Mit dem 1886 erschienenen Roman »Cécile« setzt Fontane die Reihe seiner Zeitromane fort. Wie in »L’Adultera« und später in »Unwiederbringlich« oder »Effi Briest« steht eine scheiternde Ehe im Mittelpunkt; aber mehr noch stehen Frauenfragen im Brennpunkt des erzählten Geschehens: ihre fortwirkende Abhängigkeit in einer von Männern beherrschten Welt, die Geschichte machen, wie sie von ihnen verstanden wird. Zugleich ist die erzählte Geschichte der schönen Cécile von St. Arnaud eine Krankengeschichte, die mit dem Freitod endet. Der Zusammenhang von Frauenwelt, Krankheit und Gesellschaft, den Fontane als Erzähler sichtbar macht, rückt den lange Zeit verkannten Roman sehr nahe an die beginnende Moderne heran.

Sommer 1980. Die Geschichte »zwischen dem sehr jungen Yann Andréa Steiner und dieser Frau, die Bücher machte und die alt war und allein wie er« beginnt in Trouville. Behutsam skizziert Duras die aufkeimende Liebe, die den Tod von Anfang an in sich birgt. Parallel dazu erzählt sie von der unmöglichen Liebe zwischen dem kleinen Samuel Steiner und seiner Betreuerin Johanna Goldberg. Samuels Schwester wurde von den Nazis ermordet, seine Eltern deportiert. Yann Andréa wird zu Yann Andréa Steiner, und nicht allein der gemeinsame Name drückt die mythische Verwandtschaft zu Samuel, dem ebenfalls viel jüngeren Geliebten, aus. Duras' Erzählung von ihrer Liebe und der Angst darum schreitet mit dem Rhythmus der Wellen, des Windes und des Regens fort. Die Gespräche mit Yann führen zu einer weiteren Figur: Theodora Kats, eine in den Konzentrationslagern umgekommene junge Frau, deren Geschichte Duras nie hat aufschreiben können. Mir unbeschreiblicher Sogwirkung verknüpft die Duras Fiktion und Realität und macht aus »Yann Andréa Steiner« eine literarische Liebeserklärung an den langjährigen Gefährten.

Le visage de la paix, erschienen im Oktober 1951, ist das letzte einer stattlichen Anzahl von Büchern, die von 1936 an, während fünfzehn Jahren, aus der Zusammenarbeit von Paul Eluard (1895–1952) und Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) entstanden sind.Am 5. Dezember, aus Anlaß des dreißigjährigen Bestehens der Kommunistischen Partei Frankreichs, zeichnete Picasso eine Folge von 29 allegorischen Variationen zum Thema Taube und Frauengesicht. In der Abfolge der Zeichnungen entwickelte Picasso nach Art einer Bildergeschichte die schrittweise Annäherung der Taube an das Frauengesicht. Das Frauengesicht erscheint zuerst nur als Umriß, wird nach und nach belebt, während die Taube sich mehr und mehr herandrängt, das Gesicht mehr und mehr umfängt, bis sie schließlich eine Einheit mit ihm bildet: Die Taube hat sich das Frauengesicht einverleibt.Gestalt- und Antlitz-Metamorphosen sind in dem Werk von Picasso nichts Ungewöhnliches. Das Motiv der Verbindung von Taube und Frauengesicht hingegen erscheint hier zum erstenmal. (Aus dem Nachwort)
