Nation mit eigener Kultur gekommen.Die mittelalterliche, zunächst lateinisch- und später auch polnischsprachige Literatur Polens zeichnet ein plastisches Bild dieses Zeitalters, das den modernen Menschen faszinieren kann. Die ausgewählten Texte erzählen in Vers und Prosa viel über politische und soziale Mentalität, über die vielfältigen Formen der Frömmigkeit, über die Sitten und moralischen Werte der Zeit bis zum Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts. Es sind Auszüge aus Chroniken, religiöse, moralistische und erbauliche Literatur, Verhaltensanweisungen, Gelegenheits-, Liebes- und Vagantengedichte - all dies zahlreich mit zeitgenössischen Bildern illustriert.
