Die beiden einflußreichsten Ökonomen der letzten 150 Jahre waren Häretiker der ökonomischen Wissenschaft – sie wußten dies und haben beide doch unübersehbar als Pioniere der politischen Ökonomie Geltung beansprucht. Beiden war klar, daß ihre jeweilige Mission nicht auf den Bereich der Wissenschaft beschränkt bleiben durfte, wenn sie erfolgreich sein sollte. Marx᾿ Diktum, man könne die Philosophie nicht verwirklichen, ohne sie aufzuheben, hat ihr Pendant in Keynes᾿ Vorstellung, daß seine Theorie mit »Politik, Gefühlen und Passionen gemischt« werden müsse, um geeignete Wirkungen hervorzubringen. Kritik an der herrschenden Wissenschaft aber gilt beiden dafür als Voraussetzung. Durch Gegenüberstellung und Konzentration werden in den hier veröffentlichten Essays die ökonomischen Theorien von Karl Marx und John Maynard Keynes aufgeschlossen und beleuchtet. Harald Scherf legt dar, daß der von beiden jeweils schon in frühen Jahren entworfene Ökonomiebegriff für die Theorien des reifen Werks, deren konkrete Anwendungen und die von ihnen ausgehenden politischen Entwicklungen bestimmend gewesen ist. Auch die Zukunftsperspektiven von Marx und Keynes erweisen sich von ihrem Ökonomiebegriff beeinflußt. Die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit beiden Autoren geschieht – sympathisierend – im Lichte unserer Erfahrung.

George Bernard Shaw wurde am 26. Juli 1856 als Sohn eines Beamten in Dublin geboren. 1876 zog er nach London, wo er sich als einer der führenden Musik- und Theaterkritiker etablieren konnte. Shaw betätigte sich auch auf politischer Bühne und wurde u.a. Mitglied der Fabian Society. Seine schriftstellerische Laufbahn begann er mit fünf erfolglosen Romanen, wandte sich dann dem Schreiben von Dramen – darunter vielen Komödien – zu, die sich durch die Verbindung von Ironie, Satire und Kritik an gesellschaftlichen und politischen Mißständen auszeichnen. Shaws Gesamtwerk umfaßt über 60 Dramen. 1925 wurde er mit dem Literaturnobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Er starb am 2. November 1950 in Ayot Saint Lawrence. Harald Mueller, geb. am 18. Mai 1934 in Memel, war u. a. Theaterautor und Dramaturg. Für den Suhrkamp Verlag übersetzte er Werke von Bernard Shaw ins Deutsche. Er starb am 27. Dezember 2021.

Edward Bond wurde 1934 in der Londoner Vorstadt Holloway geboren. 1956 schrieb er erste Gedichte und Stückentwürfe und trat 1960 einer Dramatikergruppe um John Osborne, Arnold Wesker und John Arden bei. 1962 wurde Bonds erstes Stück, The Pope's Wedding (Die Hochzeit des Papstes), in London uraufgeführt. Sein zweites Theaterstück, Saved (Gerettet), provozierte einen der größten Skandale der britischen Theatergeschichte: Das Stück wurde kurz nach seiner Premiere im November 1965 im Royal Court Theatre aufgrund von expliziter Gewaltdarstellung von der Zensur verboten. Die sich anschließende Diskussion um Freiheit der Kunst bewirkte 1968 das Ende der britischen Theaterzensur. Große Erfolge wurden Anfang der 1970er Jahre seine Lear-Bearbeitung und das Stück The Sea (Die See). In den kommenden Jahrzehnten zahlreiche Stücke, Opernlibretti für Hans Werner Henze, Arbeit an Theatern, für den Film (u.a. Mitarbeit am Drehbuch zu Antonionis Film Blow up) und das Fernsehen. Edward Bond lebt in der Nähe von Cambridge. Harald Mueller, geb. am 18. Mai 1934 in Memel, war u. a. Theaterautor und Dramaturg. Für den Suhrkamp Verlag übersetzte er Werke von Bernard Shaw ins Deutsche. Er starb am 27. Dezember 2021.
