History matters
Patriarchy and the challenge of Feminism
by Judith Bennett
Written for everyone interested in women's and gender history, History matters reaffirms the importance to feminist theory and activism of long-term historical perspectives. Judith M. Bennett takes as her central problem the growing chasm between feminism and history which, although closely allied in the 1970s, have now moved away from one another. Seeking to narrow this gap, Bennett proposes that feminist historians turn their attention to the intellectual challenges posed by the persistence of patriarchy. She posits a 'patriarchal equilibrium' whereby, despite many changes in women's experiences over past centuries, women's status vis-à-vis men has remained remarkably unchanged. Bennett argues that the theoretical challenge posed by this 'patriarchal equilibrium' will be best met by long-term historical perspectives that reach back well before the modern era. A new manifesto, History matters engages forthrightly with the challenges faced by feminist historians today. It argues for the radical potential of a history that is focused on feminist issues, aware of the distant past, attentive to continuities over time, and alert to the workings of patriarchal power. ;

The silence of Barbara Synge
by Bill McCormack
'The silence of Barbara Synge' provides a fascinating companion volume to Bill McCormack's acclaimed 'Fool of the family' (2000), a biography of the playwright J.M. Synge (1871-1909). Taking the alledged death of Mrs John Hatch (née Synge) in 1767 as a focal point, this book explores the varied strands of the Synge family tree in eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland. Key events in the family's history are carefully documented, including a suicide in 1769 which is echoed in an early Synge play, the effects of the famine which influenced 'The playboy of the western world' in 1907, and the behaviour of Francis Synge at the time of the union. 'The silence of Barbara Synge' is a unique work of cultural enquiry, combining archival research, literary criticism, and religious and medical history to pull the strands together and relate them to the family's literary descendent J.M. Synge. ;

by Judith Schalansky

by Theodor Storm, Judith Schalansky, Judith Schalansky

Strange book
by Alexander Asatiani
All books have either writing, pictures or both in it, but the book that Ellen got as a gift has neither. It does, however, have extraordinary recording powers. Like in so many of Sandro’s stories, in The Strange Book it is completely natural for dreams to merge with reality. Through the matter-of-fact occurrence of unlikely events, The Strange Book tells a story of growing up without abandoning the inner child.

Blau steht dir nicht
Matrosenroman
by Judith Schalansky
